To be eligible for TNEA 2027, you must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, scoring at least 45% in these three subjects combined if you belong to the OC category, 40% for BC/BCM/MBC/DNC categories, and only pass marks for SC and ST students — with no age limit applicable to any category.

TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) is the state-level counselling process conducted by Anna University for admission to BE/B.Tech programmes across Tamil Nadu. Your eligibility is determined entirely by your Class 12 PCM marks and community category. Knowing the exact minimum percentage for your category helps you plan your preparation and avoids rejection at the document verification stage.

  • No age limit is prescribed for TNEA 2027 — students of any age may apply.
  • Minimum qualifying marks: 45% PCM aggregate for OC, 40% for BC/BCM/MBC/DNC, and pass marks for SC/SCA/ST.
  • Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are compulsory and separate subjects in your Class 12 mark sheet.
  • TNEA rank is calculated out of 200, with Mathematics carrying double weightage over Physics and Chemistry.
  • Tamil Nadu domicile is required to compete for the 69% state reservation seats; other-state students may apply for the remaining 31%.

TNEA 2027 Eligibility at a Glance

The table below summarises all key eligibility conditions for TNEA 2027 in one place.

Parameter Requirement
Qualifying Examination Class 12 or equivalent
Compulsory Subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (separate papers)
Minimum PCM % — OC 45%
Minimum PCM % — BC / BCM 40%
Minimum PCM % — MBC / DNC 40%
Minimum PCM % — SC / SCA / ST Pass marks only
Age Limit None
Nationality Indian
Domicile (State Quota) Tamil Nadu nativity required for 69% reservation seats

Educational Qualification

You must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination recognised by the Tamil Nadu government. Students awaiting their 2027 results are permitted to apply provisionally, subject to meeting all criteria at document verification.

Recognised boards include Tamil Nadu HSC (State Board), CBSE, ICSE and equivalent state boards from across India. Students from open schooling boards may apply if their board holds recognition from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Diplomas and ITI certificates do not qualify in place of a 10+2 pass for TNEA purposes.

Category-Wise Qualifying Percentage

The minimum percentage is calculated only on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combined — the overall 12th percentage across all subjects is not used for the eligibility check. The table below lists the cut-off for every community recognised under TNEA.

Category Minimum PCM Aggregate
OC — Open Category (General) 45%
BC — Backward Class 40%
BCM — Backward Class Muslim 40%
MBC — Most Backward Class 40%
DNC — Denotified Communities 40%
SC — Scheduled Caste Pass marks only
SCA — Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar Pass marks only
ST — Scheduled Tribe Pass marks only

To illustrate: if you scored 82 in Physics, 78 in Chemistry and 90 in Mathematics, your PCM aggregate is (82+78+90)/3 = 83.3%. This comfortably meets the 45% threshold for OC students. If your PCM aggregate is exactly 44%, you fall short for OC but remain eligible for BC/BCM/MBC/DNC categories. SC and ST students have no minimum percentage barrier — passing each subject individually is sufficient.

Compulsory Subject Requirements

Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics must each appear as separate, distinct subjects in your Class 12 mark sheet. Bundled or combined science papers do not fulfil this requirement.

  • Students in the Biology stream are not eligible unless they studied Mathematics as an additional subject and the mark sheet shows it as a separate entry.
  • For B.Arch admission through TNEA, Mathematics is mandatory in Class 12 alongside a valid NATA score — other TNEA branches do not require NATA.
  • Vocational stream students may apply only if Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics were studied as academic subjects in addition to their vocational paper.
  • Students who appeared in a compartment or supplementary exam must have passed all three PCM subjects before the TNEA counselling rounds begin.

Age Limit and Domicile Rules

TNEA 2027 imposes no age restriction. Whether you are appearing straight after Class 12 or re-applying years later, your age does not affect eligibility. The only criteria that matter are your Class 12 PCM marks and community category.

Domicile eligibility determines which pool of seats you compete in:

  • 69% reservation seats — available only to students who are residents of Tamil Nadu, established through a nativity certificate or a study certificate showing schooling in Tamil Nadu for a minimum of three consecutive years.
  • 31% non-reservation (open merit) seats — open to students from any Indian state competing purely on TNEA score merit, without any domicile condition.

Students from other states should apply under the non-reservation category and carry their respective state board mark sheets for verification. NRI and foreign national applicants follow a separate management quota process outside the regular TNEA counselling.

How TNEA Rank Is Calculated

Your TNEA rank is based entirely on your Class 12 PCM marks, with Mathematics receiving full weight and Physics and Chemistry each receiving half weight. The maximum TNEA score is 200.

Subject (Max 100 in Class 12) Calculation Max Points in TNEA Score
Mathematics Full marks (÷ 1) 100
Physics Half marks (÷ 2) 50
Chemistry Half marks (÷ 2) 50
Total TNEA Score — 200

Example: A student who scored 96 in Mathematics, 90 in Physics and 88 in Chemistry gets a TNEA score of 96 + 45 + 44 = 185 out of 200. Since Mathematics contributes half of the total TNEA score, a strong performance in Mathematics can significantly improve your rank even if Physics or Chemistry scores are moderate. Focus on maximising your Mathematics marks for the best TNEA rank.

TNEA 2027 Eligibility Criteria FAQs

Ques. What is the minimum percentage required for TNEA 2027 for OC category students?

Ans. OC category students need a minimum of 45% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combined in Class 12 to be eligible for TNEA 2027.

Ques. Is there any age limit for TNEA 2027?

Ans. No. TNEA 2027 has no minimum or maximum age limit. Any student who has passed Class 12 with the required subjects and minimum marks can participate in counselling regardless of age.

Ques. Can students from other states apply for TNEA 2027?

Ans. Yes. Students from outside Tamil Nadu can apply under the non-reservation category (31% of seats), where allotment is purely merit-based with no domicile restriction.

Ques. Are Biology stream students eligible for TNEA 2027?

Ans. Biology stream students are not eligible unless Mathematics also appears as a separate subject in their Class 12 mark sheet and they meet the applicable minimum PCM percentage for their category.

Ques. How is the TNEA rank calculated?

Ans. TNEA rank is calculated out of 200: full Mathematics score + half of Physics score + half of Chemistry score. This gives Mathematics twice the weightage of Physics or Chemistry individually.

Ques. What is the eligibility for SC and ST students in TNEA 2027?

Ans. SC, SCA and ST students need only pass marks in their Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — there is no minimum percentage requirement for these categories.
