IMPORTANT NOTICE: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially discontinued the M.Phil. programme across all universities in India as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The UGC reiterated in December 2023 that M.Phil. degrees are no longer recognised, and universities have been directed to cease admissions. Kerala universities, including the University of Kerala, have discontinued M.Phil. admissions following these UGC instructions. Prospective students are strongly advised NOT to seek admission to M.Phil. programmes as the degree is not recognised by UGC.

THIS COURSE IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THIS COLLEGE (admissions discontinued as per UGC directive).

The M.Phil. (Commerce) was previously a 1-year full-time research-oriented programme offered at the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. It was designed to bridge the gap between postgraduate studies and doctoral research, providing students with advanced research skills in commerce. The programme was structured across 2 semesters and included coursework and a dissertation. The total fees were approximately Rs. 30,300 (as per 2019-20 data; current fees not applicable as admissions are discontinued).

The programme has been discontinued in accordance with UGC regulations under NEP 2020. Students who were enrolled in M.Phil. programmes before the discontinuation are permitted to complete their degrees. However, no fresh admissions are being made.

For students interested in research in Commerce, the following alternatives are available:

  • Ph.D. (Commerce) at Kerala University: Direct Ph.D. admission is now available for M.Com graduates with 55% marks. This is the recommended path for research in commerce.
  • Integrated Ph.D. programmes at select universities.
  • UGC NET/JRF qualification, which is the primary route for research fellowships and academic careers.
