KU M.Tech FAQs

Ques. Is GATE mandatory for admission to M.Tech Technology Management at Kerala University?

Ans. No, GATE is not mandatory for admission to this programme. The university conducts its own entrance examination for all candidates. However, candidates with a valid GATE score are given priority in the rank list over non-GATE candidates. Non-GATE candidates are ranked based on their aggregate CGPA or percentage marks in the qualifying examination and are considered for seats that remain vacant after GATE score holders are accommodated. So while GATE improves your chances significantly, you can still apply and get admission without it.

Ques. What is the scope of M.Tech Technology Management from the Department of Futures Studies, Kerala University?

Ans. The Department of Futures Studies is one of the very few departments in India that focuses on futures research and technology management together. Graduates from this programme have gone on to work in multinational companies, central and state government organisations, R&D institutions, and academic roles. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme, combining technology, management, and futures thinking, makes graduates suitable for roles in strategic planning, technology policy, innovation management, and consulting. The department's alumni network spans both the public and private sectors.

Ques. What is the actual fee I need to pay at the time of admission, and is any part of it refundable?

Ans. The total academic fee for the 2-year M.Tech programme is approximately Rs. 25,320. At the time of admission, you will need to pay the one-time fees (admission fee, affiliation, library, stationery, internet, union fees, magazine, sports, student aid, student care fund, medical, women study unit fee) along with the first semester tuition fee of Rs. 840. The Caution Deposit is also collected at admission and is refundable upon successful completion of the course. SC/ST and OEC candidates are exempt from paying most fees at the time of admission.

Ques. Can students from outside Kerala apply for this programme?

Ans. Yes, non-Keralite candidates can apply for this programme. However, they are not eligible for reservation benefits (SEBC, SC/ST, OEC, EWS) or any fee concessions. One supernumerary seat is reserved for a non-Keralite candidate from the rank list. Non-Keralite candidates without a GATE score are also eligible to apply and will be ranked based on their qualifying examination marks, but they will only be considered for seats remaining after Keralite candidates are accommodated.

Ques. How is the entrance examination conducted, and what is the syllabus?

Ans. The entrance examination consists of 100 multiple choice questions (MCQs) carrying 100 marks, to be completed in 2 hours. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. The questions cover subject knowledge at the qualifying examination level along with logical and numerical reasoning. The rank list is prepared based on percentile scores. The examination is conducted at multiple centres across Kerala including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur. Candidates can opt for up to three preferred centres.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for M.Tech students at Kerala University?

Ans. Yes, the University of Kerala has separate men's and women's hostels at the Kariavattom Campus where the Department of Futures Studies is located. Hostel allotment for M.Tech students is done separately through the university hostel portal after admission. The hostel fee for female students is approximately Rs. 6,115 per year. Hostel accommodation is not guaranteed and is subject to availability; students are advised to apply early after securing admission. The hostel is not mandatory and is not included in the total academic fee of Rs. 25,320.
