University of Calcutta Admission Process

University of Calcutta follows distinct admission tracks for UG, PG, and professional programmes. The university does not accept CUET scores for any programme. All admissions are managed through open merit with no management quota.

BA / B.Sc / B.Com (UG Humanities, Commerce, and Science)

Admission to BA, B.Sc Honours, and B.Com is purely merit-based on Class 12 aggregate marks. Eligible students apply through the West Bengal Common Admission Portal.

  • Eligibility: Class 12 pass from any recognised board
  • Minimum marks: 45% aggregate for BA and 50% for B.Sc and B.Com (45% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD)
  • Selection: Merit rank in WBCAP by subject preference and seat availability
  • No entrance exam, no interview, and no management quota

Class 12 cutoffs for the General Category typically fall in the 75% to 85% range for popular subjects such as Economics, English, and Political Science. Competitive subjects such as Physics Honours and Computer Science Honours regularly require 85% or above in relevant papers.

B.Tech

B.Tech admission is determined by WBJEE or JEE Main scores, processed through centralised WBJEE counselling conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board.

  • Eligibility: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with 45% aggregate (40% for SC/ST)
  • Entrance: WBJEE rank or JEE Main NTA percentile
  • Process: Online counselling, choice filling, seat allotment, document verification, and admission confirmation

MBA (HRD)

The MBA (HRD) programme at the Department of Business Management accepts CAT, MAT, and JEMAT scores for shortlisting.

  • Eligibility: Graduation in any discipline with minimum 50% aggregate
  • Entrance: Valid CAT, MAT, or JEMAT score from the current or previous cycle
  • Process: Score-based shortlisting, Group Discussion, Personal Interview, and final merit list

The CAT cutoff for the MBA (HRD) programme typically falls around 70 to 75 percentile for the General Category. JEMAT is a West Bengal state-level management entrance test and serves as an accessible alternative for students who did not appear for CAT.

PG Programmes (MA / M.Sc / M.Com / MCA / M.Tech)

PG admissions follow a dual-track approach based on the student’s undergraduate institution.

  • 80% of PG seats are reserved for graduates of CU-affiliated colleges, admitted on merit based on graduation marks
  • 20% of PG seats are open to graduates of other universities, who must clear a departmental entrance examination
  • MCA requires a WBJEE JECA score. M.Tech requires a valid GATE score

Ph.D Programmes

PhD admission requires a Master’s degree with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD) and a valid qualifying exam score. All PhD candidates must hold NET JRF, NET LS, GATE, SET, or SLET qualification. Admission is finalised through a research proposal presentation and departmental interview.

University of Calcutta: 31 Answered Questions

Which among these is the better university for BBA - Jadavpur University, Calcutta University or Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

If you are considering joining JU then go for either JD Birla or Institute of Business Management. Their BHA program is one of the best in the country. However, JU has a bit of political influence so that might affect your learning experience. That being said, MAKAUT BBA seems to be the best option for you. Their curriculum and job opportunities are top notch and the institute does not have any kind of political affiliations.

I will not suggest you join CU unless you are getting Goenka or Scottish. From what I have heard, the university has a very tough grading system. This might affect your job opportunities so consider this once before joining.

Here is a comparative analysis of the placement scenario of these institutes

Which university is better for BBA Calcutta University or Amity University Kolkata?

Supriya Sarkar
Arnav RoyLives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Even though Calcutta University is one of the oldest and most-renowned Indian universities, it has a very strict marking system.

Though Amity University is new and does not have the history that Calcutta University does, if you work hard you can score good marks in your BBA and get admission to a prestigious university for your MBA.

Amity’s environment can be a bit distracting at times, however, it is upon the students to maintain a good academic score.

In terms of placements, Calcutta University’s brand will hold importance and even the recruiters are aware that 55-60% is the score of the top students at Calcutta University. On the other hand, Calcutta University’s marking scheme can also cause problems during placements because regardless of the reputation of an institution, if the students do not score more than 50%, some companies will simply not allow them to sit for the placements.

Other factors that can guide your decision are - Ease of travel/Distance from home, Fee vs Potential, and the reason for pursuing the particular course, among others.

Amity is on the costlier side, but the faculties at both are equally good.

Both the institutes are a good choice, however, Amity University is more beneficial considering all the factors.

How is CSE or IT in Calcutta University, compared to the same branches at Heritage Institute of Technology?

Tiyasha GhoshStudied at the University of Calcutta (2018)

If you're considering pursuing a degree in engineering or science, it's important to understand the differences between various institutions and the programs they offer. Here's what you need to know about HITK, CU, and The Heritage College:

  • HITK: This institution offers a four-year B.Tech. degree program that is affiliated with MAKAUT (formerly known as WBUT). The curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in engineering concepts and prepare them for careers in various industries.
  • CU: CU, on the other hand, offers a three-year B.Sc. degree program. While it's not directly comparable to HITK's B.Tech. program, it's still worth noting that the two programs have different structures and focus on different areas of study.
  • The Heritage College: This institution offers a B.Sc. degree program that is affiliated with CU. The program is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in science and prepare them for careers in various fields.

It's important to note that comparing these institutions and programs directly is not necessarily productive, as each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. However, if you're trying to decide which program is right for you, here are some factors to consider:

  • Curriculum: Take a close look at the curriculum for each program and consider whether it aligns with your interests and career goals.
  • Affiliation: Consider whether the program is affiliated with a reputable university or institution.
  • Duration: Consider the length of each program and whether it fits with your timeline and schedule.
  • Focus: Consider the focus of each program and whether it aligns with your interests and career goals.

In conclusion, when comparing HITK, CU, and The Heritage College, it's important to consider the unique strengths and weaknesses of each program and institution, rather than trying to make direct comparisons. This will help you make an informed decision about which program is right for you.

Choosing between Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) and Calcutta University (CU), is not justified, as they are both reputed institutions and have more or less the same performance.

Their curriculum will be different, along with their teaching style. But both will provide you with similar opportunities after graduation.

CU students claim that it is very difficult to score good marks here, but since the semester system started in CU, it has become manageable.

So choose the college you feel suits all your requirements, then go for the one. The one thing better in CU is the environment, because RBU has been in constant disputes and political turmoil, which sometimes hampers regular classwork.

Is the scoring system of Rabindra Bharati University as hard as Calcutta University?

Abhijeet Singh
Deboleena SenguptaM.Phil English Literature & American and English Literature, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (2008)

Comparing universities is not a very good idea. Calcutta University (CU) and Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) are reputed institutions.

  • The faculties here are well experienced but not punctual, they often leave most of the topics for the students to figure it out themselves.
  • The administration of these institutions are slow and most of the time do not cater to the students' demands.
  • Students who genuinely wanted to learn something will be disappointed, as seeking knowledge is not encouraged.
  • Students are said to mug up theories than to actually understand the concepts.
  • Booth colleges are infamous for their scoring system. Students claim their answer sheets are not checked properly.

So, if you are willing to study in any one of the institutions, you should remember that your effort and dedication will finally matter and not the name of the college.
