KU Ph.D. (Politics) FAQs
Ques. Is UGC NET mandatory for PhD admission at Kerala University, or can I appear for the University's own entrance exam?
Ans. Both routes are valid. Candidates who have qualified UGC NET (in any of the three categories - JRF, Assistant Professor, or PhD only), CSIR NET, GATE, SLET (Kerala), or hold an M.Phil degree are exempted from the University's own entrance test and are directly called for an interview before the Doctoral Committee. If you have not qualified any of these, you need to appear for the PhD Entrance Examination (General Aptitude Test) conducted by the University of Kerala, typically notified in August each year. Clearing the entrance test alone is not sufficient - you must also clear the subsequent interview, with 70% weightage given to the entrance test and 30% to the interview.
Ques. How many seats are available for PhD in Politics at Kerala University, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. There is no fixed seat intake announced in advance. Vacancies depend entirely on the number of approved Research Supervisors in the Department of Political Science and how many scholars each supervisor is currently guiding (a Professor can guide up to 8, Associate Professor up to 6, and an Assistant Professor up to 4 at a time). The vacancy list for each session is published on the Research Portal before the notification. In practice, vacancies in the Politics department are limited, and competition is high - especially since many candidates with UGC-NET/JRF qualifications apply. It is strongly advised to check the vacancy list before applying.
Ques. Can I pursue PhD in Politics at Kerala University while working full-time in a job?
Ans. No, you cannot pursue full-time PhD research while being employed, unless you obtain Leave Without Allowance (LWA) from your employer. However, you can opt for part-time PhD registration if you are employed, provided you submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer stating that you are permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis and can be relieved for course work if required. Note that part-time scholars are not eligible for any fellowship or scholarship from the University or external agencies.
Ques. What is the actual total cost of doing a PhD in Politics at Kerala University for a full-time scholar without any fellowship?
Ans. The fees are extremely nominal. The one-time costs include Affiliation Fee (Rs. 750) and Registration Fee (Rs. 800). The Annual Research Fee is Rs. 1,000 per year for Category I subjects (which includes Political Science). For a minimum 3-year duration, the total university fees come to approximately Rs. 18,050 (including pre-submission fee of Rs. 4,000, thesis submission fee of Rs. 5,000, and open defence fee of Rs. 1,500 per year). If you stay in the university hostel, an additional Rs. 3,000 per month (approximately) is payable. Most full-time scholars with UGC-JRF receive Rs. 37,000 per month, which more than covers all expenses.
Ques. How long does it typically take to complete a PhD in Politics at Kerala University, and what are the extension rules?
Ans. The minimum duration is 3 years from the date of registration. The maximum permissible period is 6 years for full-time scholars. If the thesis is not submitted within the permissible period, a fine is levied on delayed submission (Rs. 1,000 for 6 months to 1 year delay; Rs. 2,000 for 1-2 years; Rs. 5,000 for 2-5 years; Rs. 2,000 per year beyond 5 years). In practice, many scholars take 4-5 years to complete the degree. The course work (mandatory 6 months) must be completed within the first year of registration, and the Open Defence (viva voce) is conducted after thesis submission and external evaluation.
Ques. What career options are available after completing a PhD in Politics from Kerala University?
Ans. A PhD in Politics from Kerala University opens doors to academic careers as Assistant Professor in government and aided colleges (UGC NET + PhD is the standard requirement), research positions in think tanks and policy institutes, and senior roles in the civil services (IAS, IFS, IPS). The University of Kerala degree is well-recognised across Kerala and nationally. Many alumni have gone on to become faculty members in Kerala's government colleges, researchers at institutions like ICSSR, and officers in the Kerala Administrative Service. The degree also strengthens applications for post-doctoral fellowships from ICSSR, UGC, and international bodies.
