M.Phil. Mathematics or Master of Philosophy in Mathematics is a postgraduate research course in mathematics. Though a mirror equivalent of Ph.D., this course is different from it in some aspects. Many colleges offer this course in an integrated form with Ph.D. also. The course duration is generally 2 years but can be more if distance education is pursued. When the M.Phil-Ph.D. integrated course is pursued, the M.Phil. duration is supposed to be 1 year.

The eligibility for pursuing this course is that the students should have a masters degree in mathematics from any well-recognized college in India. Those eligible might have to go through an entrance test.

M.Phil. Mathematics: Eligibility

The main eligibility for pursuing this course is that the students must have earned their master’s degree in mathematics from a good college or university. The student should have also obtained the minimum qualifying marks required. This minimum marks criterion is different for different universities. Some keep it at 55%, some at 50%, while some even keep this at 45%. There are some universities which give admission to those students also who have earned their master’s in any domain.

Those students who are eligible according to the above-mentioned criteria have to go through the entrance tests conducted by the universities individually.

M.Phil. Mathematics: Admission Process

Most of the colleges arrange entrance test and interview for admission in M.Phil Mathematics course. Students who clear the eligibility criteria are only allowed to go through the tests. Some universities conduct written tests, while some conduct aptitude tests. Delhi University which is famous for releasing cut-off lists also conducts an entrance test for providing admission in the M.Phil. Mathematics course. There are some universities which just take a direct personal interview round also.

Direct Admission

There is no direct admission to any regular colleges while admission could be acquired in colleges offering M.Phil Mathematics distance education such as Kurukshetra University. M.Phil is a research-oriented course thus direct admissions are not feasible.

Entrance Admission

The forms for entrance examinations are available in the months of June and July and the exam is ideally conducted in the month of June.  The entrance test is of 2-3 hours duration. While most colleges have objective type questions, JNU, Delhi has Subjective type questions thoroughly from the entire syllabus of Mathematics. Students are assessed on the basis of their performance in the entrance test and marks scored in Post Graduation examination. The merit list is issued based on 50% of entrance examination marks and 25% of marks obtained in Masters.

M.Phil. Mathematics: Distance Education

There are some universities which offer this course in distance education mode also.  While pursuing M.Phil. Mathematics Distance Education, the course duration can be more than 2 years.
