Qualifying Criteria

5. Take Full-Length Mock Tests Regularly

Full-length mock tests that replicate the exact FMGE format — including the section-level timer of 50 minutes per section — are essential in the last 6 to 8 weeks before the exam. 6. Revise Community Medicine with an Indian Focus

Community Medicine in FMGE tests Indian public health policy, the National Health Mission, immunization schedules as per the Universal Immunization Programme, and statistical data specific to India. Many students from foreign medical colleges underestimate this subject. A focused revision of Indian community medicine can reliably add marks to your score.

7. Start Preparing During Your Final Year Abroad

Freshers — candidates appearing for FMGE for the first time — had a pass rate of over 35% in June 2026. This is more than five times the pass rate of repeat candidates in the same session. The most effective window for starting FMGE preparation is your final year of MBBS at your foreign college, when clinical subjects are fresh and you have structured time for systematic study.

FMGE and NExT: What You Should Know

The National Exit Test (NExT) is a proposed common licensing exam that will eventually replace FMGE in India. Under the NExT framework, both Indian MBBS graduates and foreign medical graduates will take the same licensing examination. This means the separate screening test for foreign graduates will end once NExT is fully operational.

Current Status: FMGE Continues for the Foreseeable Future

NExT was originally planned to begin in August 2025. However, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has deferred it by three to four years. The exam is now tentatively expected around the 2028–29 academic year. Until NExT is formally notified and launched, FMGE remains the mandatory and only valid licensing exam for foreign medical graduates who want to practise in India.

Do not delay your FMGE preparation while waiting for NExT. The NMC has revised NExT timelines multiple times since 2020. FMGE is the operative exam for 2026 and the foreseeable future.
