Potassium Sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula K2SO4. This compound is also known as arcanite or sulphate of potash. It exists in two crystalline forms: the \(\beta\)-K2SO4  and the \(\alpha\)-K2SO4. As a chemical compound, it is observed to be odorless, hard, and has a saline like- taste. It has a melting point of 1,069? C and boiling point of 1,689º C.  It is  primarily used as a fertilizer for some crops.

Sources of K2SO4

Minerals rich in Stassfurt salt are the natural sources of the compound. Some of the relevant minerals which are sources of Potassium Sulfate are Kainite, Schonite, Leonite, and Polyhalite. Separating Potassium Sulfate from the mineral is an easier process when the corresponding mineral is water-insoluble. Apart from the natural sources, Potassium Sulfate can also be obtained through the chemical reaction of Potassium Chloride with a Magnesium Sulphate compound.


Structure of K2SO4

Potassium Sulfate (K2SO4) is known to exist in two crystalline forms: the \(\beta\)-K2SO4  and the \(\alpha\)-K2aSO4. The molecular structure of the compound is complex and is orthorhombic in structure.

The compound of K2SO4 contains both ionic bonds and covalent bonds. The sulfate ions are held together by a covalent bond while the potassium ions are connected to the sulfate ions by the ionic bond.

Production of K2SO4

Potassium Sulfate can be obtained by crushing the natural mineral Langbeinite, washing, extracting, and then separating the compound. It is then treated with Potassium Chloride to form Potassium Sulfate.

Potassium Sulfate can also be obtained artificially by a two-step chemical reaction. The first step involves an exothermic reaction at room temperature between Potassium Chloride (KCl) and Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) resulting in the formation of Potassium bisulfate (KHSO4). The second step involves an endothermic reaction of treating Potassium bisulfate with Potassium Chloride forming Potassium Sulfate.


Reactions of K2SO4

Acidification

One of the important chemical reactions of Potassium Sulfate is known as acidification. It results in the formation of Potassium bisulfate or Potassium Hydrogen Sulphate. The chemical reaction involves treating Potassium Sulfate with Sulphuric acid resulting in the formation of rhombic pyramids which melt at 197 ºC. The solution thus formed is soluble in three parts of water at 0ºC and the two compounds involved in the reaction K2SO4 and H2SO4 appear to be present side by side uncombined.
