University at Buffalo Admission 2027

UB admits Indian applicants in two intakes: Fall (August start) and Spring (January start). Fall is the primary intake for Indian students, with most MS and MBA programmes accepting September through March applications.

Milestone Date Notes for Indian Applicants
Fall 2027 graduate application deadline Varies by programme (December 2026 to March 2027) Confirm departmental date; STEM MS typically January to February
Fall 2027 MBA final round deadline 15 March 2027 Earlier rounds see stronger scholarship consideration
WES credential verification start 6 to 8 weeks before deadline Course-by-course ICAP evaluation is standard for Indian degrees
Fall 2027 programme start Expected August 2027 Semester typically begins late August

Planning note: WES evaluations for Indian transcripts often take 4-6 weeks after institution verification. Order the report immediately after obtaining the provisional certificate to avoid deadline crunches for December cycle programmes.

Students' Comments on Reddit: Getting in isn't described as overly difficult, with most students citing a GPA around 3.0 or higher as sufficient. Popular majors like computer science and engineering are seen as more competitive due to high demand.

University at Buffalo Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants at University at Buffalo need a recognised bachelor’s degree, strong English proficiency, and WES-verified transcripts. Standardised test needs vary by department.

Graduate (PG) Requirements

  • Four-year bachelor’s from a recognised university with minimum GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (approximately 65% in the Indian first-class system)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 6.5 overall, PTE 55
  • WES course-by-course credential evaluation of all Indian academic records
  • GRE required for certain MS engineering and science programmes; GMAT preferred for MBA with waivers for strong quantitative profiles

Undergraduate (UG) Requirements

  • Class 12 CBSE, ICSE or state board with strong grades in relevant subjects (typically 80%+ for engineering, 75%+ for other streams)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 70 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 6.0 overall
  • School-verified transcripts; WES is not required for most freshman applications

University at Buffalo Acceptance Rate 2027

University at Buffalo posts a moderately selective undergraduate acceptance profile around 68%, based on published estimates. Graduate admissions run at the department level and vary significantly by programme.

UB’s undergraduate acceptance rate sits at around 68% (estimated figure). MS engineering and MBA programmes historically report tighter selection, with STEM disciplines drawing more competitive applicant pools than general graduate offerings.

Indian applicants with a GPA of 3.5+ and GRE 320+ face favourable odds at MS engineering programmes. MBA applicants with 2+ years of work experience and GMAT 650+ track close to programme medians.

Reality check: Acceptance rate at a large public research university reflects the aggregate applicant pool, not the difficulty for competitive Indian applicants. Programme-level admit rates matter more than the university-wide figure.

University at Buffalo Campus, Facilities and Student Life

University at Buffalo operates three campuses in the Buffalo-Niagara metropolitan region. Most undergraduate and graduate teaching sits on the 1,200-acre North Campus in Amherst.

  • Location and transport: North Campus (main academic), South Campus (health sciences), Downtown Campus (medical) connected by university shuttle; Buffalo Metro Rail links South Campus to downtown
  • Housing: On-campus residence available; roughly 25% of first-year students housed on campus; international graduate students typically move off-campus after year one
  • Facilities: One of the largest academic libraries in New York State, the Center for Computational Research, and dedicated graduate laboratories across engineering and life sciences
  • Indian student community: Over 1,200 Indian students on campus; active Indian Student Association hosting Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events annually

What Indian students say: Buffalo is significantly more affordable than East Coast metros for graduate living. Winters are long and cold with heavy lake-effect snow; students recommend budgeting for winter clothing from arrival. Public transport is limited outside main routes, so many senior students carpool.

University at Buffalo Scholarships 2027

University at Buffalo reviews all admitted international students for automatic merit consideration. Dedicated Indian-only scholarships are limited; most Indian students access general merit awards or programme-specific funding.

University at Buffalo vs Peer Universities

University at Buffalo sits in the middle-upper tier of US public research universities. The peer set below groups AAU-member and comparable public research institutions Indian students commonly weigh against UB.

University QS World 2027 Annual PG Fee (est.) Differentiator
University at Buffalo (SUNY) #416 $29,100 (₹27.88 lakh) STEM MBA, AAU, moderate Buffalo cost of living
Stony Brook University (SUNY) #468  $28,000 to $30,000 (est.) Sister SUNY with stronger Computer Science ranking
Rutgers University-New Brunswick #314 $33,000 to $35,000 (est.) Larger East Coast alumni network in banking and pharma

University at Buffalo stands out for AAU membership at a mid-tier fee band. It offers research-intensive graduate options at total costs roughly 15-20% below comparable Northeast private research peers.

University at Buffalo suits Indian students seeking a research-intensive US public university at a manageable total cost. The two-year investment of roughly ₹55 lakh (tuition and living combined) against a starting salary near ₹81 lakh delivers a payback horizon under two years for STEM graduates who secure OPT-track roles.

For Indian applicants, University at Buffalo’s AAU membership carries weight with Indian public-sector education lenders and US employers alike. STEM designation on engineering, computing and analytics degrees extends OPT to 36 months, meaningful runway for those pursuing a green card pathway. The 1,200-strong Indian community and active desi student network cushion the transition to Western New York life and off-campus housing.

University at Buffalo may not suit Indian applicants seeking a top-100 QS brand or a coastal metropolitan location. Candidates prioritising higher rankings within the SUNY system may prefer Stony Brook, while those weighing East Coast alumni pull may find Rutgers a stronger fit.

  • There are 2 campuses – north and south. We were mostly in South campus which houses the engineering department. North campus has the medical department and also a hospital. There are quite a few festivals like Halloween, Diwali and Holi. There are a lot of social events at a smaller level too.
  • I was part of a technical group.
  • There were dj nights , pizza parties, hackathons and other events. Some events were sponsored by companies like bank of America, Bloomberg and Amazon.
  • There was a hackathon where bank of america exposed their API for us to build a business use case around it.

Fees

  • I was charged $20000 per year. Most of it was a course fee. There were other charges like an annual fee, examination fee, and course fee. The fee was collected annually.
  • I didn't join the hostel and stayed outside along with my friends. There is an entire area where students live. Mostly houses are 4-bedroom apartments.
  • My monthly rent was $250 per person per month. Groceries cost around $50 per person per week. Bus passes were included in the fee structure. Purchasing cold winter clothes is mandatory, as Buffalo is very cold.

  • 5 campuses, sports complex is really good it has olympic size swimming pool, and the recreation center has almost everything: wrestling, a gym, and badminton also they keep hosting events, so it's worth visiting. Oozefest is the most popular fest; it's more like Mudfest. The library is also really good. they also take frequent outdoor trips.

  • UB provides plenty of facilities to support student life, like libraries—there's one library on the north campus and one on the south campus, which basically offer vast resources for research and study. students who are interested in playing sports can visit state-of-the-art facilities like the Smolinski (I think that's the name) family sport medicine centre and UB Stadium, which is the home for the Buffalo Bulls football team.
  • Also, UB has 400+ student clubs and organizations, which helps students pick their interests for non-academic interests. These also include academic clubs, cultural organizations, hobby groups, and special interest councils. It's open for international students and native students as well. We are allowed to explore and join any of these groups through the UBLinked website.

Fees

  • I would say it was approximately $40,000 for international students.
    • Student Activity Fee: $150 per semester (included in semester fee)
    • Technology Fee: $100 per semester (included in semester fee)
    • Health Insurance: $2,500 per year (included in semester fee)
    • Rent (Off-campus shared apartment): $400–$600
    • Utilities: $100–$150
    • Groceries & Food: $250–$350
    • Transportation: $50–$100 (included in semester fee)
    • Miscellaneous (phone bill, entertainment, personal items): $200–$300
    • Total Estimated Monthly Expenses: Approximately $1000ish
  • These figures are estimates based on my lifestyle choice I made and my housing option I took.

  • 3 campuses. North, south, Downtown. North is the main campus and the largest one. All possible services are there like international students, sports, AI, entrepreneurship, library, career counselling, Entrepreneurship, writing help, language help, and mental help. AI club, UB blackstone launchpad, photography club. Student union with lots of fun activities on a regular basis. Oozefest is a popular event.

Fees

  • Semester-wise, for Fall terms it will be around $15k, including everything. Insurance costs are $1k for Fall and $1.5k for spring terms. Consider tuition fees around $12.5k excluding insurance; the remainder is miscellaneous costs for other facilities of the university.
  • I spend around $1.2K monthly, but generally others are spending $700-$800, including rent and groceries.
  • Transportation is included in miscellaneous costs and will be provided by the university.
