Condition of Law Colleges

The course is very broad with essential subjects like sociology, economics, and political science which is very important for the subject of law. Without these subjects, one cannot fully comprehend law. Also, there is a vast corpus of laws for students to imbibe. Students learn a lot from the curriculum along with great approachable faculty. This intensive pressure prepares students for real-life experience in the courtroom. However, I am of the considered opinion that with intensive theoretical training, one needs practical experience through internship and practice which is absent in the course. Only one paper is given on practical experience which is abysmal. Along with law, there should also be a focus on mental health and athletics which will lead to the overall growth of students. Examinations are very irregular and are usually to be held after 6 months. The papers are very lengthy and subjects are very comprehensive.

Fees are charged per semester and one needs to pay 12500 rupees per semester, which is complete tuition fee. During admission, one needs to pay additional fees which are nearly 20k along with 12,500. On failure of payment of fees, 30 rupees fine is charged for each days. There is no other form of reservation or reduction of fees on the basis of reservation. There are no scholarships given by the college. For LL.B.(HONS), the fees per semester is 12,500 Rupees per semester, and for Master of Social Work, the fees per semester is 15,000 rupees per semester.

The overall experience of campus is very very abysmally poor. Don't get me started on that. There is no campus to begin with. The atmosphere is very poor and toxic. Although there is no ragging and the college authority follows a strict no-ragging policy, students are very toxic. Annually there are socials, to which famous singers are invited and sometimes flash mobs are done. There are no other fests or competitions held. Intra-college moot court and essay writing competitions were held recently. These kinds of academic fests are very rare in our college. Sports is never even a thought in the mind of management, there is no playground or gym. There are also no student-run social groups, clubs, or student portals in our college and the authority doesn't even take steps to establish the same.

I did not apply to other colleges as it is in close proximity. There is only one law college in the district of Purba Bardhaman where I am from. The other law colleges are very far away from my house which would take me 4-5 hours to travel if there is no traffic. Since I didn't apply to other colleges I didn't get any rejection. If considered with other colleges, the studies are more intensive in law colleges under Calcutta University, as the syllabus is more intensive and has more subjects like Land Law which is absent in the curriculum of B.A. LL.B. of Burdwan University. Fees are also very less in government colleges. The fees for one semester in our college are equal to the fees of the entire course fee in a government college. The infrastructure is much better in government colleges with regular moot court competitions and other competitions, clubs, and extracurricular activities. Admission is on basis of merit score computed on marks of class 10 and 12.

The faculty-to-student ratio is very poor, teachers come and go, especially good teachers(in my opinion). Teachers have cordial relations with students and they are very approachable to students. Teachers make students very comfortable and try to clear the doubts of students in their capacity. There are few faculty members who are to my liking and I understand what they teach. Their teaching is very clear and engaging. Whereas some teachers are very mundane and boring. They just come and read textbooks and give notes and leave. Semester exams are very hard not because the subject is hard but it is because the subjects are very lengthy. The course curriculum is very relevant to the modern world although there is an absance of important subjects like land law.
