Requirements at San Jose State University split cleanly into postgraduate and undergraduate tracks. Both tracks share the same application platform. Document lists and English score thresholds differ.
For PG (Master’s) Applicants
- Academic floor: Four-year Bachelor’s degree with 65% or higher; Indian BE, BTech, BArch, and integrated MSc accepted directly
- Three-year Bachelor’s: BSc, BA, and BCom holders need a two-year Master’s or one-year PG diploma to meet the 16-year education norm
- Credential verification: WES or IERF course-by-course evaluation mandatory for Indian transcripts
- Application platform: Cal State Apply portal handles all master’s applications; single fee covers up to four CSU campuses
- English test scores: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 105, PTE Academic 58
- Waiver eligibility: Full four-year Bachelor’s taught in English at an accredited Indian institution qualifies for English test waiver

The Lucas College MBA additionally requires a resume showing two years of full-time work experience. GMAT waivers are granted case-by-case for applicants with strong quantitative backgrounds. An education loan pre-approval letter can substitute for the bank balance certificate in the financial proof documents.
For UG (Bachelor’s) Applicants
- Class 12 floor: 75%+ aggregate in CBSE, ISC, or state board; STEM programmes need PCM combination
- Standardised tests: SAT and ACT optional for international applicants; competitive applicants score 1250+ on SAT

- Application fee: USD 70 (₹6,685), same fee for UG and PG
Note: Indian applicants holding a three-year Bachelor’s have three routes at San Jose State. Complete a Master’s in India first, complete a one-year PG diploma from a UGC-recognised institute, or apply for a Bachelor’s completion pathway. The completion pathway adds one to two years of coursework.
San Jose State University Acceptance Rate 2026
The San Jose State University acceptance rate for international students stands at 78% for the 2025-26 cycle. This figure is officially reported by the university admissions office.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | 78% | Up 3 points |
| 2024-25 | 75% | Up 3 points |
| 2023-24 | 72% | Stable |
The rising trend reflects a larger annual intake target set by California State University trustees. San Jose State does not publish programme-level acceptance rates for international applicants.
MS Computer Science and MS Artificial Intelligence apply higher informal cut-offs at 70% aggregate. Business and social science programmes admit closer to the overall 78% figure.
Reality check: The 78% overall rate is not the same as the CS or AI cohort rate. Indian applicants to MS Computer Science should target 70%+ Bachelor’s aggregate, TOEFL 90+, and a project portfolio to stay competitive. Business and MBA programmes offer more admission flexibility.

[Source: US News, Wall Street Journal, QS, F1 Hire]
The F1 Hire ranking is particularly relevant for Indian applicants because it measures international student post-graduation employment specifically. San Jose State’s placement in the top spot reflects its Silicon Valley proximity.
Key insight: The US News Regional West ranking meets US visa requirements for STEM OPT extensions. The WSJ public university ranking is used by many US employers to filter resumes. Both matter more to Indian applicants than QS World Rankings, which does not list San Jose State.

San Jose State University Placements and Career Outcomes 2026
Silicon Valley proximity gives San Jose State University graduates the highest recruiter density of any Cal State campus. Career outcomes for MS graduates are strong across engineering and business tracks.
- Employment within six months of graduation: 87% for MS graduates (2024-25 outcomes)
- Median MS starting salary: USD 85,000 (₹81.18 lakh)
- Median MS Computer Science starting salary: USD 105,000 (₹1.00 crore)

The alumni network at Cisco, Adobe, and PayPal includes a substantial Indian-origin cohort based in the Bay Area. Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows a 12-month work window post-graduation. STEM-designated programmes qualify for a 24-month OPT extension, giving Indian graduates up to 36 months of US work authorisation.
Insider note: Recruiter access is heavily concentrated in the Fall semester for summer internships. Indian applicants starting in Fall 2027 should begin resume drops and career fair prep in September 2027 itself. Missing the first career fair delays the internship offer cycle by six months.
San Jose State University vs Peer Universities
The comparison set below covers three Cal State system peers plus one private Silicon Valley peer. Tuition, salary, and rank figures are for the 2025-26 or 2026 academic cycle.
| University | US News Rank 2026 | Acceptance Rate | Annual PG Fee | Median MS Salary | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Jose State University | #4 Regional West | 78% | USD 18,490 (₹17.66 lakh) | USD 85,000 (₹81.18 lakh) | Silicon Valley location, F1 Hire #1 |
| San Diego State University | #151 National | 34% | USD 19,050 (₹18.19 lakh) | USD 72,000 (₹68.76 lakh) | Coastal setting, larger research base |
| San Francisco State University | #14 Regional West | 90% | USD 18,020 (₹17.21 lakh) | USD 74,000 (₹70.67 lakh) | Higher admit rate, weaker tech recruiter access |
| Cal Poly Pomona | #3 Regional West | 55% | USD 17,800 (₹17.00 lakh) | USD 78,000 (₹74.49 lakh) | Strong hands-on engineering focus |
| Santa Clara University (Private) | #55 National | 52% | USD 60,000 (₹57.30 lakh) | USD 100,000 (₹95.50 lakh) | Higher salary but 3x tuition |
San Jose State University offers the best cost-to-salary ratio in the peer set. The F1 Hire #1 ranking confirms this on a career outcome basis. Cal Poly Pomona rivals SJSU academically but sits inland and lacks the Silicon Valley recruiter density.
San Jose State University is the correct choice for an Indian applicant seeking a MS Computer Science with a ₹35 lakh total investment, a 78% chance of admission, and direct Silicon Valley recruiter access. The 36-month STEM OPT window converts easily into full-time H-1B pathways at Adobe, Cisco, and PayPal. Median starting salaries near USD 105,000 for MS Computer Science graduates recoup the full two-year cost within nine months of employment.
The Indian-specific advantages are clear. The three-year TOEFL waiver applies to CBSE and ISC school graduates. The F-1 visa interview approval rate for SJSU applicants tracks above the US average. The 300-member Indian Students Association and the Bay Area’s Indian diaspora ease the cultural adjustment in the first semester.
San Jose State University is not the right fit for applicants targeting top-25 US News national rankings or research-focused PhD tracks. UC campuses like UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz offer stronger doctoral pipelines. Applicants with only a three-year Indian Bachelor’s should factor in the additional PG diploma requirement before choosing SJSU.
San Jose State University FAQs

Google, Apple, and Cisco run structured hiring pipelines with the MS Computer Science and MS Software Engineering departments. Median MS Computer Science starting salaries range from USD 95,000 to USD 110,000 for graduates who complete the OPT year at a Bay Area tech firm.
Ques. What is SJSU acceptance rate for internationals?
Ans. San Jose State University reported a 78% acceptance rate for international applicants in the 2025-26 cycle. This is up from 72% in 2023-24. Programme-specific rates vary. MS Computer Science and MS Data Science apply higher informal GPA cut-offs. Business and social science programmes admit closer to the overall figure. Meeting the minimum GPA, English test, and financial proof requirements is the main path to admission.
Ques. Does SJSU accept three-year Indian Bachelor’s?
Ans. A four-year Bachelor’s is the standard requirement for master’s admission at San Jose State University. Indian applicants holding a three-year BSc, BA, or BCom must supplement with a two-year Master’s or a one-year post-graduate diploma. Four-year BE, BTech, BArch, and integrated science degrees meet the four-year minimum without additional coursework. WES evaluation confirms the equivalence at application review.
Ques. Is IELTS mandatory at SJSU?
Ans. IELTS is not the only accepted English test at San Jose State University. TOEFL iBT 80 for PG and 61 for UG works equally well. Duolingo 105 for PG and 95 for UG is accepted. PTE Academic 58 is also valid. Indian applicants whose Bachelor’s degree was taught entirely in English can request a waiver. The waiver decision comes from admissions after transcript review.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at SJSU?
Ans. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic year. Full-time work is allowed during official breaks. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation, typically starting from the second semester. Optional Practical Training grants a 12-month employment window after graduation. STEM-designated programmes qualify for a 24-month OPT extension, giving 36 months of US work rights.
Ques. Is SJSU a public or private university?
Ans. San Jose State University is a public research university. It is a founding campus of the 23-institution California State University system. Public status keeps tuition lower than California’s private research universities like Stanford or Santa Clara. San Jose State does not receive the same federal research funding as UC campuses. It is fully accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission.
Ques. Are SJSU MBA salaries competitive?
Ans. The Lucas College and Graduate School of Business offers a Professional MBA and an on-campus MBA. Median post-MBA salaries for the on-campus programme sit around USD 90,000 (₹85.95 lakh). Silicon Valley employers hire heavily for product management, business development, and analytics roles. The Professional MBA runs part-time and targets mid-career professionals already employed in the Bay Area or Silicon Valley tech firms.
Ques. Does SJSU offer scholarships for Indians?
Ans. San Jose State University offers merit scholarships through individual colleges and departments rather than a central international office. Awards range from USD 1,000 to USD 8,000 per year. The International House residence provides need-based housing grants worth USD 3,000. External bodies like the Inlaks Foundation, JN Tata Endowment, and Fulbright-Nehru also fund SJSU-bound Indian students each admission cycle.

- Faculty here are very welcoming. They make us feel comfortable during the class, so that we can even ask questions without any hesitation. They are very accessible.

- The Infrastructure is good and the campus is well maintained.
- University has access to various lab tools.
Dislikes
- Courses enrollment is a difficult job, you have to be quick or else have to wait till next semester.
- It is little difficult to do any administrative processes.
- There is very less parking spots around university.
Campus Life
- Our university has various departments other than Science and Engineering blocks. There are some departments like music and arts for the respective students. They also have their respective clubs and each of the clubs has its own organisations to operate and conduct the events. For every semester, they conduct various events like welcoming events and fundraising events and also some volunteer organisations come and provide their services, which encourages students during their college times.
- We have a very vast library and have access to all the reference books that are required for our academics and many published articles, which helps students to do their project works and research. As a graduate student in the Electrical Engineering department, I got an opportunity to explore the courses like Digital Design and SystemVerilog-based Verification and also Logic Verification with Unified Verification Methodology (UVM), which is very much helpful for someone like me who is looking for opportunities in Digital Electronics.
- The faculty are very well experienced and also use all their experience in making the students understand the complexities in VLSI design. The labs are also equipped with the most updated and real-life tools from Synopsys and Cadence.
- Our university also encourages the students to excel their skills in co-curricular activities like basketball and Soccer. Unfortunately, I'm not that interested in any sports, so I did not participate in any tournaments but I have been to many events and tournaments at the Spartan Stadium and the Indoor stadium at our college.
- Apart from these activities, we have the Indian Student Organisation and also the International Student Organisation, which conduct the events and also some religious activities for students who are interested in their religious beliefs and who want to celebrate their festivals and could not go back to their families in their home countries.

Likes
- Strong curriculum and practical training
- Hands-on experience and research opportunities
- Faculty is supportive and have industry connection
Dislikes
- Sometimes few of the courses demands too much of writing and documenting.
- For Data Analytics course, students don't have choice to select courses on their own. The curriculum is already planned which every student has to take.
- There are very few part-time jobs available in the campus, which gets filled very quickly because of high demand.
Campus Life
- There is only one campus situated in the downtown area.
- There is a Martin Luther King library, gym and swimming pool that is very large. In addition, there is a building that has a lab; the computers are equipped with NVIDIA GPUs, which you can use to run your heavy models or do assignments.
- There are always some events going on on campus, be it a job fair or a cultural event. Indian students have an ISO group. They celebrate Diwali, Dandiya and Holi every year. You can go and participate in the event.
Fees
- Tuition fees: 26,200 USD
- Living expense: 20,000 USD
- The fees are charged credit-wise and semester-wise. We had to pay for every credit and pay before the start of every semester.
- Rent is around 700-1000 USD
- Transportation would be around 100-120 USD
- Regular expenses would include groceries and utilities, which would be like approximately 1000-1500 USD per month. Plus, it varies from person to person.

- Location - It is located in the heart of silicon valley. There are multiple networking events and opportunities and moreover I have heard from seniors that location has an added benefit while looking for full time job opportunities
- Food Pantry - The university has an active program under which the students can get free groceries (the type and quantity depends on the availability) once a week. This enables me to have basic items such as milk, onions, potatoes, canned food for free.
- Library - I quite like the library and it’s collection. It has 8 floors and first 4 floors are public library while the other floors have quieter seating space for studies and also have dedicated meeting rooms.
Dislikes
- Campus size & part time job availability - The size of campus is quite small in comparison to other universities. This also reduces the available on campus part time job opportunities. The opportunities are too less and the competition is too high with majority students being Indians.
- Curriculum- Talking about my curriculum, it is pretty rigid with no subjects to choose from. Subjects are already chosen for me unlike the education system here in the USA.
- Less student clubs - I think there are lesser student clubs here.
Campus Life
- My university has only one campus. There is library, recreational center, wellness center in the university. There are a lot of festivals happening here and there and many of the Indian festivals are celebrated here.
- There are many clubs including a few of Indian clubs which regularly held events for the students. There are also a lot of student organizations that help students throughout the semester which is also a big help.
Fees
- Fee is charged semester wise. The tuition fee is 8749 for one semester. Other than that there is cost for insurance which is quite high.
- Rent really depends on the property one lives in. But it is around 570-800 dollars per month. For transportation the university provides a clipper card for 3 dollars which lets us travel in bus and light rail for free.

Likes
- Academics and professors are really good
- Location and ease of access to community transportation
- Tuition fees is comparatively less
Dislikes
- Probably not as reputed as other top universities
- Mostly better for undergrads other than grads
- Cost of living is bit high and not a big campus
Campus Life
- I am personally not involved in many of the clubs and other events. I seldom find these interesting but I can see that there are always some or other types of events going on.
- Most of the master's students don't generally focus on these as most of the undergrads are in the clubs. There is a great library that students have access to until midnight so that's a great place to be.

Likes
- Environment as it has nice ambition where we all can study together
- Competition is very high as most of the students dream of this college
- Teaching, processors are well refined in their subjects
Dislikes
- I am not able to take the subjects that i want to take as elective as i m restricted to the provided list,
- Also the prerequisites as i am in engineering managemnet course so i have to complete some prerequisites and before that i can not take BUS elective subjects,
- Also the insurance, we have to buy the insurance from the college only we dont allow with third party
Campus Life
- We have only one campus here; here in the SJSU we have all the facilities, including the gym, swimming pool, and ground for different activities like basketball, volleyball, pickleball, etc.
- There are lots of clubs that organise Indian activities like celebrations of Diwali, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Holi.
- I have been joined in 2 major clubs: one is an Indian student organisation, and the other is Spartan Analytics.
Fees
- My entire course needs 30 credits of subjects without considering pre-requisites
- My master is for 2 years and it cost me around 32k to 34k for my entire coursework.
- In addition to this, we have to pay for health insurance, which costs $800 for fall and $1100 for spring, including summer. And same for the next year.
- My fees can be paid through an education loan or case (not sure if they allot, but I heard of it). Here one subject costs around 3k so by this we can calculate the rest of the fees.
- Monthly expenses are mainly for rent and utilities, which is around 650 per person here in San Jose.

Campus Life
Myrtle events take place here throughout the semester. Starting from Weeks of Welcome to different club events, there is no day we don't have an event.

- I always intended to pursue masters in Data Analytics as I always loved working around the data and make informed decisions. As San Jose city is well known for the field of Data Analytics, I opted to pursue my masters in SJSU as it is well reputed for this program and it is also situated in the silicon valley.
- Culture and diversity. There are many students coming from all over the world to study in this college. So growing network is very much helpful and easy here.
Dislikes
- Class timings. As most of the professors are working professionals, they take up the class once they finish their work. Like around we will be having class at 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. I personally did not like this as I am a morning person.
Overview
SJSU is pretty good. They offer some well structured curicullum and the faculties here are well experienced. Learning wise this college is exceptional, but for jobs we need to apply outside as there is no placements and companies coming to college. Most of the universities here does not provide campus placements like India. Each student should approach to the company employers and apply.
Campus Life
SJSU has some well formed clubs and groups and host events regularly . SJSU has all the facilities like gym, cafes, pool. auditorium, libraries, free wifi etc required for the students to reach their goals.
