Rochester Institute of Technology is a leading global technological institution with its main campus in Rochester, New York. Students from all 50 states and almost 100 different countries choose RIT for their studies in the USA. Originally founded in 1829, RIT acquired its title of a technological institution in 1944. In Fall 2018, Rochester Institute of Technology saw an enrollment of more than 19,000 students for the first time in its 150+ years of history.

Rochester Institute of Technology enrolled 18,897 students with 2,461 international students in Fall 2019. The top five countries in terms of student enrollment include the USA (13,119), India (1,047), China (562), Canada(93) and Saudi Arabia (66).

Programs, Campus, and Housing Facilities

Programs

Rochester Institute of Technology offers 230+ academic programs in a wide range of fields. RIT provides online, continuing education and honors programs. All these degree programs at RIT are offered through 11 colleges.

The National Technical Institute for the Deaf is the first of its kind and supports many deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The various degree programs offered at RIT include:

  • 85 Bachelor’s Degrees in arts, design, engineering, science and mathematics, photography, hospitality, game design, etc.
  • 77 master’s degree programs like MSc, MSc for teachers, MBA, MFA, Masters of Engineering and Master of Architecture
  • 28 Accelerated Dual degree programs allow students to learn both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in less time.
  • 8 Ph.D. programs in astrophysical sciences, color science, computing and information sciences, sustainability, Microsystems engineering, etc.

The largest UG majors with their enrolment at the university for Fall 2019 are Computer Science (984), Game Design and Development (772) and Mechanical Engineering (770).

The top PG programs at RIT include MS in Computer Science(436), MS in Electrical Engineering(154), Master of Engineering Mechanical Engineering(133) and MBA(124).

Campus

Rochester Institute of Technology has 1,300 acres campus located in Henrietta, NY. The New York campus has about 237 buildings which include Apart from its main campus in Henrietta, Rochester, RIT has 5 global campuses located in different corners of the world.

The other 5 campuses include:

  • RIT Dubai
    • this campus was established in the year 2008
    • Located in the United Arab Emirates for students and professionals from the Middle East and parts of Asia
    • The campus offers 10 undergraduate and six graduate programs.
  • RIT Croatia (Dubrovnik)
    • located in the small coastal city
    • provides undergraduate programs in web and mobile computing, international hospitality and service management, along with various minors programs.
  • RIT Croatia (Zagreb)
    • located in the capital city of Croatia
    • Offers a new facility that includes apartment housing, restaurants, fitness center, and coffee shops.
  • RIT Kosovo (Pristina)
    • Programs like liberal arts, information sciences, media, entrepreneurship, and management are offered by the campus
    • The campus attracts students from 20 different countries.
  • RIT China (Weihai) 
    • the campus was established in 2012
    • Established as a partnership between the Saunders College of Business and the Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) School of Economics and Management.
    • The BJTU and RIT offer a joint Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems.

Housing Facilities

Rochester Institute of Technology provides housing facilities to both local and international students accommodating more than 7,000 students in its various residences. Students must submit an enrollment deposit of 3,000 USD to apply for campus housing. Housing rent rates range from 3,000-11,000 USD varying with different types of occupancies.

The various types of residences at RIT, New York are:

  • Residence Halls: Residence Halls mostly houses first-year students. These halls have 1,748 rooms to accommodate approx. 3,579 students.
  • Apartments: There are two apartment complexes with 614 units for 2,098 students. These apartments and townhouses range in size with 1-2 bedrooms.
  • RIT Inn and Conference Center: The RIT Inn accommodates upper-class students. There are 121 rooms for 245 students.
  • Greek Housing: The Greek Housing has six buildings for 108 students. It accommodates six fraternities and sororities.
  • Global Village: The Global Village is the newest residential and commercial complex at RIT for upper-class students. 133 suites are available for 557 students.
  • University Commons: UC Suites has furnished four-bedroom suites with kitchen, living room, 2 bathrooms and laundry.

These accommodations provide students with affordable residences with great amenities and close proximity to the campus. Students can select their own roommates. Utilities like laundry, phone, furniture, media rooms, study rooms, lounges, etc. are all included in the housing rent.

Application Process at Rochester Institute of Technology

Rochester Institute of Technology is a selective university with an acceptance rate of 55%. The university received about 19,335 applications for Fall. 66% were accepted while 22% enrolled at the university.

Application: UG applications can be applied via Common Application or RIT applications while the PG applications are to be made via RIT Application.

Expenses to be incurred at RIT

Studying at RIT is an affordable investment for the student. The university has ranked #41 among National Universities as the “Best Value School” by US News and World Report in 2018.

The undergraduate students who live off-campus have a total cost of attendance equal to 50,910 USD with living expenses of 2,670 USD and personal expenses of 2,350 USD for a year.

International applicants are also required to provide an enrollment fee of 300 USD which needs to be paid once. Also, mandatory health insurance of 1,824 USD is required which is valid for a year.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Rochester Institute of Technology offers a number of financial aid options to both its domestic and international students. About 1,904 international students received 26 million USD in scholarships and Financial Aid support from RIT last year. International students can apply for various international scholarships to support their studies in the USA.

A few of the financial aid options for international students offered at RIT include:

  • Undergraduate Scholarships:
    • UG international students are awarded merit or need-based scholarships only.
    • No full-tuition scholarships are available.
    • Merit-based scholarships are provided only to the highly qualified admitted students at the time of admission.
    • To apply for need-based scholarships, students must complete and submit the College Board International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) to RIT.
  • Graduate Scholarships:
    • Awarded to graduate students by the specific departments
    • Scholarships are offered on the basis of the student’s excellence
    • Amount of the award depends on the student and the department
    • Students must maintain a minimum academic GPA (preferably 3.0)
  • Graduate Assistantship:
    • Awarded to full-time matriculated graduate students
    • Students are required to serve as teaching, research, or administrative assistants
    • The students receive wages in exchange for the work they do.
  • Alternative Education Loan:
    • loans offered by banks to supplement the finances
    • The university is required to certify these education loans
    • Students need to ensure that the loan amount does not exceed the cost of attendance less all other financial aid received
    • Students are encouraged to ensure that they read all the loan terms and conditions very carefully before getting one.

Work-Study

Full-time, matriculated international students at RIT can apply for a part-time on-campus job through RIT Student Employment Office (SEO). Students can work up to 20 hours per week. More than 9,000 campus jobs are available each year.

Students are required to apply for a U.S. Social Security number immediately after being hired. International students on F-1 or J-1 visas to the USA cannot work off-campus without the permission of the International Student Program Coordinator.

Alumni

RIT has over 135,000 alumni from around 100 countries. Some notable alumni of the institution are:

  • Michael Slovis – graduated in the year 1976, he is an American cinematographer and TV director who has worked on various series including Crime Scene Investigation, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.
  • Daniel Carp – graduated in 1973, is the chairman of Board Delta Airlines, former chairman and CEO of Eastman Kodak Company
  • Darshan Hiranandani – graduated in 2003, is the MD of Hiranandani Group of Companies and H-Energy
  • Sean Forbes – graduated in 2008, he is a nationally recognized deaf musician and founder of D-PAN, the Deaf Performing Artists Network.
  • Adam Kubert – graduated in 1981, Kubert is a comic book artist known to work for publishers like Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics and DC comics. He was rated as one of the “hot 10 writers and artists” in the industry in 2008 by Wizard Magazine.
