KU Ph.D. (Aquatic Biology & Fisheries) FAQs
Ques. Can I apply for PhD in Aquatic Biology & Fisheries at Kerala University if my M.Sc. is from another university?
Ans. Yes, you can apply provided your M.Sc. degree is from a recognised university and you have secured at least 55% aggregate marks. However, since your qualifying degree is from another university, you will need to obtain an Eligibility Certificate from the University of Kerala at the time of admission. Candidates from other universities are also required to register as a matriculate of the University of Kerala after admission. It is advisable to check with the Department of Aquatic Biology & Fisheries directly to confirm subject equivalence before applying.
Ques. I have cleared UGC-NET Category 3 (PhD admission only, without JRF). Am I exempt from the Kerala University PhD Entrance Test?
Ans. Yes. Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET in any of the three categories, including Category 3 (eligibility for PhD admission only), are exempt from the Kerala University PhD Entrance Examination, provided their UGC-NET certificate is valid and has not expired at the time of application. You will still need to appear for the interview/presentation before the Doctoral Committee. Note that Category 3 NET holders are not eligible for the UGC-JRF fellowship stipend; only Category 1 (JRF) holders receive the monthly fellowship.
Ques. How competitive is it to get a PhD seat in Aquatic Biology & Fisheries at Kerala University? How many seats are available?
Ans. The seats are very limited. In the January 2026 session, only 4 vacancies were available in Aquatic Biology & Fisheries across all supervisors in the department. The actual number of candidates who can be admitted depends on the number of approved supervisors with available vacancies. Students and alumni consistently report that vacancy scarcity is the biggest challenge, and many qualified candidates have to wait for multiple sessions or consider other universities. It is strongly recommended to contact potential supervisors in the department well in advance to understand their current research capacity.
Ques. What is the difference between Full-Time and Part-Time PhD at Kerala University, and can I switch between the two modes?
Ans. Full-Time PhD requires the scholar to be present at the research centre on all working days and is not compatible with regular employment unless on leave without pay. Part-Time PhD is available for employed candidates who submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer. Part-time scholars are not eligible for any fellowship or scholarship. Conversion from Full-Time to Part-Time is permitted only after completing mandatory course work (minimum 6 months) and only upon getting permanent employment. A conversion fee of Rs. 1,320 applies, and late conversion attracts an additional fine ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000 depending on the delay period.
Ques. Is it mandatory to publish research papers before submitting the PhD thesis at Kerala University?
Ans. As per the UGC Regulations 2022 (which Kerala University follows), there is no mandatory requirement to publish a specific number of papers before thesis submission. However, the Doctoral Committee of the department may have its own expectations, and having at least one publication in a UGC-recognised or peer-reviewed journal significantly strengthens your research record. The university requires completion of mandatory course work, regular progress reviews, and a pre-submission open defence before the thesis can be submitted. Ethical Committee Clearance is also mandatory for research involving human subjects.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing a PhD in Aquatic Biology & Fisheries from Kerala University?
Ans. A PhD from Kerala University in Aquatic Biology & Fisheries opens doors to academic positions such as Assistant Professor in colleges and universities, research scientist roles in government bodies such as CMFRI (Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute), CIFE (Central Institute of Fisheries Education), ICAR institutes, and the Kerala Fisheries Department. Graduates also find opportunities in environmental consultancy, aquaculture industry, NGOs working on coastal conservation, and policy roles in fisheries management. The degree is well-recognised within Kerala and across India for academic recruitment, and many alumni have secured positions in national research institutes and state fisheries departments.
