What is Moscovium?

[Click Here for Sample Questions]

Moscovium is a man made radioactive element, we still have little knowledge about it. The metal is understood to be solid at normal temperatures. Ununpentium, the earlier considered name of Moscovium, means one-one-five in Latin. The names of the elements, Moscovium and Tennessine, honor the locations where the elements were discovered.

Nuclear Stability and Isotopes of Moscovium

  • Moscovium is likely to have a range of stability anywhere between copernicium (number 112 element) and flerovium (number 114 element). But, the causes of this stability are still poorly understood.
  • It is predicted that Moscovium decays via alpha decay and perhaps some electron capturing and beta decay.
  • Moscovium isotopes do not have sufficient neutrons for stability on the nucleus

  • Every previous pictogen has five electrons in the valence shell, resulting in a ns2 np3 valence electron configuration.
  • Moscovium is likely to function similarly to pnictogen in many ways because the tendency necessarily is constant as well as the valence electron arrangement is projected to be 7s2 7p3 in this case.
  • Significant variations are expected to emerge, with the (SO) spin-orbit interaction, the mutual interaction between the velocity and spin of electrons, playing a key role.
  • It reduces the 7s and 7p electron energy levels for Moscovium particles (stabilizing the matching electrons), though two of the 7p energy levels are stabilized more often than the other four.
  • The inert pair effect imparts stability to the 7s electrons, whereas subshell splitting is responsible for the "tearing" of the 7p subshell towards less and more stable portions.

Chemical Properties of Moscovium

  • Moscovium is the last element in the chemical compound series Nitrogen family.
  • In the periodic table, it is the bulkiest member of group 15, just below bismuth.
  • Moscovium is likely to be alike in properties to its preceding element bismuth. This property is unique as it was not seen in the previous two groups when the 7th period is considered.
  • Every member of this group is well-known for showing an oxidation state of +5, even with varying stability.
  • Moscovium is expected to be a reactive metal and would normally reduce the Mc+/Mc pair by −1,5 V.

Things to Remember

  • Both isotopes of Moscovium give rise to nihonium daughter nuclei upon undergoing alpha decay.
  • Moscovium has an Atomic Number of 115, Atomic Symbol Mc, Atomic Weight 288. Its Melting Point is Unknown, Boiling Point is Unknown.

Sample Questions

Ques: How to Locate Moscovium on a Periodic Table? (3 marks)

Ans: Elements in the periodic table are arranged by atomic number, the number of protons in the nucleus which is the same as the number of electrons. The atomic number increases from left to right along the table. The periodic table starts from atomic number 1 and ends at the bottom right, atomic number 118. Thus, we can directly look for atomic number 115 to find Moscovium on the periodic table.

Alternatively, to read the periodic table and locate an element is by using group number (column) and period number (row). To find Moscovium on the periodic table, we need to look cross-section of group 15 and period 7 in the modern periodic table

Ques: What are the uses of Moscovium? (2 marks)

Ans: Only a few atoms of Moscovium have ever been created and that too was used only in scientific experiments. It can be used to produce nihonium. Moscovium is synthetic, radioactive and nothing much is known. It is understood to be metal and is expected to be in a solid-state at room temperature. It decays into other elements, like nihonium.

Ques: State the Modern Periodic Law. (2 marks)

Ans: The modern periodic law states that the physical and chemical properties of the elements are the periodic function of the atomic numbers and electronic configurations. The elements with the analogous properties repeat after certain regular intervals. This repetition is seen if the arrangement of the elements is in order of their increasing atomic numbers.

Ques: Is Moscovium toxic? (2 marks)

Ans: Nuclear bombardment is the only known source of origin of Moscovium. In nature, Factor 115 is not observed and it does not seem to have any biological role. It is anticipated to be poisonous, certainly because it is radioactive, and possibly because biochemical reactions will displace other metals.

Ques: As per the modern periodic law the physical and chemical properties of the elements are in periodic function of their what? (2 marks)

Ans: As per the modern periodic law the physical and chemical properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers.

It was verified by Moseley that the most fundamental property of an element is its atomic number.

Ques: What is the 116th element in the modern periodic table? (2 marks)

Ans: Livermorium with the symbol Lv, is a synthetic chemical element that has an atomic number of 116. It is a highly radioactive element that was synthesized in the lab and is not found in nature in the laboratory.

Ques: How did the scientist create element 115? (2 marks)

Ans: Scientists successfully bombarded a thin layer of Americium (atomic number 95) with calcium (atomic number 20) to create Moscovium or Ununpentium (atomic number 115) in an experiment performed at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Science in Darmstadt, Germany.

Ques: What is the most expensive metal on earth? (2 marks)

Ans: Palladium is the most prized of the four main precious metals, with the others being gold, silver and platinum. Palladium is rarer than platinum, which is used by catalytic converters in greater amounts.

Ques: What are the different blocks of elements in the periodic table. Write the general electronic configuration of each block. (3 marks)

Ans: The elements in the long form of the periodic table are divided into four blocks i.e., s, p, d and f. The division is predicated upon the name of the orbital which receives the last electron. General electronic configuration:

s-block elements: ns1 – 2 {n = 2 – 7}

p-block elements: ns2 np1- 6 {n = 2 – 6}

d-block elements: (n -1) d1 -10 ns0- 2 {n = 4 – 7}

f-block elements: (n – 2) f0-14(n -1) d0-1 ns2 {n = 6 – 7}

Ques: Why cations are smaller and anions are larger in radii than their parent atom? (3 marks)

Ans: The radius of cations is smaller as compared to its parent atom as cation is formed by the loss of one or more electrons from the gaseous atom during the nuclear charge of the atom remains the same. In this period the nucleus holds the remaining electrons more tightly this can be explained due to the increase in effective nuclear charge per electron this increase is due to a decrease in size.

Anion is produced by the gain of one or more electrons by the gaseous atom. But the nuclear charge remains the same although the number of electrons goes on increasing. The operative nuclear charge per electron decreases in anions which makes the attachment of atoms with the nucleus a little low as this will increase its size.
