Class 11 Biology Chapter 16 Digestion and Absorption: Important Topics

Digestion is the process of breaking down large insoluble food into soluble food through enzymes which can then be absorbed into the blood. Human Digestive System is the collection of organs that are responsible for digestion. It is a vital process that is driving the human race. The digestive system includes a digestive tract, which connects organs from the mouth to the large intestine.

  • Alimentary canal and digestive glands

The alimentary canal constitutes the entire passage wherein the ingested food is broken down into its constituents and is absorbed for use by the body. When all the components of the gastrointestinal tract are stretched out, end to end, it roughly measures 30 feet or about 9 meters.

The components of the alimentary canal are as follows:

  1. Oral cavity (Also called the buccal cavity)
  2. Pharynx (plural: pharynges)
  3. Oesophagus
  4. Stomach
  5. Small intestine
  6. Large intestine
  7. Rectum
  8. Anus
  • Accessory Organs of the Digestive System

There are additional organs and glands, apart from the organs in the gastrointestinal tract, that are not directly a part of the digestive system but they provide crucial functions that aid digestion absorption or break down of food. These are the accessory organs of the digestive system.

India is one of the megadiverse countries housing around 8·1 per cent of global species diversity, although its land area is only 2·4 per cent of the world’s land area. Many of the species are highly threatened due to human activities like deforestation, mining and habitat fragmentation. Laws like Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 were enacted by the Government of India to preserve our biological wealth. Various conservation measures are being implemented to save the threatened species. The following bar graph shows the number of species conserved under different biodiversity conservation methods.
