  • English test: Same TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo minimums as graduate applicants apply for Full Status admission
  • Standardised tests: SAT or ACT is optional through 2027; strong scores strengthen scholarship consideration

Note: Applicants short of Full Status may still be admitted under Limited Status with TOEFL iBT 4.0 (new scale) or 79 (legacy), and must complete UIUC English proficiency coursework in their first semester before advancing.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Acceptance Rate 2027

UIUC’s overall acceptance rate is 36.6% (estimated) based on the most recent admissions cycle data, making it a moderately selective public research university. The university does not publish a separate official acceptance rate for international applicants each year.

Programme selectivity varies sharply across colleges. Siebel School CS and Grainger Engineering admit far fewer applicants than the university average. Liberal arts and social sciences run at higher acceptance rates.

Reality check: Indian applicants targeting MS Computer Science at UIUC face effective admit rates in single digits. A CGPA above 8.0/10, TOEFL 103+ or IELTS 7.5, plus 2 to 3 quality research or internship experiences are near-essential for a competitive shortlist.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UIUC graduates land roles at leading US technology, consulting and financial services firms. On-campus recruiting runs through Grainger, Gies and college-specific Career Development Offices each semester.

  • Placement rate: As per the UIUC Grainger 2024 outcomes report, 94% of undergraduates are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation
  • Median starting salary (MS STEM): $95,000 to $130,000 per year (₹91.1 to 124.7 lakh); market median for UIUC CS and ECE graduates in US tech
  • Top sectors and recruiters: Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, NVIDIA, Apple, Boeing, JPMorgan Chase, Deloitte, McKinsey and Caterpillar recruit on campus each year
  • Career support: Dedicated Career Development Office (CDO) in every college, VMock resume tools, semester career fairs and STEM OPT plus H-1B legal briefings for international students
  • iMBA outcomes: Post-MBA median salary of $115,000 (₹110.3 lakh) as per Gies Employment Report 2024

Insider note: Indian MS graduates from Siebel CS commonly place into new-grad software engineering roles at $130,000 to $180,000 total compensation in the Bay Area. The 24-month STEM OPT extension gives runway to secure H-1B sponsorship over two lottery cycles.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Peer Universities

UIUC competes with other US research universities strong in engineering and computing. Purdue University, UT Austin, Michigan Ann Arbor and Carnegie Mellon sit on the shortlist of most Indian STEM applicants.

UIUC edges peer US public universities on cost of living. Its Grainger and Siebel schools sit above Purdue and UT Austin in most global Computer Science subject rankings for 2026. The trade-off is a smaller city than Ann Arbor, Pittsburgh or Austin for internship access during term.

UIUC suits Indian STEM applicants wanting a top world-ranked US public research university. A two-year investment of ₹95 to 125 lakh is offset by median STEM salaries of $95,000 to $130,000. Grainger Engineering and Siebel Computing carry direct weight with US recruiters and Indian consulate visa officers alike. MS Computer Science, MEng ECE and MS Financial Engineering are the standout Indian-applicant fits.

UIUC is less suited for applicants wanting a large-city campus or a smaller two-year budget. For those aspirants, MBA universities in USA such as Indiana Kelley or Michigan State offer stronger city adjacency at similar QS tiers.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign FAQs

Ques. How long does STEM OPT last for UIUC F-1 graduates in the USA?

Ans. UIUC MS Computer Science, MEng ECE, MS Aerospace and MS Business Analytics all qualify as DHS-designated STEM degrees. Indian F-1 graduates first receive 12 months of Optional Practical Training. A 24-month STEM OPT extension can then be added on top. Total US work authorisation reaches 36 months, giving graduates two H-1B lottery cycles before sponsorship becomes essential.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on campus at UIUC?

Ans. F-1 visa holders may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during term. Full-time work is allowed during official semester breaks. Popular UIUC on-campus roles include the ARC recreation centre, library front desk and departmental research assistantships. Hourly pay typically ranges from $12 to $17 per hour. Off-campus work is restricted to Curricular Practical Training or OPT.

Ques. Which Indian banks provide education loans for University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign studies?

Ans. Most Indian nationalised and private banks fund UIUC studies. SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI, Axis and Bank of Baroda sanction education loans of ₹40 lakh to ₹1.5 crore. Non-banking lenders such as Prodigy Finance, MPOWER Financing and Leap Finance offer no-collateral USD loans up to $100,000. INR loan rates in 2026 sit between 9.5% and 12.5% per annum. USD loans price at SOFR plus 4% to 6%.

Ques. What application fee does the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign charge Indian applicants for 2027?

Ans. The UIUC Graduate College charges a $90 application fee for international applicants for Fall 2027. It is non-refundable and payable by credit card at submission. Undergraduate international applicants pay $75. Fee waivers are extremely limited and rarely granted to overseas applicants, so plan for the fee up-front. The application fee is separate from any credential evaluation or English test costs.

Ques. Is GRE mandatory for MS Computer Science admission at UIUC?

Ans. GRE is not required for the professional Master of Computer Science (MCS) at UIUC’s Siebel School since 2019. However, the research-track MS Computer Science and PhD both recommend GRE scores for stronger applications. MS Financial Engineering at Gies requires GRE or GMAT with competitive quant scores. Most other Grainger Engineering MS programmes have made GRE optional or waived since 2021.

Ques. Does the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign accept Duolingo English Test scores from Indian applicants?

Ans. Yes, UIUC accepts the Duolingo English Test for both undergraduate and graduate admissions. The Full Status admission cut-off is 135 and Limited Status is 115. Indian applicants who cannot sit TOEFL or IELTS in time may submit a Duolingo score instead. Some departments still prefer TOEFL for fully-funded assistantship consideration. The Duolingo score is valid for two years from the test date.

Ques. What credential evaluation is needed for Indian degrees at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign?

Ans. The UIUC Graduate College accepts official transcripts directly from the Indian university at application. Some departments request additional evaluation from WES or ECE for CGPA to GPA conversion. After admission, the student mails original transcripts and degree certificates for I-20 issuance. A four-year Indian bachelor’s is accepted for direct MS admission; three-year degrees may need a bridge programme.

Ques. Which Indian cities have the largest UIUC alumni base for networking?

Ans. The Illinois Alumni Association India Chapter is most active in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi NCR. This mirrors where UIUC MS Computer Science and Grainger Engineering alumni cluster after H-1B sponsorship. Regular meetups, referral drives and admissions info sessions run in these four cities year-round. Chennai and Pune host smaller but fast-growing chapters through the Indian Student Association network.

Campus Life

  • UIUC has just 1 main campus. The U of I system has two more campuses in Springfield, IL, and Chicago, IL.
  • All facilities are available. Many many libraries, 2 rec centres with pools, gyms, courts, tracks etc. Many outdoor fields, courts in a couple different locations as well.
  • There are hundreds of student run clubs, called RSOs, for every interest one may have. They are both academic and social. Spring Jam, Mom's weekend, Dad's weekend, Open Houses etc are annual events. Our sports teams are also competitive and fun to watch in the Big10 conferences.
  • Our Basketball teams perform in the NCAA march madness almost every year. Otherwise, via the various RSOs, there are opportunities to play any sport you want.

Fees

  • Fees - USD 17,000 per semester (including tuition, health service fee, insurance, MTD transport fee etc.)
  • The Fees is charged per semester, but is also credit based (although it is the same above 12 credits, which you need to register for anyway)
  • Rent - USD 840 per month (including all utilities like electricity, internet, trash, gas, water) - can get cheaper or more expensive based on location, and number of beds in the apt. I live in a studio in the best location smack bang in the middle of the campus, close to all my classes)
  • Transportation by bus is free for students, and you can get anywhere within the town by the buses (included in the fee you pay)

  • My college has 3 campuses in total. One in Urbana-Champaign, one is chicago and another in Springfield. All these campuses are in Illinois.
  • There are numerous facilities present at UIUC. They have around 700 buildings which have numerous libraries, sports facilities and a dedicated hospital and medical facility.
  • The main campus festivals are like the Diwali celebration as well as the Holi celebration. They also have an excellent independence day celebration.
  • There are a lot of cultural events as listed above and extracurricular activities include playing sports on the fields, intramural activities and also around 800 student organizations that range from Indian Association to Latin RSO.

Fees

  • The breakdown of the fees is approximately 20k USD for tuition + 6-7k USD for hostel + food for each semester. There are no other charges. Any miscellaneous charges get added to your tuition. The per semester tuition is approximately 30k USD.
  • The feed is charged semester-wise at UIUC. However, if you exceed a certain number of credits per semester then it also increases.
  • There is no expense on transportation and rent for the first year. However, if you choose to live in an apartment, then the rent is approximately 900 USD per month per person for a good apartment and regular expenses include groceries which come up to 500-600 USD a month when living in an apartment. There is no need for groceries when living in a dorm.

Overview

It is a tedious task. Had to compare a lot of colleges. Checked college ratings, their syllabus, cost, tuition fees etc. It required lots of hours to commit in order to shortlist and finalize a university.

Campus Life

University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign is know as a party school and there are lots of party clubs as well as student clubs. You have plenty of opportunities to have a good grad school life. I found a lot of indians in the university. THe infrastructure is quite modern and has new and updated technologies.

Overview

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a prestigious school. It is renowned for academic excellence, especially in my field, that is computer science and data analytics. The MSIM program that I had taken was a perfect blend of technology and management, which aligned with my career aspirations.

Campus Life

I was not a part of any of the clubs but I do know that there are many for the people who are interested in it. There are a lot of celebrations for different festivals though.

I had to submit SOP and 3 LORs along with my CV. I highlighted my academic background and work experience in the SOP. University ranking, fully funded program and a good research group My overall experience at UIUC was excellent. I joined for a masters program and decided to continue with the PhD. I had an excellent advisor and research group. I learned a lot and made good connections. The overall campus life has something for everyone.

Overview

My college experience so far has been very rewarding because I have grown tremendously as a person and as a learner. Been able to learn to adapt to new circumstances and adjust to variations to normal life and adversity. Been able to control mood swings from excitement to disappointment. Also formed great relationships with amazing people around me.

Campus Life

The campus life is very robust and happening at first but it slows down since there isn’t much to do in Champaign since it’s a college town. But there are very well maintained facilities for learning, training and studying with state of the art libraries, academic instructional facilities, gyms and research labs. The Wi-Fi on campus is also very fast, never a problem.

It is going great, I’m still adjusting to the classes but honestly I feel behind in all of them. I need to gain a better understanding on all my courses, but other than that this university is so good. You have so many opportunities at your fingertips and you won’t get a better education than here.

Campus Life

The campus life was very difficult to adjust to but I do love being able to roam around and explore the campus. I haven’t joined any clubs mostly because I have a busy schedule and looking for a job. The libraries here are amazing and the gyms are too.

Ques. Should I choose USC, UIUC, or Syracuse University for my undergraduate study of architecture?

● Top Answer By Ravina Kumar on 13 Jan 21

Ans. The University of Southern California (USC) is a private university located in Los Angeles, California. The University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign (UIUC) is a public university located in the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign. The QS World University Rankings by subject 2020 – Architecture/Build Environment is given below – University of Southern California (USC) - #51 - 100 University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign (UIUC) - #50 Syracuse University - #101 – 150 The rankings tell you one thing and the experience of the students another. The reputation and the number of graduates from the USC School of Architecture and Syracuse University School of Architecture are far more than the graduates from the Illinois School of Architecture – UIUC. All these programs are quite close in terms of rankings as well. So academically you cannot go wrong with any of these three schools. Yet USC and Syracuse University still hold a little edge. Your choice should also depend upon the area you want to settle down after graduating. USC is located on the west coast, UIUC in the midwest and Syracuse University on the east coast. If you want to work in New York, choose Syracuse University. If you want to work in California or Los Angeles, choose USC. It is not that they are not known nationally, but most of the hiring managers, some of whom may be alumni, are located in companies closer to the university itself, thus a better chance of getting employed in that region. Also some may prefer the quiet regions of upstate New York or Illinois while some may marvel at the architectural designs in and around the city of Los Angeles. This is strictly a personal choice . Also factor in the huge and ever growing alumni network of USC, which makes it a compelling choice. If you combine all these factors, then University of Southern California (USC) emerges as a clear winner among the three for studying architecture.Read more
