Cell signaling refers to the process through which the cells communicate with the other cells present in the body or the with their external environment. It occurs through various pathways. The multicellular organisms perform cell signaling in order to regulate various functions such as nerve cells in the body coordinating with the muscle cells to help in the movement of the body. There are three stages of cell signaling which are:

  • Binding of the signal molecule to a receptor
  • Activation of chemical signals through enzymes, signal transduction
  • At last, the response is seen

The pathways of cell signaling are either biochemical or mechanical. Cell signaling molecules are of various types such as Intracrine ligands, Endocrine ligands, Paracrine ligands, Autocrine ligands, and Juxtacrine ligands.
