Cardiff offers more than 300 postgraduate taught programmes and around 300 undergraduate degrees across three colleges spanning Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Biomedical and Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences and Engineering. All degrees are taught in English, with September as the primary intake for Indian applicants and a smaller January intake open on selected postgraduate courses. Indian students at Cardiff cluster in Data Science, Cybersecurity, Advanced Computer Science, the MBA and the MBA in UK pathway.

Indian graduates qualify for the two-year UK Graduate Route visa after completion, and Cardiff is a designated Student Route sponsor which simplifies CAS issuance.

The next full cycle, for September 2027 entry, is expected to open October 2026 on a rolling basis with no fixed close date, though Cardiff recommends submitting by 29 January 2027 for competitive courses.

Cardiff University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Cardiff sets its Indian entry bar at the Class 12 board score for undergraduate and the bachelor’s percentage or CGPA for postgraduate; the section below covers the headline thresholds Indian applicants must clear.

Cardiff University PG Requirements for Indian Students

  • Bachelor’s degree: Three or four-year degree from a UGC-recognised institution with 55% to 65% or CGPA 6.0 to 7.0/10 (Cardiff maps this to UK 2:2 or 2:1; the higher band is required for Finance, Data Science and MBA)
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each component (Cardiff’s minimum). TOEFL iBT and Oxford ELLT are accepted for select programmes; verify current minimums and scale reporting on Cardiff’s English language requirements page
  • Credential verification: WES or ECCTIS evaluation is not mandatory but often requested for non-UGC-recognised institutions
  • MBA-specific: Three years of full-time post-qualification work experience plus two references (one academic, one professional)

Cardiff University UG Requirements for Indian Students

  • Class 12 academic: CBSE, ICSE or state board with 78% to 85% in the best four academic subjects (Medicine and Dentistry require 85%+ in PCB)
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each component, or CBSE/ICSE English at 70%+ where the Class 12 medium of instruction was English

Key insight: Cardiff waives the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants whose most recent qualification was taught and examined in English, provided a formal medium-of-instruction letter is submitted with the application. This waiver is decision-dependent and never guaranteed, so Indian applicants should book an IELTS slot as a backup even when a waiver looks likely.

Cardiff University Acceptance Rate 2027

Cardiff University does not publish an institution-wide acceptance rate. Third-party trackers, based on UCAS and international admissions data, place the aggregate rate at 20% (estimated), though this varies sharply by school. Programme-level selectivity is a more useful metric than the headline number.

Programme ClusterAcceptance RateNotes for Indian Applicants
Medicine and Dentistry (UG)8% to 12% (estimated)Limited international seats; UCAT and interview required
Computer Science and Data (PG)25% to 35% (estimated)Backlogs and academic gap tolerated with strong 2:1
Business School (PG)35% to 45% (estimated)MBA requires work-experience review by faculty
Humanities and Social Sciences (PG)50%+ (estimated)Higher yield for on-time complete applications

[Source: aggregated UCAS end-of-cycle data and Cardiff school-level admissions reports]

The 20% headline masks a wide range: clinical and Russell Group STEM programmes reject four in five, while several social science masters admit more than half of applicants. Indian applicants with a 2:1 equivalent bachelor’s and strong LORs sit comfortably in the top half of the pool for most taught masters.

Reality check: Cardiff’s admit rate for Indian applicants to PG taught programmes runs meaningfully higher than the aggregate figure because Cardiff actively recruits from India. Indian applicants with a 60%+ bachelor’s, a clean IELTS 6.5 and a specific-course fit typically clear review inside four weeks.

Insider note: Cardiff’s private-rent market is dominated by shared student houses in Cathays and Roath, where Indian students routinely secure a bedroom for £480 to £600 per month all-bills-included. The three-week Christmas break lets many students sublet or return home to India, further compressing accommodation spend.

Cardiff University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Cardiff University operates from two adjacent city-centre campuses in the Welsh capital: Cathays Park for arts, humanities, business and physical sciences, and Heath Park for medicine, dentistry and healthcare.

  • Location and transport: Both campuses are a 15-minute walk from Cardiff Central station; London Paddington reaches Cardiff in 2 hours by direct rail
  • Housing: Cardiff guarantees a residence room to every international first-year applicant who applies by 31 July; on-campus rents run £150 to £220 per week
  • Facilities: Wales’ largest academic library sits at the Arts and Social Studies Library, and the recently opened Centre for Student Life houses wellbeing and careers services under one roof
  • Indian community: The Cardiff University Indian Society hosts a 400-strong active membership and runs Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events on campus
  • Safety: Cardiff ranks among the safest UK Russell Group cities, with 24/7 campus security and free late-night student walkers to residences

What Indian students say: The compact walkable city means most students never need a car; the Indian grocery cluster on City Road covers everything from atta to fresh paneer within a mile of both campuses. Rents remain the single biggest advantage over Manchester and Bristol.

GREAT is separate and competitive; Indian applicants who submit their Cardiff application by January improve their odds of GREAT nomination as the university nominates only 3 to 5 candidates per year.

Cardiff University Rankings 2027

Cardiff’s strongest ranking is QS World University Rankings 2027, where it holds joint #179, up two places from #181 in 2026 and continuing a two-year recovery from #186 in 2025. Its subject-level standing is stronger, with QS placing Communication and Media Studies inside the global Top 50.

Cardiff also holds QS subject Top 50 for Dentistry, Top 100 for Architecture, English Literature, Geography, Nursing, Sociology and Marketing, and THE’s Impact Ranking places its Climate Action performance at global #29. Collegedunia Study Abroad ranks Cardiff #91 in Law and #91 in Social Studies globally.

Key insight: Cardiff sits inside the QS Top 200 threshold that most Indian public-sector employers, foreign PhD panels and MOFA-nominated scholarship boards use as the recognition floor. This matters more than the exact rank position when applying to Indian government roles or scholarships on return.

Cardiff University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Cardiff University reports strong graduate outcomes across all colleges, with the UK Graduate Outcomes Survey placing 90%+ of its graduates in work or further study within 15 months of completion.

  • Employment within 15 months: 91.5% of Cardiff graduates (2024 Graduate Outcomes Survey)
  • Median PG starting salary: £29,000 to £34,000 (₹37.70 lakh to ₹44.20 lakh) as 2026 UK market median for Cardiff PG graduates
  • Post-MBA median salary: £42,000 to £48,000 (₹54.60 lakh to ₹62.40 lakh) for Cardiff Business School MBA graduates
  • Representative recruiters: Big Four consultancies (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC), Airbus, GE Aviation, Legal and General, Admiral Group, NHS Wales, BBC Cymru Wales and Welsh Government
  • Careers support: The Careers and Employability service runs Cardiff Award, an accredited work-experience programme, and hosts 200+ employer visits per academic year
  • Post-study visa: Indian graduates qualify for the two-year UK Graduate Route visa, extending to three years for PhD graduates

Insider note: Cardiff’s strongest UK hiring pipelines for Indian graduates sit in professional services and financial services (Admiral Group’s Cardiff HQ hires heavily from the Business School) and in engineering (Airbus and GE Aviation’s Nantgarw plant recruit BEng and MSc Advanced Computer Science graduates each cycle).

Cardiff University vs Peer Universities

The peer set below compares Cardiff with three other Russell Group universities in similar rank bands, using QS World 2027 as the anchor and Cardiff’s 2026/27 PG fee schedule for cost comparison.

[Source: QS World University Rankings 2027 and university international fee schedules]

Cardiff stands out on two data points that matter to Indian applicants: it holds a QS Top 200 rank without the London-cost premium, and its Cathays Park campus sits in a genuinely walkable city where student rents run 30%+ lower than Queen Mary’s East London catchment. For applicants targeting Russell Group brand plus a manageable total-cost envelope, Cardiff clears the bar.

Cardiff University fits an Indian applicant who wants a Russell Group degree at a mid-tier total cost, with a clear route to the UK Graduate Route visa and strong subject standing in Communication, Dentistry, Computer Science and Law. A total investment of ₹47.00 lakh to ₹65.00 lakh over one PG year, against a median starting salary of ₹37.70 lakh to ₹44.20 lakh, gives most masters a payback inside two working years on the UK Graduate Route.

Cardiff is not the right fit for applicants chasing a QS Top 100 brand at any cost or those set on a London-based network from day one. Realistic peers to weigh against Cardiff include the University of Sheffield, which trades a slightly higher rank for a smaller Indian alumni network in London finance.

Cardiff University FAQs

Ques. What visa do Indian students need to study at Cardiff University?

Ans. Indian students need the UK Student Route visa, sponsored by Cardiff through a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter. The visa application is submitted online with a £524 fee plus £776 per year Immigration Health Surcharge. Cardiff issues the CAS after the applicant accepts the offer and pays the tuition deposit. Approval turnaround at Indian VFS centres runs three to four weeks in peak intake months.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Cardiff University?

Ans. Yes, Cardiff University students on the UK Student Route visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. Common on-campus roles include Student Ambassador, library assistant and Students’ Union positions, all paying at or above the UK national living wage. Cardiff’s JobShop office curates part-time roles specifically for international students and posts new listings weekly.

Ques. Does Cardiff University require GRE or GMAT scores from Indian applicants?

Ans. Cardiff University does not require GRE for any master’s programme and does not require GMAT for its taught masters. The MBA at Cardiff Business School may request GMAT from applicants with a weak quantitative background, but a 3+ year work-experience profile usually substitutes. This puts Cardiff among the most test-flexible Russell Group options for Indian STEM and business applicants.

Ques. How does Cardiff University process transcripts from Indian universities?

Ans. Cardiff accepts scanned transcripts and mark sheets uploaded to the online application portal for the initial review. Formal WES or ECCTIS verification is not mandatory but is often requested for degrees from non-UGC-recognised institutions. Once offered, Indian applicants must send an attested transcript copy directly from their university before CAS is issued. Turnaround for the whole verification pipeline runs four to six weeks.

Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for Cardiff University?

Ans. Cardiff University is on the approved list for all major Indian education lenders including SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India. Secured loans up to ₹1.50 crore are available with fixed deposits or property as collateral; unsecured loans up to ₹50 lakh are common for STEM masters. Interest rates in August 2026 run 9.5% to 11.5% for public-sector banks.

Ques. What is the application fee for Cardiff University postgraduate courses?

Ans. Cardiff University charges no application fee for most postgraduate taught programmes, which is unusual among Russell Group universities and lowers the cost of applying to multiple courses. The MBA and select professional programmes at the Business School charge a £60 application fee. Fee waivers on MBA applications are available for Cardiff alumni and for applicants nominated through partner Indian institutions.

Ques. Can dependents accompany Indian students to Cardiff University?

Ans. Dependents (spouse and children) can accompany Indian students on the UK Student Route visa only for PhD or research masters lasting nine months or more. Taught one-year masters students are not eligible to bring dependents under the 2024 UK visa rules, which affects most Indian applicants at Cardiff. The rule applies uniformly across UK Russell Group universities.

Ques. How long does Cardiff University take to release an admission decision?

Ans. Cardiff University aims to release a decision within four to six weeks of a complete application for most postgraduate taught programmes. Competitive courses in Data Science, Cybersecurity and Finance can take longer during peak review months of January and February. The MBA follows a rolling review with decisions in six to eight weeks. Incomplete applications sit on hold until the missing document is received.

    • The campus is situated throughout the city. From a PhD perspective, there are many workshops and training sessions arranged by the doctoral academy.

    Fees

    • 6600 GBP per year at the home student rate

    • Two campuses. There are libraries and, sports room. Nightclubs. Medical and therapy services. Well-being group meet-ups. Volunteering everything. I did not have much time to join any sports, so I wouldn't know. Sorry for this. As I said, my course was theoretical, I had a lot of studies did not have time for all this, but given the chance to study a bachelor's here, I would've done more.

    Fees

    • The tuition fee was almost £21,000. The living cost per month, I would say, was £200 for food, transport and stuff, but this kept fluctuating. And the rent for the accommodation I was living in was £8,490. The breakdown of fees was for admission, they took £2000, which is to book my place at the uni, so that no one else takes it. A weird detail here is that this rule doesn't apply to home students. Also, we pay three times the amount they pay for tuition.
    • There's no semester rota here, only that you pay the tuition fee either in full before arriving or you pay it in three instalments. I chose an instalment. I'm not sure the breakdown at this moment because it was back in 2023. Sorry for this. And even if I mention the tuition fees are not the same as they were before, same as the accommodation cost, I believe. My rent was also paid in instalments for the year, but I suppose the monthly rent would be £625. And along with that, there were regular expenses as well, so the living costs would come around £1000 or more per month. It's so expensive.

    • There were around 5 - 6 buildings/campuses of the University in the whole City. There was also a research facility of my school around 40 km from the City. There were plenty of student living buildings owned by the university.
    • There were around 6 libraries around the city that were part of the University. There was a Student union building that had gym, study halls, pubs, cafes, restaurants, grocery stores, etc.
    • There was a team by the name of Cardiff University Residence Life that organised multiple events which celebrated festivals from around the world, organised trips for students, organised mini events for student engagement and many more. There were local Indian communities that organised Indian festivals as well.

    Fees

    • Tuition fee for the course was £25400. I received a scholarship of £5000. Fees were paid in 3 instalments over the course period, which was 1 year, along with the first confirmation payment of £2000.
    • There were various options for stay, including privately rented student spaces and ones provided by the university. I opted for university-provided accommodation, which was at the rate of £124 per week for a time period of 51 weeks.
    • Monthly expenses, including rent, were around £1000.

    • The majority of Cardiff university’s academic buildings, libraries and Student’s Union (SU) are situated on the Cathays Park campus, which is home to the university’s campus life. The campus provided first-rate amenities that made daily academic life easier, including state-of-the-art lecture rooms, IT labs and study areas. The ‘Give it a go’ initiative made it simple for me to figure out professional societies, cultural groups and even informal hobby-based clubs. International students had a strong sense of community because of the frequent concerts, student club nights and cultural events like Diwali, Holi, Bollywood nights and Lunar new year held at major venues like Y Plas and the Great Hall.
    • My programme frequently organised networking events, workshops and guest lectures that were very beneficial to the department. These gatherings frequently introduced us to alumni and business leaders, assisting us in understanding potential career options and boosting our self-esteem for life beyond graduation. Additionally, the department promoted involvement in university-wide events, which allowed us to strike a balance between extracurricular activities and academic focus. One of the highlights of my experience was seeing how the campus combined social and academic life seamlessly. For example, it was typical for students to attend a society event or unwind at the Taf, the SU’s student-run bar, following a demanding day of lectures. Many of my classmates became members of departmental societies, which facilitated career discussions, mixers, and socials in addition to fostering academic development.
    • All things considered, Cardiff University’s advanced amenities, department-led activities and active extracurricular environment made my time there memorable and well-rounded. It was about joining a supportive and diverse community as much as it was about academics.

    Fees

    • Though I will not be able to give you a complete breakdown, as it has been well over a year, my tuition fees were GBP 24000 for the one-year course. And I was staying in a private student accommodation, which was GBP 9000 for a year. But one can stay in student accommodation, where it would be a little cheaper but the distance from the university to the student accommodation is a little bit odd and also they do not give that kind of facility if one pays a little bit extra.
    • Cardiff in itself is very much affordable and student-friendly. Monthly expenses for me were around GBP 300, but I knew some of my friends who used to survive on GBP 150, so it completely depends on the needs and requirements of the individual.

    • One campus in Cardiff. Facilities included recording rooms, conference halls, computing rooms with digital editing software and cutting-edge technology, a library, a sports facility, a research facility, a childcare facility, cybersecurity and a 3D printing lab. Clubs include reading, journalism, and hiking. gym, dance (both Indian and Western), A Cappella, Abacus, Drama, health-related clubs, including Yoga. The list is endless. if you are determined, you will find your people here.
    • Student organisation is active and they make a point to talk about their agendas and electoral pledges. They will also reach out to you. You can also run for student body elections. Everything for sports and ECA is there.

    Fees

    • I got a scholarship for GBP 2k, after which my tuition was GBP 18k. It was a one-year course so that was it. Estimate of monthly expense: Rent for student accommodation: £450; groceries around £120; miscellaneous (travel, etc.): £100. if to get a job, most of the living expenses are manageable. Most people, however, do need a job to live. And, almost all jobs pay around £10 per hour on average.

    • My college overall has several campuses – more than 6-7 overall. They are all equally well-equipped. There are several events, entertaining and academic but I did not get the time to participate in many of them. Being an Indian, I had participated in the Indian festivals in the beginning, which are held on campus.

    • Is there an application fee for the program you want? • Do they provide application fee waivers for financially struggling students? • What are the English language requirements for the scholarship? • Can you apply without IELTS based on your previous education?
