Diversity in Living Organisms can be defined as the presence of different organisms within the same ecosystem to lead equilibrium. All the living organisms are made up of many organic and inorganic compounds and each living organism has a different body structure formed by the cells in its body. This gives arise to diversity in the living world and different classes under which different organisms are classified.

Introduction to Taxonomy

Taxonomy is a method of classifying and naming species on basis of their resemblance and contrast. Organism are further grouped as per their domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. These are the major levels of Taxonomy.

Example: What are the types of classification found in Taxonomy?

Solution: The types of classification found in Taxonomy are:

  • Artificial Categorization System
  • Natural Categorization System
  • Phylogenetic System of Classification

Classification of Animal Kingdom

Every species, which has been discovered until today, can be further classified into five kingdoms and one among them is the Kingdom Animalia or simply, Animal Kingdom. 

Example: How is Animal Kingdom classified?

Solution: One key mode of classification of animals is considering whether there is a presence or absence of the notochord. Accordingly, Animal Kingdom is split and classified into two major groups:

  • Chordates
  • Non-chordates.

Evolution

Evolution is a theory that explains the growth and change in the characteristic properties of a species as it shifts from one generation to another. It includes the change and growth of species including plants, animals, humans and more.

Living Organisms are classified according to their characteristics:

  • Size
  • Cellularity
  • Habitat
  • Body organization
