MGU PhD FAQs
Ques. How does rolling admission for external fellowship holders work at MGU?
Ans. MGU accepts applications from candidates holding CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, INSPIRE, DBT, ICMR, MANF, or DST Women Scientist fellowships at any time in the year, outside the standard June and December windows. Submit your fellowship award letter, postgraduate marksheets with at least 55 percent aggregate, and a research proposal on researchonline.mgu.ac.in. The department verifies your fellowship status and supervisor availability before confirming admission.
Ques. What happens if I am not NET/JRF qualified and want a Ph.D at MGU?
Ans. You must appear for the MGU Ph.D Entrance Test at university departments. Shortlisted candidates then attend a departmental doctoral interview. Final selection depends on your performance and available positions. Passing the entrance test is only provisional and eligibility is confirmed after certificate verification at the interview.
Ques. What is the difference between the June and December Ph.D sessions at MGU?
Ans. The June/July session opens applications in July with the entrance exam in late September. The December session opens in January of the following year. Both follow the same eligibility and selection process. If you miss June, you can apply in December without waiting a full year. Check phdadmission.mgu.ac.in for subjects offered in each cycle.
Ques. How does the Chief Minister Research Fellowship for Minorities work at MGU?
Ans. This fellowship provides INR 20,000 per month for up to 5 years to Ph.D scholars from minority communities enrolled at MGU. It is funded by the Kerala state government and covers Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, and Parsi candidates. Apply through the state minority welfare department after securing Ph.D admission, with a valid minority community certificate.
Ques. Can a 4-year Honours graduate apply for Ph.D at MGU without a Master’s degree?
Ans. Yes. UGC regulations allow holders of a 4-year Honours Bachelor’s degree with at least 75 percent marks to apply directly for Ph.D at MGU. Your discipline should be relevant to the Ph.D department. The 75 percent threshold is stricter than the 55 percent required for Master’s degree holders, so confirm your transcript clearly states the Honours degree and aggregate.
Ques. What research disciplines does MGU offer and is interdisciplinary Ph.D work possible?
Ans. MGU covers 40 departments: sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Mathematics, Biosciences), environmental studies (Climate Studies, Polymer Science), social sciences (Economics, Psychology, Law), and humanities (English, Arabic, Gandhian Studies). Interdisciplinary research is possible if a supervisor agrees to co-guide across departments and the doctoral committee approves the proposal. The breadth of 40 departments on one campus makes cross-disciplinary work more accessible than at most specialised institutes.
