Michigan State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
MSU sets clear academic and English proficiency thresholds for Indian applicants across undergraduate and graduate levels.
Michigan State University PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended) from a recognised Indian university; competitive programmes expect 70% or higher
- English test: TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PTE Academic, or Duolingo English Test accepted; verify programme-specific minimums at the MSU Office of International Students and Scholars page
- Credential evaluation: Course-by-course WES or ECE evaluation required for most graduate programmes
- Standardised tests: GRE or GMAT varies by programme; Broad MBA candidates submit GMAT or GRE unless granted an executive waiver
Michigan State University UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 completion from a recognised Indian board with 80% to 85% (recommended); higher for competitive Broad College and Engineering admissions
- English test: TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PTE Academic, or Duolingo English Test; verify minimums on the official MSU admissions page
Key insight: Indian applicants who completed their bachelor’s degree in English-medium instruction at a recognised university may qualify for an English test waiver at MSU; upload official medium of instruction certificates during application.
Michigan State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Michigan State University reports an acceptance rate of 88% (estimated) for the most recent admission cycle. The rate is based on aggregated third-party data and is not officially published as a single figure by the university; it reflects broad undergraduate access typical of large land-grant flagships.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 88% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 | 87% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2024 | 83% (estimated) | Slight increase since |
Selectivity at MSU rises sharply for competitive programmes such as the Broad Full-Time MBA, Supply Chain Management, and Computer Science, where programme-level acceptance is significantly lower than the overall figure.
Reality check: A high overall acceptance rate does not mean easy admission for Indian graduate applicants; departmental review committees prioritise academic percentile, English test performance, and statement of purpose alignment with programme research strengths.

Michigan State University vs Peer Universities
The peer set for MSU covers other Big Ten and Midwestern flagship public research universities, since Indian applicants routinely evaluate these institutions side by side on cost, ranking, and STEM strength.
| University | QS World 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michigan State University | #182 | 20.8 to 58.6 lakh (estimated) | Top-ranked Supply Chain Management programme in the United States |
| Ohio State University | #97 (estimated) | 31.2 to 61.4 lakh (estimated) | Higher QS ranking and larger research endowment |
| Purdue University | #101 (estimated) | 28.3 to 56.7 lakh (estimated) | Stronger engineering placement outcomes |
| University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign | #85 (estimated) | 37.8 to 66.2 lakh (estimated) | Higher-ranked computer science and engineering programmes |
| Penn State University | #109 (estimated) | 31.2 to 61.4 lakh (estimated) | Wider satellite campus network across Pennsylvania |
MSU stands out for its Supply Chain Management leadership, land-grant heritage, and lower total cost of attendance than most peer flagships. The tuition and living cost gap can save Indian applicants INR 5 to 10 lakh across a two-year MS programme.
Key insight: For Indian applicants choosing between MSU and higher-ranked Big Ten peers, MSU’s cost advantage and STEM-designated programme mix often deliver stronger net return on investment when factoring in scholarship access and OPT-ready degree lists.
MSU suits Indian applicants who want AAU-tier research access, STEM-designated master’s programmes, and a strong assistantship market, all at a total investment of USD 60,000 to 90,000 (INR 56.7 to 85.1 lakh) across a two-year MS. Median MS starting salaries of USD 78,000 (INR 73.7 lakh) deliver a competitive payback window, and the 36-month OPT pathway on an F-1 student visa route anchors the strongest India-specific advantage.
MSU is not the right fit for candidates chasing top-25 global brand rankings, small-cohort teaching, or a coastal United States location. Realistic alternatives with stronger QS positioning include the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Purdue University for computer science and engineering focused applicants.
Michigan State University FAQs
Ques. What English test scores does Michigan State University accept for Indian applicants?
Ans. MSU accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PTE Academic, and the Duolingo English Test for admission from India. Minimum scores vary by programme and academic level, with graduate programmes generally expecting stronger performance than undergraduate. Indian applicants who completed an English-medium bachelor’s degree at a recognised university may qualify for a waiver in select programmes. Confirm exact minimums on the MSU Office of International Students and Scholars page.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at MSU?
Ans. Yes, Indian students on an F-1 visa can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during academic terms and full-time during official university breaks. Off-campus employment requires Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation from the international students office. Typical on-campus roles include library assistants, research assistants, dining hall positions, and administrative support in academic departments.
Ques. How long is the STEM OPT extension for Michigan State University graduates?
Ans. MSU graduates on approved STEM degree programmes qualify for a 24-month Optional Practical Training extension in addition to the standard 12-month OPT, totalling 36 months of post-study work in the United States. STEM-designated programmes include most engineering, computer science, data science, statistics, and quantitative business analytics degrees at MSU. Non-STEM graduates qualify for 12 months of standard OPT.
Ques. Does Michigan State University require GRE or GMAT for graduate admissions?
Ans. GRE requirements vary substantially across MSU’s graduate programmes. Many masters programmes have made the GRE optional or waived it entirely, though competitive science and engineering doctoral tracks still expect strong scores. Broad College MBA candidates submit GMAT or GRE scores unless granted an executive-level waiver based on prior work experience. Verify programme-specific standardised test requirements on each department’s admissions page.
Ques. What is the application fee at MSU for international applicants?
Ans. MSU’s application fee is USD 65 for graduate applicants and USD 65 for undergraduate international applicants (INR 6,143). Fees are non-refundable and must accompany submission through the official online portal. Fee waivers are limited but occasionally granted through official university partnerships, McNair Scholars affiliations, or documented financial hardship. Payment is processed through the online application portal at the time of submission.
Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognize Michigan State University?
Ans. All major Indian public banks including SBI, Bank of Baroda, and Punjab National Bank offer education loans for MSU. Private lenders such as HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Avanse, and Auxilo also cover MSU across their international education portfolios. Non-collateral loans are commonly available up to INR 50 lakh, with higher amounts requiring property or fixed deposit collateral from the applicant’s family.
Ques. How does MSU verify Indian academic transcripts?
Ans. MSU requires course-by-course credential evaluation from World Education Services or Educational Credential Evaluators for most graduate admissions from India. Undergraduate applicants generally submit direct academic records from their Class 10 and Class 12 boards, along with official mark sheets. All Indian applicants should start the transcript evaluation process at least eight to ten weeks before the application deadline to avoid processing delays.
Ques. Can Indian applicants receive a conditional admission offer at Michigan State University?
Ans. Conditional offers are available to Indian applicants who meet MSU’s academic thresholds but fall short on English proficiency scores. The English Language Center at MSU delivers pathway programmes that satisfy the English condition, after which applicants transition into their offered degree without a separate reapplication. Conditional admission is not offered for merit or credential shortfalls beyond the language requirement.

- I had the best experience in my University. Our campus is nearly 5000 acres. We have a Ice Skating Arena, Really Big sports Grounds. 3 Fitness Centers along with badminton, Squash, Basketball courts, Yoga rooms , Gyms and Swimming Pools. Its totally free for students to Use. They also have Dance classes for students like Salsa, Zumba etc. Along with guided workout sessions. We have nearly 3 big Libraries along with study areas in every campus.

There is an inside saying that we can get free food everyday in our campus if we follow all the events hosted in our campus everyday, You always have something or other happening.

Overview
Yes I had to submit SoP, three LoRs and CV. After that one round of interview with 3-4 professors Yes I did have one round of interview before I got an admit. They basically just wanted to check the fluency and how well you can speak in English I knew the prof I wanted to work with and the field in what I was interested in working It’s been great. There are so many resources available for helping you in any regards. People are very nice and helpful. College campus is very much safe and feels like home.

- There are only a handful of universities that offer programs starting in spring which is what I was looking for. With that experience and criteria, I was able to shortlist 3 universities – University of Illinois Chicago, University of Connecticut and Michigan State University. After this it was another easy choice because MSU offered a 12-month program while the other programs lasted for at least 18 months. Also given the fact that Michigan has way smaller number of Indians than the other states it gave me an opportunity to get better exposure while interacting with people from other countries. I really knew what I had to do, and I chose MSU.
- The best part about MSU is that there is much more diversity than other schools. Especially if you are an Indian looking for exposure, this is a good place to be. Over the last couple of years, the influx of grad students has grown exponentially that almost all the big states are flooded with Indians. MSU offers a much diverse population among students and staff, which is great to gain exposure and push your limits.

- "If I had to mention one thing, it's the weather. Not to blame the university for this, but it gets extremely cold in winters and the weather persists like that for around 5 months. Another thing that I would improve about MSU is campus security. I encountered a shooting event in the very second month. That event got me terrified for a week!"
Overview
I'm not sure if I'm the best person to answer this question because I haven't really gotten complete college experience from MSU. That's because I'm enrolled with the 12 month program which is very fast-paced and barely leaves us time to enjoy and take part in other stuff on campus. But if I am to comment on my program and the experience that I am right now having it is very hectic and mentally challenging. The weather in Michigan also makes it physically challenging in the first four months of the program. Personally I'm loving this because I wanted to challenge myself when I came out of India and I'm getting what I wanted.
Campus Life
MSU is one of the biggest land grant universities in the US meaning it is a very big university spread across the town of East Lansing. The infrastructure is top class with great Wi-Fi connectivity over the campus and dining halls for the students. The library resources and the academic buildings are equipped with latest technology that makes teaching and learning processes better. I always prefer to work in the academic buildings by reserving a room for myself rather than staying home because it at least motivates me to work over the day. On the other hand I can't really comment on the extracurricular life and the college life because like I mentioned it's a 12 month program and I barely have time for completing my academic work however I do try to squeeze in small events like student tie dye events coffee hours and meetups. The university also has a very big recreational center with facilities of basketball badminton swimming and other sports which are very well utilized by the students and the faculty of the university.

Overview
I knew that I wanted to go to a college in-state and an MSU was the leading college in business that really caught my eye. It was the perfect distance away from my house which was about an hour and that was great because I could easily get home if I needed to but I wasn't so close that my parents could come up any day or that I felt that I'd be going home too often. On top of that when I visited the campus it was amazing I really loved how everything was so tied in together and so large at the same time. I really felt at home and I really solidified that when I got there. I can go running or for a walk anywhere on campus and it feels like I?m just outside enjoying nature there?s a bunch of trees alongside a bunch of beautiful buildings.

I am not an international student so I'm not sure. I do believe there are some scholarships for them though. However, my tuition was about 14k/year and I got no aid, but I did not take out any loans last year or this year for the fall semester. I did get a Livingston county Spartans scholarship, but it is a group of alums, not the school.
