What is FMGE 2026?

FMGE stands for Foreign Medical Graduates Examination. It is a mandatory screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) twice a year — in June and December. Every Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) who has completed an MBBS degree from a foreign medical institution must clear FMGE before they can practice medicine in India or obtain registration from the National Medical Commission (NMC) or a State Medical Council.

The exam is governed by the Screening Test Regulations, 2002 issued by the NMC. FMGE tests candidates on all subjects covered in the Indian MBBS curriculum — from anatomy and physiology in the pre-clinical phase to medicine, surgery, and community medicine in the clinical phase. The qualifying mark is 50%, which means you must score at least 150 out of 300 to pass.

Historically, FMGE has a very low pass rate — ranging from 10% to 30% per session. This is primarily because the exam tests India-specific medical knowledge and health programmes that are not always part of foreign MBBS curricula, especially for students who studied in Russia, Ukraine, China, Kyrgyzstan, or Kazakhstan.

FMGE 2026 Eligibility Criteria

You can appear for FMGE 2026 if you are an Indian citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) who has completed an MBBS degree from a foreign medical institution. The eligibility rules are set by the National Medical Commission under the Screening Test Regulations, 2002 and are strictly enforced by NBEMS at the time of application.

NMC tightened recognition norms in 2026 — universities must now meet a dual criterion of being listed in WDOMS and being recognised by their home country’s medical regulatory authority. Several institutions that were previously eligible may no longer qualify under this updated rule. If you are unsure about your university’s current recognition status, check with NMC directly before applying.

Candidates who attended online classes during the COVID-19 period may need to provide documentation about onsite compensation sessions as per current NMC policy. NMC revised its earlier online class compensation guidelines in 2026 after protests from Foreign Medical Graduates.

NRI candidates who hold foreign citizenship (not OCI) are not eligible to appear for FMGE. Only Indian citizens and OCI card holders can apply.

How to Apply for FMGE 2026

FMGE registration is done online at natboard.edu.in. The application fee is Rs. 6,195 (including GST) and is non-refundable. For the June 2026 session, registration closed on May 11, 2026 and the exam has already been conducted. If you want to appear in the December 2026 session, registration is expected to open in the 2nd week of October 2026.

FMGE Application Steps

• Step 1 — New User Registration: Visit natboard.edu.in and go to the FMGE section. Click on new registration and enter your name, date of birth, nationality, email ID, and mobile number. You will receive login credentials on your email and phone.
• Step 2 — Fill the Application Form: Log in and fill in your personal details, contact information, educational qualifications, and foreign degree details including university name, country, and duration of study.
• Step 3 — Upload Documents: Upload a passport-size photo (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm), scanned signature, left thumb impression, MBBS degree or provisional certificate, NMC Eligibility Certificate (if your course started before March 2019), and a valid Indian passport copy.
• Step 4 — Select Exam City: Choose up to 4 preferred exam cities in order of preference. Cities are allotted on a first-come-first-served basis — apply early for your preferred city.
• Step 5 — Pay Application Fee: Pay Rs. 6,195 online using a credit card, debit card, or net banking. The fee is non-refundable under all circumstances.
• Step 6 — Submit and Download Confirmation: Submit the completed form and download the confirmation page with your application number and transaction ID. Keep this safe for future reference.
• Form Correction Window: NBEMS usually provides 1-2 correction windows after the registration deadline closes. For the June 2026 session, there were two windows — May 16-18 and May 21-June 10, 2026. Use these to correct any errors in your submitted application.

You cannot change your exam city after the form correction window closes. Choose carefully and prioritise cities where you are most confident of getting a seat.

FMGE 2026 Admit Card

The FMGE June 2026 Admit Card was released on June 24, 2026 — four days before the exam. Candidates who appeared on June 28, 2026 have already used their admit cards. For the upcoming December 2026 session (exam tentatively on January 9, 2027), the admit card is likely to be released around January 4-5, 2027 — following the same 4-5 day pattern.

About 10-11 days before the exam, NBEMS releases the City Intimation Slip, which confirms the city you have been allotted. For the June 2026 session, the City Intimation Slip was released on June 17, 2026. The exact exam centre address is mentioned on the admit card, which is released 4-5 days before the exam.

Popular cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Lucknow fill up very quickly after registration opens. If you have a strong preference for a particular city, apply on the first day of registration. Once the city correction window closes, your allotted city cannot be changed.

FMGE 2026 Preparation Tips

FMGE has a pass rate that has never exceeded 30% in recent years, making it one of the most competitive screening tests in India. You need a focused, India-curriculum-aligned strategy to score 150 out of 300. These tips apply whether you are a first-time aspirant or returning for a repeat attempt.

Which Subjects to Prioritise

• Community Medicine (PSM): This is one of the highest-scoring subjects if you cover India-specific content — national health programmes, vaccines, biostatistics, and occupational health. Many FMGs ignore PSM because it was minimal in their foreign curriculum. That is a mistake. It is often the subject that separates passers from failures.
• Pathology: Pathology carries significant weight in Part I and is a scoring subject if you focus on systemic pathology and classic slide presentations.
• Pharmacology: The drug mechanisms, pharmacokinetics, and adverse effects questions closely follow Indian textbooks like KD Tripathi. Foreign pharmacology books often use different drug names and classifications — switch to Indian references.
• Medicine: Medicine is the highest-weightage clinical subject in Part II. Focus on clinical scenarios, diagnostic criteria, and management protocols as per Indian guidelines.
• Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Questions are largely DC Dutta or COGDT-based. Management protocols specific to the Indian context are frequently tested.

Study Resources

• Use Indian MBBS standard textbooks — FMGE tests the NMC CBME curriculum, not the curriculum of the country where you studied
• Solve previous year FMGE question papers from at least the last 10 sessions (5 years) — pattern recognition is essential
