The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Information Technology at Kerala University is a 4-year full-time undergraduate engineering programme offered through affiliated engineering colleges under the University of Kerala, including the University's own institution - University College of Engineering, Kariavattom. The programme covers core areas of IT including programming, data structures, algorithms, computer networks, database management systems, operating systems, software engineering, web technologies, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Admission is through KEAM (Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical), the state-level entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. The annual tuition fee at Government engineering colleges is Rs. 8,650 per year (total Rs. 34,600 for 4 years), making it one of the most affordable B.Tech IT programmes in India. KU B.Tech IT FAQs

Ques. Is KEAM mandatory for B.Tech IT admission at Kerala University affiliated colleges?

Ans. Yes, KEAM (Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical) is the primary entrance examination for B.Tech IT admission at all Government, Aided, and most Self-Financing engineering colleges affiliated to Kerala University. The exam is conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. However, some Self-Financing colleges may also accept JEE Main scores for Non-Keralite candidates. For Keralite candidates, KEAM is the standard route. The KEAM 2026 exam was conducted from April 17-22, 2026, and the result is expected by May 10, 2026.

Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech IT at a Government college and at the University College of Engineering, Kariavattom?

Ans. The University College of Engineering, Kariavattom is a direct institution of Kerala University (not just an affiliated college), located on the main Kariavattom campus. It offers B.Tech IT with merit seat fees of Rs. 36,750 per year, which is higher than the Rs. 8,650 per year at Government engineering colleges. However, being a University institution, it has direct access to University resources, faculty, and research facilities. Government engineering colleges like GEC Barton Hill (Thiruvananthapuram) offer B.Tech IT at the subsidised rate of Rs. 8,650 per year and are highly competitive in terms of KEAM rank requirements.

Ques. What KEAM rank is required for B.Tech IT at Government colleges under Kerala University?

Ans. The KEAM rank required for B.Tech IT varies each year based on the number of applicants and seat availability. For Government engineering colleges in Thiruvananthapuram (like GEC Barton Hill), a KEAM rank within the top 5,000-10,000 (General category) is typically required for B.Tech IT. For the University College of Engineering, Kariavattom, the rank requirement may be slightly different. Exact cutoffs are published by CEE Kerala after each round of counselling. Candidates are advised to check the previous year's cutoff ranks on the CEE Kerala website for reference.

Ques. Can I get admission to B.Tech IT at Kerala University colleges without appearing in KEAM?

Ans. For Keralite candidates, KEAM is mandatory for admission to Government and Aided engineering colleges. However, some Self-Financing colleges affiliated to Kerala University may admit students through management quota without KEAM, subject to meeting the basic eligibility criteria (45% in PCM in Class 12). Non-Keralite candidates may also be considered based on JEE Main scores at some institutions. It is advisable to check the specific admission policy of the college you are interested in.

Ques. What are the career prospects after B.Tech IT from a Kerala University affiliated college?

Ans. B.Tech IT graduates from Kerala University affiliated colleges have strong career prospects, particularly given Kerala's thriving IT sector. Thiruvananthapuram's Technopark (one of India's largest IT parks) and Kochi's Infopark are major employers. Graduates can pursue careers as software developers, web developers, data analysts, cybersecurity analysts, cloud engineers, IT consultants, and system administrators. Top recruiters include TCS, Infosys, Wipro, UST Global, IBS Software, and various startups. Higher education options include M.Tech (through GATE), MCA, MBA in IT, or MS abroad.

Ques. What scholarships are available specifically for female B.Tech IT students at Kerala University colleges?

Ans. Female B.Tech IT students at AICTE-approved colleges under Kerala University can apply for the Pragati Scholarship, which provides Rs. 50,000 per year (covering tuition fee and incidentals). This scholarship is specifically for female students from families with annual income below Rs. 8 lakh. Additionally, the E-Grantz scheme covers SC/ST female students for full fee reimbursement. The Kerala Government also periodically announces special scholarships for female students in technical education. Applications for Pragati Scholarship are submitted through the AICTE scholarship portal (scholarships.aicte-india.org) after admission.
