About LPU Ph.D
Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab offers a full-time Ph.D in 62 specialisations, from Psychology to Pharmacology. The minimum time is three years and the limit is six. LPU holds NAAC A++ and stands #31 in the NIRF University ranking 2025. The full fee is INR 3.30 Lakhs for three years without hostel, the same for every specialisation, and INR 6.69 Lakhs with a two seater hostel room. You get in through LPUNEST and an interview, or skip the test with UGC NET, CSIR NET, GATE or GPAT. LPU Ph.D Fees
The total fees with hostel is INR 6.69 Lakhs and without hostel INR 3.30 Lakhs. The programme fee is INR 3 Lakhs of that, paid INR 50,000 a semester for six semesters. You pay the programme fee every semester till you submit your thesis. The thesis evaluation fee of INR 20,000 is paid once at the end, on top of these totals.

LPU Ph.D Eligibility
You need 55% in a two-year master's in your subject, or 65% for the Agriculture group. SC, ST, OBC, PwD and EWS students get 5% off these marks. A four-year bachelor's with 75% also counts outside Agriculture. You then write LPUNEST or show a valid NET, GATE or GPAT score.

LPU Ph.D Admission Process
The test counts for 70% of your merit score and the interview for 30%, or 80% and 20% in Agriculture. You register online, write the test or show your exam card, and book an interview slot. The interview panel is from your department. You then pay the first semester fee by the last date of admission.

LPU Ph.D Entry routes
LPUNEST counts for 70% of the merit score, and the interview for the rest. UGC NET, CSIR NET, GATE and GPAT holders skip the test and go to the interview. LPU does not publish a cutoff or seats by course.

LPU Ph.D Placements
A UGC JRF fellowship pays INR 37,000 a month and an SRF INR 42,000 a month, plus HRA. LPU's teaching fellowship pays INR 21,600 a month to those who qualify. LPU publishes no placement figures for Ph.D scholars. Most graduates look for teaching or research jobs on their own.

LPU Ph.D Hostel and Campus
A two seater air cooled room costs INR 1.13 Lakhs a year, and a single AC room INR 1.53 Lakhs. Mess is paid on top. Hostel is optional for Ph.D scholars. The session is about ten months long.

Group
Humanities group
14 courses. INR 3.30 Lakhs for three years without hostel, the same as every group.
Pick it if:
You want to teach in a college: UGC asks for NET for assistant professor posts, so clear NET while you work on this Ph.D.
You hold UGC NET with JRF: you skip LPUNEST, go straight to the interview and can claim 80% off the programme fee.
You can study only on weekends: the coursework can be done on Saturdays and Sundays from January to April.
Skip it if:
You expect monthly money from the university: only JRF holders and teaching fellowship winners get it, and everyone else pays the full fee.
You want to finish in under three years: the rules set three years as the minimum, and the fee is charged till you submit the thesis.
Management and Law group
6 courses. INR 3.30 Lakhs for three years without hostel, the same as every group.
Pick it if:
You plan to teach in a business or law school: UGC asks for NET for assistant professor posts, and a Ph.D counts for promotion.
You scored 150 or more in LPUNEST: you get 60% off the programme fee, the same as a NET Assistant Professor holder.
You want a fixed test pattern: LPUNEST has 100 questions in two hours, half on research methods and half on your subject.
Skip it if:
You want to know the seats in your field first: LPU does not publish Ph.D seats by course, so ask the Admission Cell before you apply.
You need the degree done quickly: coursework alone can take up to the first year, and three years is the minimum.
Engineering group
12 courses. INR 3.30 Lakhs for three years without hostel, the same as every group.
Pick it if:
You want to teach in an engineering college for long: AICTE rules ask for a Ph.D for associate professor and professor posts.
You hold a valid GATE score: you skip LPUNEST, and a GATE percentile of 90 or more takes 60% off the programme fee.
You work and can come only in summer: one coursework option is 15 days in May or June.
Skip it if:
You expect placement figures before you join: LPU does not publish any placement figure for Ph.D scholars.
You want lab testing inside the programme fee: lab and testing charges are paid at actual cost when your work needs them.
Sciences group
13 courses. INR 3.30 Lakhs for three years without hostel, the same as every group.
Pick it if:
You want a research job in a lab: a Ph.D is the usual step into scientist posts and postdoc places in India and abroad.
You hold CSIR NET or a DST INSPIRE fellowship: CSIR NET lets you skip LPUNEST, and INSPIRE fellows get 80% off the programme fee.
You have two Scopus papers or a granted patent: LPU takes 60% off the programme fee for that record.
Skip it if:
You plan to pay for costly lab work yourself: the central lab facility charges for its services on top of the fee, at lower rates.
You need a single room on campus: a single AC room costs INR 1.53 Lakhs a year, much more than the two seater room.
Agriculture group
7 courses. INR 3.30 Lakhs for three years without hostel, the same as every group.
Pick it if:
You want a teaching or research job in farm science: most of these posts ask for NET or a Ph.D, and this degree gives the Ph.D.
You have a master's in agriculture with 65% marks: you meet this group's rule, which is higher than the 55% other groups need.
You prefer a test on farm basics: Paper I for this group asks Basic Agriculture in place of research methods, and the test counts for 80%.
Skip it if:
Your master's marks are below 65%: this group needs 65%, so check the 5% relaxation for SC, ST, OBC, PwD and EWS first.
You count on a strong interview: the interview counts for only 20% here, against 30% in the other groups.
Pharmacy and Health group
10 courses. INR 3.30 Lakhs for three years without hostel, the same as every group.
Pick it if:
You want research jobs in drug companies: pharma firms hire Ph.D holders for research and quality control work, and GPAT holders skip LPUNEST here.
You hold a GPAT score of 90 percentile or more: you get 60% off the programme fee as a full-time scholar.
You want a wide choice of subjects: this group has 10 courses, from Pharmacology to Physiotherapy.
Skip it if:
You want the fee to stop after three years: the programme fee is charged every semester till you submit your thesis.
You cannot attend most coursework classes: each course needs 75% attendance and 55% marks to pass.
Counsellor's advice
If you hold NET, GATE or GPAT, apply without LPUNEST and ask for your fee waiver. If not, pick the group of your master's subject. The fee is the same in every group.
