University of Kerala, MG University and University of Calicut are Kerala's most compared PG options. All three fill affiliated college PG seats through centralised allotment. Selection runs on index marks, not a common entrance exam.
The three split sharply on outcomes. MG University reported a median PG salary of INR 5.50 Lakh. Kerala reported INR 3.48 Lakh and Calicut INR 3.00 Lakh.
Cost is the other split. The PG application fee is INR. 520 at Calicut, INR. 1,000 at Kerala and INR. 1,300 at MG University. All three 2026-27 cycles are still at the allotment stage.

Rankings and Accreditation Compared
Kerala leads on national rankings. MG University leads on the global ones. Calicut sits behind both on every published measure.
| Ranking or Grade | University of Kerala | MG University | University of Calicut |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIRF 2025 University category | 25 | 43 | 101-150 band |
| NIRF 2025 State Public University | 5 | 17 | 38 |
| NIRF 2025 State Public University score | 67.93 | 61.97 | 53.19 |
| NAAC grade and CGPA | A++, 3.67 | A++, 3.61 | A+, 3.45 |
MG University got UGC Category-I graded autonomy first in Kerala. The UGC cleared it in March 2025. It sits in the 501-600 band of the THE World University Rankings 2026.
University of Kerala sits in the 1201-1500 band of the same list. Its NAAC A++ grade with CGPA 3.67 runs to June 2027. Calicut holds A+ with CGPA 3.45 from its 2022 fourth cycle.
PG Selection Rules and Index Mark Compared
Most affiliated college PG seats need no entrance test. The rank list is built from an index mark on degree marks. The small rule differences decide many borderline cases.
- Calicut adds 5 percent of the selection index as grace points. This applies only to its own degree holders. An outside graduate starts behind on the same marks.
- MG University instead charges other-university graduates a matriculation fee of INR. 330. Repeat attempts are also penalised differently. MG University deducts 5 marks for each extra appearance.
- University of Kerala deducts 10 marks per extra attempt. Calicut deducts 10 marks too, capped at 25. So a student with backlogs loses least at MG University.
- Option limits differ as well. Kerala allows up to 20 options in one application. Calicut allows up to 15 programmes.
- NSS and NCC certificate holders get 5 bonus marks at all three. Only one of the two can be claimed. Calicut also gives NCC A, B and C holders 3, 5 and 10 extra marks.
Example: A B.Com graduate of a Calicut college scores 78 percent. That candidate gets the 5 percent index grace at Calicut only. So Calicut colleges are the safer first block of options.
Admission to the University Departments
Seats in the university's own departments follow a different route. MG University runs CAT-MGU, an online entrance test. It has 60 MCQs in 90 minutes with no negative marking.
CAT-MGU costs INR. 1,250 for one programme. Each extra programme costs INR. 250, up to four. MG University also reserves seats for a CUET PG rank list.
Kerala fills its teaching department seats through the PG-CSS entrance route. Calicut uses CUCAT for programmes such as MSW, LLM, MCA and M.P.Ed.
PG Fees Compared
Calicut is the cheapest to apply to and the cheapest to confirm. The gap is small in rupee terms. It still shows up across three applications.
| Fee Head | University of Kerala | MG University | University of Calicut |
|---|---|---|---|
| PG application fee, General | INR. 1,000 | INR. 1,300 | INR. 520 |
| PG application fee, SC/ST | INR. 550 | INR. 650 | INR. 220 |
| University fee at admission | INR. 1,430 | INR. 1,595 | INR. 610 |
Course fees matter far more than these heads. In MG University aided colleges, PG tuition is INR. 1,890 a year. First year college fees there total about INR. 4,380.
That total includes a refundable caution deposit of INR. 600. Calicut charges INR. 2,415 a year in its own teaching departments. Self-financing seats cost far more at both.
MG University self-financing PG costs INR. 21,000 to INR. 47,040 per semester. At Calicut, MCA costs INR. 26,745 per semester and LLM INR. 40,115. MSW is lower at INR. 16,050 per semester.
PG Placements Compared
This is the clearest gap of the three. The figures below come from the NIRF 2025 submissions. They cover PG two-year programmes of the 2023-24 batch.
| PG 2-Year, 2023-24 Batch | University of Kerala | MG University | University of Calicut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Students graduated | 1,434 | 565 | 912 |
| Students placed | 804 | 455 | 271 |
| Median salary | INR 3.48 Lakh | INR 5.50 Lakh | INR 3.00 Lakh |
| Selected for higher studies | 630 | 60 | 551 |
MG University placed 455 of 565 PG students, about 80 percent. Kerala University placed 804 of 1,434, roughly 56 percent. Calicut placed 271 of 912, under 30 percent.
The higher studies column tells the other half of the story. At Calicut, 551 of that batch moved to further study. At Kerala the number was 630.

| Parameter, NIRF 2025 | University of Kerala | MG University | University of Calicut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Faculty members | 306 | 220 | 201 |
| Full-time PhD scholars | 1,462 | 506 | 741 |

| PG 2-year sanctioned intake | 1,440 | 874 | 1,089 |

Note: Placement Rate = (Students Placed ÷ Students Graduated) × 100
Kerala awarded 596 full-time PhDs in 2023-24. That is more than MG University and Calicut put together. That pipeline matters for a student planning a doctorate.
Campus Location and Regional Reach
Each university serves a different set of districts. That decides travel, hostel need and the colleges on offer.
University of Kerala covers the southern districts from Thiruvananthapuram. MG University covers central Kerala from Kottayam. It sits closest to the Kochi job market.
MG University claims the largest affiliated college network in the state. Calicut spreads across Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad and Wayanad.
What Students Say About PG Study at Each University
Official pages skip what decides daily life on campus. The themes below recur across student accounts and reviews.
Hostel Access Is Not Automatic
University of Kerala runs six hostels. Kariavattom hostel admission is restricted to university department students. PG students in affiliated colleges arrange their own stay.
At Calicut, students report a shortage of hostel seats, especially for men. Many describe renting rooms or paying guest accommodation nearby. Food quality in the mess is a recurring complaint.
MG University students describe six hostels with mess facilities. They report a monthly cost near INR. 1,900 including food. Views on the mess food are mixed there too.
Placement Support Depends on the College
The placement figures above cover university departments only. Students in affiliated arts and science colleges report far less recruitment. Many describe arranging jobs on their own after the degree.
Students consistently rate management and computing departments higher on recruiter visits. Language and pure science departments see fewer companies at all three.
Certificate and Equivalency Delays
Students report long waits for degree and equivalency certificates. Those documents are needed for further admission and for jobs. It is the most repeated complaint about all three universities.
Which Is Better for PG?
There is no single winner. The right pick depends on what the student wants.
- MG University is the stronger choice for a job after PG. It reported the highest median at INR 5.50 Lakh. Its placement share is also the highest of the three.
- University of Kerala is the stronger choice for a research track. It has 306 faculty members and 1,462 full-time PhD scholars. It also holds the best state public university rank at 5.
- Calicut is the cheapest and widest entry point in north Kerala. Its own graduates also get a 5 percent index grace. But it is the weakest of the three on placements.
Example: A Kozhikode student wants an M.Sc and then a PhD. Calicut works there on cost and access. A student aiming at a corporate job should rank MG University higher.
