Remarks

Jogamaya Devi college is the morning session of Asutosh College under Calcutta University. It is located at Hazra. You can easily visit our college by metro (Jatin Das Park metro, gate no 1). Metrophobiac people can try the bus as well (Hazra Stoppage). Its timing is generally from 6.15 am to 11 am (summer) and in winter 7 am to 11.30 am. So, after attending classes in the morning you will have enough time to study or doing your preferable work. The library has all the books availability. Canteen is on the top floor, So students mainly prefer to eat outside rather than a canteen. Faculties were nice and knowledgeable. Laboratories are also good. Lab attendants were well trained. All the colleges under Calcutta University follow the same syllabus. It is not an autonomous college. Practical classes are more regular than theory classes. Students mainly depend on coachings for theory classes. Official staffs are a little bit irritated but their service depends on your behaviour too.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

I decided to go to chemistry after 12 as it is my favourite subject. Faculty: Student ratio is 1: 10. All the faculties are women. All the faculties have a PhD degree and many of them also have a post-doctorate degree. At our department faculties mainly focus on the base building. Practical classes are more regular than theory class. Students depend on coaching mainly. But if greater no of students presents in the class then faculty never denies taking classes. JDC is under Calcutta University (NIRF ranking 5). Studing Chemistry under CU is really tough. You have to maintain regularity. Many students don't qualify honours at a single attempt. 40% marks ie mandatory to qualify honours. But I can give you the assurance that after passing from CU with Chemistry, you will have enough knowledge about chemistry.

Internships Opportunities

0.5

During my time I was not introduced any kind of internship by my department. But you can try for internships by personal mail. You can also apply the INSA- NASI- IASc summer research fellowship programme for an internship. You have to write about your research interest in applying.

Placement Experience

0.5

Our Jogamaya Devi College offers very fewer placements. My batch didn't get any placement. After B.Sc with Chemistry you can go for M.Sc then PhD (academic). You will also get a job in ONGC, IOCL as a chemist after clearing the gate.

Fees and Financial Aid

Course fees are not so high. Scholarships are available for the topper and economically weaker sections. College campusing for jobs of Chemistry department is very poor. After B.Sc in Chemistry, you will not get good jobs without clearing the CSIR-NET/GATE.

Campus Life

3

Classrooms are nice like the gallery system. It can take a maximum of 100 students. But the no of seats for Chemistry (H) is near about 60. You can participate in sports. Our college is politically active. For extracurricular activities there is a team available, you can join that.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

There is no hostel facility available. Students take personal PG in rent. You can get good non AC PG at Rs 3000/month. You can also go for high range. You can also avail flats in nearby areas (kali ghat, Hazra, Rabindra Sarobar, Rashbihari, Tollygunj). Metro, as well as bus connectivity, are available. You will get Bengali food mainly (fish meal). If you are vegetarian then you can also take foods from dabbawala. Some PGs also have fooding and lodging system.

Interview Experience

5

Admission is completely on merit basis. There is no admission test. There is no interview round as well. If you have good marks in class 12 you will get admission. For Chemistry honours marks of Chemistry, Physics and Maths will be counted.

Other Applied Colleges

Yes | B.Sc (H)

This is a girls college in morning session. After attending the morning classes I would have the whole day for my own works.

Placement Experience:

People who major in my department usually opt for masters over placement not because of this college but because overall industrial or academic opportunities are better with a pg degree. Masters from this college is not recommended as i have heard so from my seniors. Some of my seniors managed to crack competitives and secure MSc seats at great places. Training and Placement cell had a good coordinator previously but now its almost non existent. Companies do come and hire Bpharm, Mpharm and MSc candidates. Packages are below average. Only Nestle pays well. But if you do well you'll eventually climb up the corportate ladder. From the time i am here i have not heard of any BSc candidate getting placed. Most go for higher studies.

Placement Experience:

The average package offered for such roles ranges between ?2–3 LPA, while the highest package offered to a BSc student is around ?4 LPA, depending on skills and specialization. Overall, around 15–20% of BSc students get placed through campus drives, and many students rely on off-campus opportunities.

The course is very relevant as it provides us an overall knowledge of biology and not dividing it into various sections rather giving us an insight of every aspect of biology. It includes everything such as microbiology, zoology, botany, physiology, molecular biology and so on.

Completely relevant. As the college is autonomous it has its own syllabus. Which matches with the net gate jam exam syllabus. When someone came our college for seminar they strange that we know this much. Exam are quite difficult in 2 months interval.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum was well thought out as per me but there were subjects that i found absolutely unnecessary. Subjects like history evs and clc were in no way related to my course. Coming to the main subjects Design, Printing, Photography and film and Media Training were absolutely necessary for my course and whilst the faculty for some of these subjects were really bad, some were good. It is also important to mention none of these subjects actually helped us prepare for the real world. Instead internships and freelance helped us more than these subjects could ever do. Exams were held bi monthly to keep track of what we learnt and every 6 months we had our semester exams. Overall if you want to be a media professional INTERNSHIPS AND JOBS WILL HELP YOU MORE THAN A COLLEGE WILL. I am biased on this opinion as my college didnt provide me with the correct guidance and support i needed to make it in the real world.

In case of computer science department, placement is provided at the Last year of M.sc course. Many companies like Wipro, b10x, Tata visited here. Highest package ever is three lakh per annum. 20-40% of the students got placement after completing M.Sc computer science. My plan after B.sc is to pursue MCA.

* It's all about practical knowledge, we are getting from this course and another aspect is if you wants to make your career in research or lecturer then you should go for it. *No changes required in teaching methods but if college will provide hostel facilities and campus requirement drive, then it will better for candidates.
