RTMNU PhD FAQs
Ques. How does PhD supervisor allocation work at RTMNU and can a student choose a specific guide?
Ans. After the PET and personal interview, RTMNU allocates supervisors based on research interest alignment and guide availability. Students can express a preference at the interview stage. A recognised guide is limited to eight PhD scholars at any time per UGC norms. Contacting potential supervisors before applying to confirm guide availability and research fit is strongly recommended.
Ques. Is a part-time PhD option available at RTMNU and what are the conditions?
Ans. RTMNU allows part-time PhD enrolment for working professionals under UGC PhD Regulations 2022. A No Objection Certificate from the employer is required. The minimum duration is extended beyond 3 years for part-time scholars. Residency obligations, progress reports, and pre-submission seminars still apply. Confirm current part-time policy with the RTMNU PhD Cell before applying.
Ques. How does the NET/JRF/GATE PET exemption work at RTMNU and when does it lapse?
Ans. Candidates holding a valid UGC-NET, UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, GATE, or Maharashtra SET skip the PET and go directly to the personal interview. The exemption is valid only while the qualifying certificate is within its validity period. For example, a GATE score is valid for three years from the result date. Candidates must apply for PhD before the certificate lapses and must carry proof of qualification to the interview.
Ques. Is an RTMNU PhD recognised for faculty appointments in central universities and IITs?
Ans. An RTMNU PhD satisfies the UGC minimum qualification for Assistant Professor posts across Indian universities and colleges, as RTMNU is a NAAC Grade A state university. For central universities or IITs, research output including peer-reviewed publications matters alongside the degree. Building a strong publication record during the PhD significantly improves employability regardless of the awarding institution.
Ques. Can RTMNU PhD scholars access CSIR, DST, or ICSSR funded research projects?
Ans. Scholars can contribute to externally funded projects held by their RTMNU guide. CSIR, DST, DBT, and ICSSR do fund projects at RTMNU. Availability depends on the supervisor and department. JRF-qualified scholars carry an independent stipend regardless of guide-level funding, making them financially secure throughout the PhD even when external grants are absent.
Ques. What is the PhD thesis submission and evaluation process at RTMNU?
Ans. After at least 3 years, the scholar presents a pre-submission seminar to the Doctoral Committee, incorporates feedback, and then submits the thesis to the RTMNU PhD Cell. Two external examiners evaluate the thesis, with one from outside Maharashtra per UGC norms. A satisfactory written evaluation is followed by an open viva voce. The degree is awarded after the viva and all examiner corrections are approved. The submission-to-degree timeline typically ranges from 6 to 12 months.
