Ques. How should I prepare for the AIIMS PG from my 3rd year of an MBBS?

● Top Answer By Supriya Kolli on 13 Jan 21

Ans. The third year of MBBS relatively consists of lesser syllabus compared to other professional years. This implies that you will have ample amount of time to revise the previous year’s syllabus. It is quite early to start preparing from third year but it will act as an added advantage. Though, the focus should be kept completely over the long term. Categories AIIMS-PG Exam Name INI CET Conducting Body AIIMS New Delhi Duration 3 hour Courses Offered MD, MS, MCh, DM, MDS. No. of Questions 200 Cut Off 50 percentile There are few things which must be looked upon by a third year student – You should read all the standard textbooks of the three subjects. You must try to solve MCQs of all the three subjects. You can utilise the free time by revising the subjects in which you feel are weak, in the first and second year. You will gain basic knowledge of the subjects in final year and can even complete 20 – 30% of the final year syllabus to have ample amount of time to revise it in the final year. You should focus on scoring at least 50% marks in the professional exam. Apart from these, you can also opt for a coaching institute to get a professional coaching for AIIMS PG exams. The third year of MBBS is considered to be the best time to enrol in a coaching institute. You can opt for some of the good coaching institutes like DAMS, DMCI, etc. and make daily classroom notes out of it.Read more

Ques. What is the best for a non-AIIMSonian, the AIIMS PG or the USMLE?

● Top Answer By Darshan Singh Bisht on 13 Jan 21

Ans. USMLE is a gateway to achieve your American dreams. Being an AIIMSonian or not, doesn’t quite matter a lot, when it’s about your dreams. Students are judged on the basis of their work performance and CV rather than being AIIMSonian or not.  Though, being an AIIMSonian makes the process easier for an internship year of residency, if AIIMS is preferred by the university which you’re applying for. Some of the professors may acknowledge being an AIIMSonian, but the perks are limited to that only. Categories AIIMS-PG USMLE Conducting Body AIIMS New Delhi FSMB and NBME Duration 3 hours 8 hours Cut Off 50 Percentile Must meet ECFMG criteria Number of Questions 200 280 Application Fee INR 1500 INR 9890.17 (ECFMG Certification - $135) The score and your CV plays an important role rather than being an AIIMSonian which will not overpower these both. While entering the USMLE arena you will discover many achievers who were not AIIMSonian. Students apply for USMLE in search of better jobs, better education and better living conditions. USMLE is indeed an exam dominated by AIIMSonian but that doesn’t mean there is no scope for others. The future of every student entirely depends upon their own rather than the university they are in. The goals of every student and their career preference along with personal choice plays an important role in deciding for the exam to apply for.Read more

Ques. Which one is tougher, AIIMS PG or USMLE?

● Top Answer By Mukul Parashar on 13 Jan 21

Ans. Though both the exams, AIIMS PG and USMLE are tough but definitely USMLE (The United States Medical Licensing Examination) has an upper-hand, having the more tougher topics to deal with. Categories AIIMS-PG USMLE Conducting Body AIIMS New Delhi FSMB and NBME Duration 3 hours 8 hours Cut Off 50 Percentile Must meet ECFMG criteria Number of Questions 200 280 Application Fee INR 1500 INR 9890.17 (ECFMG Certification - $135) There are certain reasons to prove the above statement -  Residency - In AIIMS PG, a good rank guarantees a residency while it’s not in the case of USMLE. A good rank in USMLE doesn’t play a role in securing a residency. The other factors playing a role in USMLE admission are robust extracurricular, US clinical experience and research experience. Though, it’s entirely up to the programme director to decide. Subject – Students securing 1st AIR can choose their subjects according to their own preference in AIIMS. Though, securing AIR in top 10 in AIIMS also does the same. But in USMLE, it is a bit different. In USMLE, scoring an absolutely high score such as 270+ won’t assure you of getting a subject involving intervention. Interview – For USMLE, the interview is mandatory. Students even after scoring ridiculously high scores need to sit for an interview with the programme director who further decides the matching. This is a subjective assessment and marks solely are not responsible for the results. Visa – The procedure for VISA is indeed a lengthy one. Students face a lot of issues while applying for VISA along with the uncertainty of being cropped up at any stage of the lengthy process.  Finance – USMLE is a lot more expensive compared to AIIMS. The cost estimated to cover all the steps is around 10 lakhs. The estimated cost includes the travel and living expenses in the US. Students also need to do the USCE (US Clinical Experience) and the fees are separate for that. After addition of the USCE fees and other expenses, the estimated cost is around 15 - 20 lakhs. Attempts – In AIIMS-PG, the number of attempts doesn’t matter neither the previous rank. Though, in case of USMLE, if any student fails in any of the steps then they can reappear but the failure is marked against them which decreases the chances of matching. In USMLE, failure isn’t the only issue, if any student scores a poor result, then there are no chances of improving that. Students will be stuck with that score for 7 years. Timing – Students after completion of their internship can anytime apply for AIIMS PG exam. Though, students can appear for step 1 during their med-school while the preference is given to the fresh graduates for a better chance of matching. Level of questions – The questions of the USMLE exam is concept based which needs memorising power than the questions in the AIIMS –PG exam. AIIMS–PG is undoubtedly the best among the Indian exams. It is indeed the best test for assessment of correlation and concepts. Though, USMLE tests have more thorough questions with more questions and separate tests for pre/para clinical subjects and clinical subjects.Read more

Certain reference books, Notes and other study materials will help you improve your knowledge about the subject. Also nowadays you can refer to free online classes, with which you will get access to your course at any time of the day. The following table shows the difference between AIIMS-PG and PGIMER - Categories AIIMS-PG PGIMER Exam Name INI CET PGIMER 2021 January session replaced by INI CET 2021 Conducting Body AIIMS New Delhi AIIMS New Delhi Duration 3 hour 3 hour Courses Offered MD, MS, MCh, DM, MDS. DM, MCh, MHA, PhD, Housejob, MSc, MSc (MLT), MD, MS. No. of Questions 200 250 Cut Off  50 percentile 55% For MBBS students – You can first go for Kaplan Biochemistry videos. You should then refer to Lippincott Illustrated Biochemistry along with First Aid. Lastly, you can refer to Harper. For interns – Interns may opt for referring class notes along with the following Rebecca James Biochemistry book. The book “Review of Chemistry” consists of sufficient texts and questions required for the preparation. The book is designed in a student friendly manner which will further make it easier to prepare. Rebecca mam’s classes are also helpful for preparation. Interns and post interns can refer to Kaplan Usmle lectures by Sam Turco which will help them utilise their free time in the most meaningful manner.  They should revise tables and figures from Harper. They should focus more on molecular biochemistry for the PGI especially. Previous year questions should be looked upon by every aspiring candidate appearing for the exam. The textbook of biochemistry should be marked with the topics covering the previous year questions. The probability is much higher of questions being set-up for upcoming exams from the topics covered in the previous year questions. This concept is applicable for biochemistry, dermatology, psychiatry and physiology in the PG entrance exams.Read more

Ques. What books should I use for AIIMS PG (I am studying first year MBBS now)?

● Top Answer By Nikkil Visha on 08 Jan 21

Ans. For a first-year MBBS student, any special preparation for AIIMS PG is not necessary. But following some books as listed below would help in overall development. Subject/ Discipline Book/ Author Physiology (1st year) Guyton Anatomy (1st year) Grays and BDC Biochemistry (1st year) Lange/ Harper’s/ Sathyanarayan Pathology (2nd year) Robbins Microbiology (2nd year) Ananthanarayan Pharmaceuticals (2nd year) KD Tripathi/ Lange Forensics (2nd year) KSN PSM (2nd year) Park Ophthalmology AK Khurana/ Parson ENT Dhingra MCQs for 2nd and 3rd year Arvind Arora Key Highlights: The first task is to build a stronghold on all basic concepts. The syllabus of PG entrance is based entirely on topics from MBBS. So, the first year is a vital part of the syllabus which needs to be covered well. Reading the standard syllabus books is actually enough during the initial years. Books like Guyton, Grays, and Harper are good for both the MBBS course and PG entrance. Moreover, covering the syllabus from point to point is the overall necessity. Only after clearing the theoretical concepts through standard syllabus books, it is advised to practice MCQs for entrance like AIIMS PG.  If you are done with the syllabus and have practiced enough, you can opt for a standard crash course for AIIMS PG. Having a consistent pace helps to extract the best out of college life, and achieve the ultimate goal at the same time. Studying every day to some extent and covering topics consistently decreases the one-time workload.Read more
