Course Curriculum Overview

4

The Curriculum is Competency Based Medical Education (CBME). Pros: 1. Focusses more on practical aspects of medicine. Provides training on procedural skills such as Ryle's tube insertion, catheterization etc. Such kind of training helps us a lot in developing professional skills. 2. Newer additions to the curriculum such as Self-Directed Learning (SDL), Small Group Discussions (SGD) etc..promote discussions of most relevant clinical topics in detail. Seminars are also conducted. Such activities provide a number of benefits to the students such as overcoming stage fear, enhancing communication skills through seminars which is a very important aspect in a doctor's profession,

Internships Opportunities

4

An Internship period of 12 months is mandatory after completion of MBBS course in order to get Permanent registration as a Doctor. After we pass Final Year MBBS exams, we need to acquire a temporary registration certificate for the purpose of practising Internship, the validity of which will only be 13 months from the date of issue of the certificate. Since patient load is less, clinical exposure as an intern will be less. Stipend is Rs. 7000 per month. Seminars should be taken by each intern in every department, failure of which will lead to non-issue of Completion certificate.

Fees and Financial Aid

Year-wise fees (Merit Seat): Tuition fees: Rs. 6,16,000 Hostel fees: Rs. 75,000 Mess fees: Rs. 55,000 Special fees (including lab, transport, library fees, caution deposit etc): Rs. 29,000 Year-wise fees (NRI Seat) Tuition fees: Rs. 20,00,000 Tuition, special and hostel fees same as that of merit seats OEC: Only mess fees need to be paid. All India Merit seats (15% of total number of seats): Fees same as that of Merit seat Total fees for 5 years should be paid. Merit cum means scholarship can be availed subject to certain criteria.

Campus Life

4

Year wise celebrations of common festivals like Onam and Christmas are conducted. Sports activities are entertained and students get opportunities to undergo training with respective coaches for Football, Volleyball, Basketball, cricket, Kho-kho etc. Interbatch, intra-batch sports, arts and cultural festivals are being organized almost every year. Students from the college also participated in inter-college competitions like KUHS Zonals, Inter-zonals etc. Hostel wise celebrations and programs are organized every year. A well maintained and organized library facility is available in the college with a wide collection of books and journals covering all subjects of Medicine. Spacious reading areas are also present which enable students to prepare well for their exams. Class rooms and seminar halls are mostly air conditioned with projector, blackboard and white board facilities. Spacious classrooms with adequate seating capacity.

Hostel Facilities

5

Hostel facilities are affordable and worth the money. Each hostel room provides accommodation for 3 people with separate study tables, chairs and cupboards/ almarahs for each person. Common washrooms in each floor. Newly constructed 6 toilets and 6 bathrooms separately with modern interiors. Rooms are spacious, well lighted and well ventilated. Corridors are spacious, provide areas for practice for sports and cultural programs. Mess food is from a separate entity called Vista hospitality service. It serves good quality, hygienic food with homely taste. Menu keeps changing every week. Usually 3 non-veg meals every week. Auspicious food on special occasions. A vending machine has been set up in the ground floor so that students need not go outside everytime for having snacks. Hostel fees and Mess fees per year are Rs. 75000 and Rs. 55000 respectively. Rooms can be rented out in Meeyannoor locality based on availability.

Admission

It was my first attempt at NEET-UG Entrance examination and had applied for Sree Gokulam Medical College, SMCI Medical College, Karakonam, Amala Medical College, Pushpagiri Medical College, Jubilee Medical College, KMCT Malabar Medical College, Malabar Medical College, Al Azhar Medical College and Azeezia Medical College. I was allotted Al Azhar Medical College, but I didn't want to select a college that far. So I opted Azeezia which is comparatively nearer to my home. NEET UG Examination is the qualifying exam. A score of 600+ (which may vary based on the difficulty level of exam) may be needed for a Government seat. A rank within 1000 is required for being admitted in a Government institution. A rank upto around 10000 can fetch you a merit seat in a private medical college. Even lower ranks are okay for admission to NRI seats provided you have an NRI status. Other All-India level exams for MBBS: AIIMS for several institutions of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, JIPMER for admission to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research.

Faculty

5

Approximately 10 faculties in each department. All teaching members are highly knowledgeable, well experienced, out of which many are retired Professors from Government Medical Colleges. Most of the faculties maintain a good rapport with the students, making it easy for students to approach them anytime. A minimum of 3 internal exams and 1 model exams are conducted for every batch. Both theory and practical exams are held. In addition, short periodic assessments are also conducted which enable the students to keep revising their topics and improve their academics in total. Exams are of a moderate difficulty level, question papers are set based on the new Competency Based Medical Education Curriculum. This new curriculum is very relevant in the current clinical scenario as it focuses more on the practical aspects of medicine rather than just mere theory. The new CBME curriculum also focuses on AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics and Communication), which trains us to be more empathetic, disciplined doctors with ethical values. Around 10 percent of students fail to clear the exams on an average. Most of the students pass with first class and many manage to score distinction. There are alumnis from Azeezia Medical College who have cracked the Postgraduate entrance exams in the very first or second attempt and got admitted to Government Medical Institutions.

Night Life

4

During UG period, students are supposed to get back to hostels by 6.30 pm. House surgeons have no curfew in particular due to round the clock duty hours. Canteen facility provided inside the hospital. A new dine-in space named Dietary Kitchen has been opened in the hospital basement floor which serves hygienic food and also delivers it to patient side. Nearest restaurants and cafes in Meeyannoor are Quilon cafe, Indian hotel, Shawab, Kaaf, Mannappam and Marhaba. Then there are various food and hangout spots in Kottiyam such as Chicking , Cake Corner, Dreams Mall, Rameez restaurant etc. Kollam also offers a wide variety of options like Supreme Experienza and Upper Crust, Asado, Holborne, Qahwa, Javees, KFC, RP Mall, Meen by Chef Pillai etc. Locality not very safe to roam around at night. Gyms are available nearby (Meeyannoor, Chathannoor)
