IMU MBA (PSM) FAQs
Ques. Is IMU-CET mandatory for admission to MBA (Port & Shipping Management) at IMU Chennai, or can I apply with CAT/MAT/CMAT scores?
Ans. IMU-CET is not strictly mandatory for MBA admission at IMU. You can apply using valid scores from CAT 2025, MAT (Sep 2025, Dec 2025, Feb 2026, or May 2026), or CMAT 2025/2026. However, IMU gives clear preference to candidates with IMU-CET 2026 ranks during seat allotment. If you have already appeared for CAT or MAT, you can register directly on the IMU counselling portal (which opens after IMU-CET results) without registering for IMU-CET. For residual seats remaining after the third admission list, UG marks are also accepted through spot counselling. So while IMU-CET is not compulsory, having a good IMU-CET rank significantly improves your chances of securing a seat in your preferred campus.
Ques. The MBA (PSM) at IMU is described as "Non-Residential." Does this mean there is no hostel facility?
Ans. Non-Residential means the programme does not include mandatory hostel accommodation as part of the course structure, unlike residential programmes such as B.Tech Marine Engineering. However, outstation students can apply for hostel accommodation at the IMU Chennai campus subject to availability and at IMU's discretion. If hostel is allotted, an additional fee of Rs. 70,000 per year (covering accommodation and messing) is charged separately. This is not included in the standard course fee of Rs. 4,10,000. Students are advised to confirm hostel availability directly with the campus before finalising admission, as it is not guaranteed.
Ques. What is the typical salary package after completing MBA (Port & Shipping Management) from IMU Chennai, and which companies recruit from this programme?
Ans. Fresher packages for MBA (PSM) graduates from IMU typically range from Rs. 3.5 to 8 LPA depending on the role and company. Top offers for select profiles in shipping operations, chartering, or business development can go up to Rs. 10-15 LPA. Key recruiters include Maersk, Safmarine, UASC, Mumbai Port Trust, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, Shipping Corporation of India, and various freight forwarding and logistics companies. It is important to note that this is a niche specialisation, and salary growth is typically stronger after 3-5 years of experience in the maritime sector. Candidates with internship experience at ports or shipping companies and additional skills in data analytics or trade documentation tend to command better packages.
Ques. How is the IMU-CET exam structured for MBA admission, and what topics should I focus on?
Ans. The IMU-CET for MBA programmes consists of 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) covering four sections: Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability, and Logical Reasoning. The exam is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode and lasts 3 hours (11 AM to 2 PM). There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. The difficulty level is broadly comparable to other national MBA entrance exams. Since IMU-CET is less competitive than CAT, candidates with a decent preparation in standard MBA entrance topics can score well. IMU also provides model question papers on its official website for practice. The exam is held once a year, and the 2026 exam is scheduled for 24 May 2026.
Ques. Can I pursue MBA (Port & Shipping Management) at IMU if I have a non-commerce or non-science background?
Ans. Yes, absolutely. IMU's MBA (PSM) is open to graduates from any discipline, including arts, science, commerce, or engineering. The only academic requirement is a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in your bachelor's degree and 50% marks in English at Class 10, 12, or UG level. There is no restriction based on your undergraduate stream. In fact, many students from diverse backgrounds such as geography, economics, political science, and even engineering join this programme. The curriculum is designed to build maritime domain knowledge from scratch, so prior knowledge of shipping or logistics is not required. What matters more is your interest in the maritime sector and your performance in the entrance exam.
Ques. Is there any work experience requirement for admission to MBA (Port & Shipping Management) at IMU, and does prior maritime experience give any advantage?
Ans. There is no mandatory work experience requirement for admission to the MBA (PSM) programme at IMU. It is open to fresh graduates as well as working professionals. However, prior experience in the maritime, logistics, or shipping sector can be advantageous during placements and internships, as it helps students relate better to the curriculum and stand out to recruiters. During the programme, Semester III includes a mandatory internship component, which gives students practical exposure to port or shipping operations. Candidates with prior sea-time experience or work in freight forwarding, customs, or port operations often find it easier to secure better internship placements and job offers upon graduation.
