UIUC edges peer US public universities on cost of living. Its Grainger and Siebel schools sit above Purdue and UT Austin in most global Computer Science subject rankings for 2026. The trade-off is a smaller city than Ann Arbor, Pittsburgh or Austin for internship access during term.
UIUC suits Indian STEM applicants wanting a top world-ranked US public research university. A two-year investment of ₹95 to 125 lakh is offset by median STEM salaries of $95,000 to $130,000. Grainger Engineering and Siebel Computing carry direct weight with US recruiters and Indian consulate visa officers alike. MS Computer Science, MEng ECE and MS Financial Engineering are the standout Indian-applicant fits.
UIUC is less suited for applicants wanting a large-city campus or a smaller two-year budget. For those aspirants, MBA universities in USA such as Indiana Kelley or Michigan State offer stronger city adjacency at similar QS tiers.

The Duolingo score is valid for two years from the test date.
Ques. What credential evaluation is needed for Indian degrees at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign?
Ans. The UIUC Graduate College accepts official transcripts directly from the Indian university at application. Some departments request additional evaluation from WES or ECE for CGPA to GPA conversion. After admission, the student mails original transcripts and degree certificates for I-20 issuance. A four-year Indian bachelor’s is accepted for direct MS admission; three-year degrees may need a bridge programme.
Ques. Which Indian cities have the largest UIUC alumni base for networking?
Ans. The Illinois Alumni Association India Chapter is most active in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi NCR. This mirrors where UIUC MS Computer Science and Grainger Engineering alumni cluster after H-1B sponsorship. Regular meetups, referral drives and admissions info sessions run in these four cities year-round. - Excellent programs, especially for STEM
- Beautiful campus, with many old buildings, and many libraries. Great public transport bus system.
- I love the weather! Even though it can get a bit cold in the winters, I don't mind it
Dislikes
- The CU area is small. It is a small town in the middle of cornfields, so not a lot happens outside of the campus areas for students.
- Socializing, especially as a grad student in one of the smaller majors is not the easiest
- Traveling to any other part of the US can be a bit annoying, as you would need to catch flights out of Chicago which is a 2.5 hrs road journey away
Campus Life
- UIUC has just 1 main campus. The U of I system has two more campuses in Springfield, IL, and Chicago, IL.
- All facilities are available. Many many libraries, 2 rec centres with pools, gyms, courts, tracks etc. Many outdoor fields, courts in a couple different locations as well.
- There are hundreds of student run clubs, called RSOs, for every interest one may have. They are both academic and social. Spring Jam, Mom's weekend, Dad's weekend, Open Houses etc are annual events. Our sports teams are also competitive and fun to watch in the Big10 conferences.
- Our Basketball teams perform in the NCAA march madness almost every year. Otherwise, via the various RSOs, there are opportunities to play any sport you want.
Fees
- Fees - USD 17,000 per semester (including tuition, health service fee, insurance, MTD transport fee etc.)
- The Fees is charged per semester, but is also credit based (although it is the same above 12 credits, which you need to register for anyway)
- Rent - USD 840 per month (including all utilities like electricity, internet, trash, gas, water) - can get cheaper or more expensive based on location, and number of beds in the apt. I live in a studio in the best location smack bang in the middle of the campus, close to all my classes)
- Transportation by bus is free for students, and you can get anywhere within the town by the buses (included in the fee you pay)

- One of the most important things about the college experience is the ability to have good experiences. This is an integral reason to pursue a degree abroad. At UIUC, there are numerous places where you can go in your free time and enjoy. UIUC is a prominent party college and the parties there live up to their reputation. There are also numerous activities on campus that one can do, like bowling, play all kinds of sports and take a stroll in the beautiful gardens.
- The academics are great. The teachers are extremely helpful and will give you extra attention if you need. The office hours are critical in revising certain difficult concepts. The professors are willing to put in extra efforts for individual students as well and questions are answered in class as well as after.
- The people are especially warm to everyone and there is not even a hint of racism. The community is very progressive and accepting of people from all walks of life.
Dislikes
- There is a lot of use of substances across campus, drugs and alcohol are prevalent so that is something to be aware about. People are also doing this in the open so it is helpful to be careful.
- The academics might be incredibly good but you also need to put efforts because it is equally difficult. The level of the students is extremely high and it is critical that you do not leave anything for the last minute. The grading is also extremely difficult.
- The food is great but it is quite expensive so it is good to keep a check on your spending. The dining hall is fine but not all too great. Additionally, there are minimal choices for people that are vegetarian.
Campus Life
- My college has 3 campuses in total. One in Urbana-Champaign, one is chicago and another in Springfield. All these campuses are in Illinois.
- There are numerous facilities present at UIUC. They have around 700 buildings which have numerous libraries, sports facilities and a dedicated hospital and medical facility.
- The main campus festivals are like the Diwali celebration as well as the Holi celebration. They also have an excellent independence day celebration.
- There are a lot of cultural events as listed above and extracurricular activities include playing sports on the fields, intramural activities and also around 800 student organizations that range from Indian Association to Latin RSO.
Fees
- The breakdown of the fees is approximately 20k USD for tuition + 6-7k USD for hostel + food for each semester. There are no other charges. Any miscellaneous charges get added to your tuition. The per semester tuition is approximately 30k USD.
- The feed is charged semester-wise at UIUC. However, if you exceed a certain number of credits per semester then it also increases.
- There is no expense on transportation and rent for the first year. However, if you choose to live in an apartment, then the rent is approximately 900 USD per month per person for a good apartment and regular expenses include groceries which come up to 500-600 USD a month when living in an apartment. There is no need for groceries when living in a dorm.

- A very big course, plenty of opportunities to do part time. Hundreds of professors, thousands of positions and a lot of scores for assistantships.
- A good campus, cheap housing, lots to do. Reputed university.
- Good reputation, helpful people, good student community
Dislikes
- It is too cold and weather becomes extreme
- It becomes a ghost town during breaks like winter.
- Commute is from the airport. Chicago is 3 hours away
Overview
It is a tedious task. Had to compare a lot of colleges. Checked college ratings, their syllabus, cost, tuition fees etc. It required lots of hours to commit in order to shortlist and finalize a university.
Campus Life
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign is know as a party school and there are lots of party clubs as well as student clubs. You have plenty of opportunities to have a good grad school life. I found a lot of indians in the university. THe infrastructure is quite modern and has new and updated technologies.

- Campus: The school is a home to many students. It has a really huge and beautiful campus with loads of fun things to do around, amazing restaurants, great places to hang around, and a huge library!
- Academics: The professors in my program are really knowledgeable and helpful. I really enjoyed the lectures!
- Course Curriculum: There were 3 compulsory courses out of 10. This gave me a leverage to take up any of the courses that aligned with my interests.
Dislikes
- Class size: There were around 90 students due to which sometimes the seats got full to a particular class of a particular professor too quickly and I had to take that course next semester.
Overview
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a prestigious school. It is renowned for academic excellence, especially in my field, that is computer science and data analytics. The MSIM program that I had taken was a perfect blend of technology and management, which aligned with my career aspirations.
Campus Life
I was not a part of any of the clubs but I do know that there are many for the people who are interested in it. There are a lot of celebrations for different festivals though.
Overview
No interview I had to submit an essay saying why I wanted to join It was a fun party school and it was also good for studying I really loved it. It was really fun I made a lot of friends and my major was not particularly hard so really happy about that.

- UIUC has excellent research faculty and ample opportunities for someone to get the taste of academic research while keeping up to date with industry requirements.
Dislikes
- Weather can be a bit poor especially during the winter season. The campus is a bit out of nowhere, so not a great place for people looking for a busy city life.
Overview
I had to submit SOP and 3 LORs along with my CV. I highlighted my academic background and work experience in the SOP. University ranking, fully funded program and a good research group My overall experience at UIUC was excellent. I joined for a masters program and decided to continue with the PhD. I had an excellent advisor and research group. I learned a lot and made good connections. The overall campus life has something for everyone.

Campus life is happening. Library and research facilities are top class.

- Reputation of the university and access to a major city. College town with multiple sports teams, bars and accessible/affordable housing
Overview
My college experience so far has been very rewarding because I have grown tremendously as a person and as a learner. Been able to learn to adapt to new circumstances and adjust to variations to normal life and adversity. Been able to control mood swings from excitement to disappointment. Also formed great relationships with amazing people around me.
Campus Life
The campus life is very robust and happening at first but it slows down since there isn’t much to do in Champaign since it’s a college town. But there are very well maintained facilities for learning, training and studying with state of the art libraries, academic instructional facilities, gyms and research labs. The Wi-Fi on campus is also very fast, never a problem.

- I wanted a change that would make me become more mature and independent. This school was far from my house but not that far in the case I wanted to visit
Overview
It is going great, I’m still adjusting to the classes but honestly I feel behind in all of them. I need to gain a better understanding on all my courses, but other than that this university is so good. You have so many opportunities at your fingertips and you won’t get a better education than here.
Campus Life
The campus life was very difficult to adjust to but I do love being able to roam around and explore the campus. I haven’t joined any clubs mostly because I have a busy schedule and looking for a job. The libraries here are amazing and the gyms are too.
