Biomolecules are the components of a cell and a living organism that are needed to help perform different biological functions in the living organism’s body. They are also known as biological molecules. They are present in numerous shapes and sizes and each of them perform their own particular purpose in their own specific manner. The biomolecules are majorly divided into carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, which are further divided into their own particular types. So, biomolecules are nothing but macromolecules which are present in the living organisms and help them in performing their different functions in an easy way.

Ques 1: What is the insulin made of?

  1. Glucose and fructose
  2. Fructose and mannose
  3. Mannose and glucose

Ans: a) Glucose and fructose.

Explanation: Being a polysaccharide in which long chains of monosaccharides are bound together through glycosidic bonds, insulin is made up of glucose and fructose.

Ques 2: Which one is an example of the inhibition of competitive inhibition of an enzyme?

  1. succinic dehydrogenase by malonic acid
  2. cytochrome oxidase by cyanide
  3. hexokinase by glucose-6-phosphate
  4. carbonic anhydrase by carbon dioxide

Ans: a) Succinic dehydrogenase by malonic acid

Explanation: In competitive inhibition, the inhibitor which corresponds to the natural substrate and combines with the free enzyme at the active site gets in competition with the substrate to reach the active state of the enzyme. And in the same way, the malonate which resembles the Succinic dehydrogenase inhibits its activity to acquire the active enzyme state.

Ques 3: Which among the following is the fastest enzyme?

  1. DNA Polymerase
  2. Carbonic anhydrase
  3. Carbonic dehydrogenase
  4. DNA ligase

Ans: b) Carbonic anhydrase

Explanation: Carbonic anhydrase is known as one of the fastest enzymes as the average catalytic rate of different enzymes of carbonic anhydrase ranges between 104 to 106  reactions every second. Its rate of speed is limited by the rate of diffusion of its substrates.

Ques 4: Lecithin belongs to which of the following categories?

  1. Polysaccharide
  2. Protein
  3. Nucleic acid
  4. Lipid

Ans: d) lipid

Explanation: Lecithin is a lipid and belongs to the phospholipid category of lipids. Lecithin contains choline and amino alcohol and is usually found in the egg yolks, soybean, and so on. It is also extracted from the soybeans for emulsifying the food products.

Ques 5: Which among the following is not a polysaccharide?

  1. Lactose
  2. Glycogen
  3. Starch
  4. Dextrin

Ans: a) lactose

Explanation: lactose is not a polysaccharide. It is a disaccharide that is made by the condensation of single molecules of two monosaccharides which are glucose and galactose.

Ques 6: NADP contains which of the following vitamin?

  1. B1
  2. B2
  3. B3
  4. B12

Ans: c) B3

Explanation: B3 is a vitamin present in the NADP. It is also known as Niacin or nicotinic acid. It is used for the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose and the metabolism of fats and proteins. It also helps in the smooth working of our nervous system.

Ques 7: What is the minimum amount of energy needed to initiate a chemical reaction known?

  1. Activation energy
  2. Enzymatic energy
  3. Substrate energy
  4. Initiation energy

Ans: a) Activation energy

Explanation: Activation energy is known as the minimum amount of energy that is needed to initiate any chemical reaction. Moreover, it is the energy that is needed to energize the molecules or atoms to make them undergo a chemical reaction.

Ques 8: Which is the protein that has both structural and enzymatic properties?

  1. Collagen
  2. Trypsin
  3. Myosin
  4. Actin

Ans: c) Myosin

Explanation: Myosin is a protein with both structural and enzymatic properties. Also, Myosin can be defined as a motor prototype that reacts with actin to form actomyosin during muscle contraction.

Ques 9: What influences the feedback inhibition of the enzyme?

  1. End product
  2. External factor
  3. Enzyme
  4. Substrate

Ans: a) The end product

Explanation: During the feedback inhibition, the end product influences the enzyme in catalyzing the particular reaction. As soon as a sufficient amount of product is achieved, it influences the enzyme to stop any further catalyzation.

Ques 10: Which of the following comes into use during the hydrolysis of starch?

  1. Peptidase
  2. Amylase
  3. Sucrose
  4. Lipase

Ans: b) Amylase

Explanation: Amylase is an important digestive enzyme, that comes into action as soon as the chewing begins. It hydrolyzes and then breaks down the starch into several other monosaccharides, such as maltose which is then converted into glucose and then it is used as energy.

Ques 11: Out of the following, which one is not a pyrimidine.

  1. Uracil
  2. Thymine
  3. Guanine
  4. Cytosine

Ans: c) Guanine

Explanation: Guanine is not a pyrimidine instead it is a purine. It is one of the four DNA chemical bases which is paired up with the cytosine. The structural similarity of the guanine and adenine brings them under the category of purines.

Ques 12: Which among the following, regarding the enzyme inhibition is true?

  1. Competitive inhibition is seen when a substrate competes with an enzyme for binding to an inhibitor protein.
  2. Non-competitive inhibitors often bind to the enzyme irreversibly.
  3. Competitive inhibition is seen when the substrate and the inhibitor compete for the active site on the enzyme.
  4. Non-competitive inhibition of an enzyme can be overcome by adding a large amount of substrate.

Ans: c) Competitive inhibition is seen when the substrate and the inhibitor compete for the active site on the enzyme.

Explanation: During the process of competitive inhibition, the inhibitor and the substrate compete for the same site. They both have the same structure but the active site only allows a single inhibition.

Ques 13: Glycogen is a polymer of which of the following?

  1. Glucose
  2. Sucrose
  3. Galactose
  4. Fructose

Ans: a) Glucose

Explanation: Glycogen is a polymer of Glucose. It is generally found in the liver. It is an animal starch and a polysaccharide of glucose. However, galactose is a monosaccharide, fructose is a monosaccharide and sucrose is a disaccharide.

Ques 14: Which among the following is the most basic amino acid?

  1. Arginine
  2. Glycine
  3. Histidine
  4. Glutamine

Ans: a) Arginine

Explanation: Arginine is considered one of the most basic amino acids. The reason for it is the stabilization of the positive charge by the process of resonance and it contains a basic side group as well, which is guanidine.

Ques 15: In RNA, the thymine can be replaced by which of the following?

  1. Uracil
  2. Guanine
  3. Both
  4. None

Ans: a) Uracil

Explanation: There are mainly two types of nitrogenous bases, Purines, and pyrimidines. The adenine and guanine belong to the purines and the thymine and cytosine belong to the pyrimidines. In here, the thymine is said to be replaced by Uracil, if needed.

The process of copying genetic information from template strand of DNA into RNA is called transcription. It is mediated by RNA polymerase. Transcription takes place in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. In transcription, only a segment of DNA and only one of the strands is copied into RNA.
