The City College of New York Admission 2027
CCNY runs two graduate intakes per year: Fall (late August) and Spring (late January). Fall is the primary window for Indian applicants because most funding, research assistantships and Grove School engineering seats sit inside that cycle.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| MS Computer Science, Spring 2027 | 01 November 2026 | Grove School CS single-track deadline |
| MS Comp Eng / EE / Civil / Mechanical, Spring 2027 | 15 November 2026 | Grove Engineering programs cluster deadline |
| MS Computer Science / Engineering, Fall 2027 | Expected 01 May 2027 (based on Fall 2026 cycle) | Data Science and Engineering closes 21 May 2027 |
| Credential verification (WES) | Start 8 to 12 weeks before deadline | Course-by-course WES report required for all Indian bachelor’s degrees |
| Programme start | Late January 2027 (Spring), late August 2027 (Fall) | I-20 issued after admission and financial documents accepted |
Planning note: Indian applicants targeting Fall 2027 should lodge their WES evaluation request by February 2027 at the latest, because the WES turnaround on Indian transcripts routinely stretches to 8 to 10 weeks once documents arrive from the university.

The City College of New York Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants apply through the CUNY Graduate Admissions portal, with test scores, WES evaluation and financial affidavit forming the CCNY admission requirements core.
- Academic eligibility (PG): Four-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum 60% or CGPA 6.0 out of 10 in an allied discipline (recommended); Data Science and Biomedical Engineering typically look for 65% and above.
- English test minimums: TOEFL iBT 61, IELTS Academic 6.5, PTE Academic 53 or Duolingo English Test 100. Grove School engineering programs commonly ask for TOEFL iBT 80 and IELTS 7.0.
- Credential verification: Course-by-course WES evaluation of Indian bachelor’s transcripts is mandatory; the university code for score reporting is 2083.
- GRE: Optional across most Grove School MS programs from the 2027 cycle; verify at the departmental application page for CS, EE and BME.
Class 12 with 75% and above is the working benchmark for competitive undergraduate seats; SAT is optional but recommended for Engineering, Architecture and BME.
Key insight: The TOEFL/IELTS waiver applies only to Indian applicants who completed a full bachelor’s degree in an English-speaking country; a CBSE or ICSE English-medium schooling record alone does not qualify for waiver at CCNY, so plan to sit a test even if your college was English-medium.
The City College of New York Acceptance Rate 2027
CCNY’s overall acceptance rate is 54% (estimated), placing it in the moderately selective band of US public universities. The rate reflects an applicant pool weighted toward New York State residents; competitive Grove School MS tracks like Computer Science and Data Science admit at a tighter 30 to 40% range.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 54% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2023 | 55% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2022 | 52% (estimated) | Slight tightening |
The Grove School of Engineering is the most competitive gate for Indian MS applicants, and CCNY reviews credentials holistically with equal weight on GPA, TOEFL and statement of purpose.
Reality check: Indian applicants clear the CCNY bar more reliably with a CGPA above 7.5 out of 10, a TOEFL iBT of 90-plus and one relevant internship or research paper, because the seat count on funded MS tracks is small even when overall acceptance sits above 50%.

The City College of New York Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027
Total annual cost for an Indian graduate student at CCNY sits at USD 42,000 to 48,000 (INR 40.2 to 46.0 lakh), combining out-of-state tuition and Manhattan-area living costs. That figure is materially lower than private New York peers because CCNY is a public university with regulated CUNY tuition.
The City College of New York Tuition Fees for Indian Students 2027
Tuition for international students is billed at the out-of-state rate; UG and PG differ, and additional student, technology and health-insurance fees apply each semester.
| Level | Annual Tuition (USD) | Annual Tuition (INR lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate (out-of-state international) | USD 18,600 | 17.8 lakh |
| Graduate MS (out-of-state international) | USD 20,832 | 19.9 lakh |
| Mandatory student and health fees | USD 2,500 to 3,200 | 2.4 to 3.1 lakh |

| Expense | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (shared apartment, Harlem or Bronx) | USD 900 to 1,300 | INR 86,000 to 1,24,000 |
| Food and groceries | USD 400 to 550 | INR 38,000 to 53,000 |
| Transportation (MTA 30-day pass) | USD 132 | INR 12,600 |
| Books and academic supplies | USD 80 to 120 | INR 7,700 to 11,500 |
| Personal, phone and utilities | USD 200 to 280 | INR 19,100 to 26,800 |
| Total monthly | USD 1,712 to 2,382 | INR 1.64 to 2.28 lakh |
| Total annual | USD 20,544 to 28,584 | INR 19.7 to 27.4 lakh (estimated) |

Insider note: A single-room lease within a 30-minute subway ride of the 137th Street campus (Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood, South Bronx) routinely lands around USD 1,000, while sub-let rooms in Queens run closer to USD 800; both are honest working rents for a full-time MS student.

The City College of New York Campus, Facilities and Student Life
CCNY sits on a 35-acre Neo-Gothic campus in Harlem, Manhattan, between 130th and 141st Streets. The 137th Street subway stop of the Line 1 train drops students at the main gate.
- Location and transport: Uptown Manhattan campus, seven subway stops from Columbia University and 25 minutes to Midtown; the 145th Street A/B/C/D lines add express access.
- Housing: The Towers Residence Hall houses roughly 600 students; no international-student housing guarantee, so most Indian graduate students take private off-campus leases.
- Facilities: Marshak Science Building, Grove School of Engineering labs, CUNY Advanced Science Research Center and the North Academic Center library form the primary academic infrastructure.
- Indian student community: Active Indian Students Association and South Asian Society run Diwali, Holi and cultural nights; Curry Hill (28th Street) is the go-to Indian food and grocery hub, a 20-minute train ride south.
What Indian students say: The Harlem location gives real Manhattan access at public-university costs, but expect to hunt hard for shared housing in your first month, and factor a MTA monthly pass into every budget from day one.
The City College of New York Scholarships 2027
CCNY offers institutional aid, school-level scholarships and third-party partner awards for international graduate students; none is guaranteed and most require a separate application.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Student Merit Scholarship | Merit | Up to USD 5,000 per year (INR 4.8 lakh) | International graduate applicants with strong academics | With admission application |
| Grove School of Engineering Scholarships | Merit + need | USD 1,000 to 5,000 (INR 96,000 to 4.8 lakh) | Enrolled Grove School graduate students | Verify at official Grove School page |
| Provost’s Scholarship (Engineering, Sciences, Architecture, Education) | Merit | Partial tuition | Admitted students in listed schools | Verify at CCNY financial aid page |
| Colin Powell School Fellowships | Merit | Varies | MPA and Public Service graduate students | February 2027 (est.) |
| Institute of International Education (IIE) partner awards | External | Varies | International applicants nominated through IIE | Rolling |
Planning note: The International Student Merit Scholarship is the single most reliable Indian-eligible award at CCNY, but it caps at USD 5,000 per year against a full annual cost of roughly USD 45,000, so treat it as an offset rather than a funding solution.

The City College of New York Rankings 2026
CCNY’s strongest global ranking is QS, holding a stable band across the last three published editions and lifting one bracket from 2025 to 2026.
| Ranking Body | Latest Edition | Previous Edition | Two Editions Back |
|---|---|---|---|
| QS World | 2026: #1001-1200 | 2025: #1201-1400 | 2024: #1201-1400 |
| QS Sustainability | 2026: #1301-1400 | NA | NA |
| Collegedunia Study Abroad | #630 of 824 globally, #293 of 357 in USA | NA | NA |
[Source: QS Top Universities, Collegedunia Study Abroad]
QS lists a broad subject indicator for CCNY at #101-150, with Engineering and Architecture as its recognised subject clusters. THE and US News Global editions do not carry a stand-alone CCNY entry that could be verified for this update; the CUNY system as a whole appears in QS 2027 at #677.
Key insight: CCNY’s QS band sits within the top 40% of world universities, comfortably clearing the F-1 visa officer bar and Indian bank education-loan eligibility for public US universities.
The City College of New York Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
CCNY graduates place strongly in New York City’s technology, finance, engineering and public-service sectors, with placement outcomes driven by Manhattan-location networking rather than a formal placement cell.
- Median starting salary (MS Engineering): USD 78,000 to 95,000 (INR 74.7 to 91.0 lakh), market median (estimated)
- Employment within six months: Not officially disclosed at university level
- Representative recruiters: Google, IBM, JP Morgan Chase, Con Edison, NYC DOT, Deloitte and regional consulting firms hire regularly from Grove School and Colin Powell School cohorts
- Career support: The CCNY Career and Professional Development Institute runs employer meets, resume workshops and OPT-linked job-search cycles each semester
- Post-study work: F-1 graduates access 12 months of OPT; STEM-designated MS engineering and CS degrees add a 24-month extension for a 36-month total
Insider note: The New York City labour market absorbs CCNY Grove School graduates quickly at the mid-tier salary band, but breaking into top-tier product firms (FAANG, top-bracket quant funds) still needs LeetCode-grade preparation and referrals; the CCNY brand alone does not open those doors.
The City College of New York vs Peer Universities
Indian MS applicants typically compare CCNY against NYU Tandon (private, higher cost), Stony Brook (SUNY flagship) and Rutgers New Jersey (public, similar tuition band) when weighing New York-area engineering options.
| University | QS Rank 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| The City College of New York (CCNY) | #1001-1200 | USD 20,832 / 19.9 lakh | Lowest-cost public university with a Manhattan campus |
| NYU Tandon School of Engineering | #38 (parent NYU) | USD 55,000 / 52.7 lakh (estimated) | Private, higher brand pull for tech recruiting |
| Stony Brook University | #452 | USD 24,500 / 23.5 lakh (estimated) | SUNY flagship, stronger research assistantship pool |
| New York University (NYU) | #38 | USD 60,000 / 57.5 lakh (estimated) | Global brand, Manhattan main campus, private |
CCNY stands out on cost-per-outcome: it charges a fraction of NYU or NYU Tandon tuition while placing MS Engineering graduates into the same New York City recruiter set, backed by the 36-month STEM OPT window.
The City College of New York is the right pick for the cost-conscious Indian STEM applicant who needs a Manhattan address, a STEM-OPT eligible MS engineering degree and a total investment near INR 40 lakh with a working median starting salary of USD 85,000. The recognised name of the CUNY system, the 36-month OPT window on STEM tracks and public-university tuition combine into a stronger ROI than most private New York peers, and the campus placement in Harlem gives real-time access to Manhattan employer networks.
CCNY is not the right fit for applicants prioritising a top-100 QS brand for consulting recruiting, or those seeking guaranteed university housing and heavy on-campus placement scaffolding; NYU Tandon or Stony Brook better serve those profiles.
The City College of New York FAQs
Ques. How much does an MS at The City College of New York cost for Indian students?
Ans. The full MS tuition at CCNY sits around USD 25,020 (INR 23.9 lakh) for a 30-credit programme, with annual tuition billed at the out-of-state international rate of USD 20,832 per year. Add another INR 20 lakh for New York City living costs across the 18 to 24-month programme, taking total investment to roughly INR 40 to 46 lakh, before any scholarship offset.
Ques. Is the GRE required for CCNY graduate engineering programs?
Ans. The GRE is optional for most Grove School of Engineering master’s programs from the 2027 cycle, including Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Civil Engineering. Applicants should still verify the current requirement on the specific department application page, because Biomedical Engineering and PhD tracks have historically kept a GRE recommendation even where it is not compulsory.
Ques. Can Indian F-1 students work part-time at CCNY during studies?
Ans. F-1 students at CCNY may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and 40 hours per week during vacations without extra permission. Off-campus employment through Curricular Practical Training becomes available after two full semesters of enrolment, and requires programme approval plus an internship linked to the degree curriculum.
Ques. Does CCNY accept Duolingo English Test for Indian applicants?
Ans. Yes, CCNY accepts the Duolingo English Test alongside TOEFL, IELTS Academic and PTE Academic for graduate admission, with a minimum Duolingo score of 100. Grove School engineering programs typically look for stronger evidence at 110 and above, so a TOEFL iBT of 80 or IELTS 7.0 remains the safer route for competitive Computer Science and Data Science tracks.
Ques. What financial documents do Indian applicants submit for the CCNY I-20?
Ans. Indian applicants must submit an affidavit of financial support covering at least one year of estimated total cost, currently around USD 45,000, alongside recent bank statements from the sponsor. Fixed deposits, savings and education-loan sanction letters from scheduled Indian banks are all accepted; CCNY issues the I-20 only after this documentation is reviewed and admission is accepted.
Ques. How long does OPT last for CCNY MS graduates?
Ans. Standard OPT runs for 12 months after graduation for all F-1 CCNY graduates. STEM-designated MS programs, which cover Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, qualify for a 24-month STEM extension, taking the total post-completion work window to 36 months in the United States.
Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise CCNY?
Ans. All major Indian education-loan lenders recognise CCNY for study-abroad financing, including State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, ICICI Bank and Union Bank of India. CCNY appears on the standard listed-university panels of these lenders because it is a state-funded public university within the CUNY system, allowing loans of up to INR 50 lakh on collateral-backed terms.
Ques. Are there dependent visa options for spouses of CCNY students?
Ans. Yes, spouses and unmarried children under 21 of F-1 CCNY students qualify for F-2 dependent visas. F-2 dependents may not work in the United States, and adult F-2 spouses may only enrol in avocational or recreational study; children under 21 can attend K-12 schools full-time. Financial proof for dependents adds around USD 6,000 per person per year to the I-20 sponsor documentation.

Dislikes
- Slow process when you try or when you wait for something, you need a lot of patience
- Hard to get their criteria is very hard. You need a lot of requisites and your CPA or PA need to match their core structure. Otherwise, you have to take additional courses.
- Courses get easily occupy by other student
Campus Life
- The college of various groups of students that you can perform activities. I think our college has more than 150 groups so you can communicate and there will also be gatherings of international students or by the international student services of the college so you can communicate, so you can merge with them. You can talk with them about your culture, so it’s not hard to find any groups and plus there are a lot of things and lots of tourist attraction near your college, so you can visit there and try to relax
Fees
- 945 or 985 per credit cost I need to take 30 credits to complete my graduation degree and for the living expenses, $2000 per month after rounding all the things the cost you will get for one year. It’s more than $45,000. Also, the deposit amount for entertainment is one $150 when you register for the first course or, after enrolling in the university, the one $150 refund refunded. Basically, you estimate the cost for one year is between $40,000 and $50,000.

Likes
- The intensity of the physics and engineering department. Allows for a smaller and close-knit community within the majors. In the chemistry department, the research opportunities are very good and competitive
Dislikes
- I dislike that it is a commuter school and it is very hard to make friends in your classes since most students travel within the city and work so they don’t have the time to socialize.
Overview
I chose this college bcz of the rigor and reputation of the physics department. It’s an above-average experience. I would say it is my dream college experience since I am not forming and getting that “real” college experience.
Campus Life
There are plenty of clubs and extracurricular activities for students to participate in and potentially be apart of a community within the campus.
