January 11, 2021: All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has announced that the B.Tech and Diploma in Engineering and Technology degree offered by IGNOU till academic session 2011-2012 will be treated as valid.
Earlier, Indira Gandhi National Open University started offering these technical courses via distance learning, which was later terminated after UGC said that the courses are violating the terms and conditions as technical courses are not permissible to study via distance learning.
Open Central University terminated the two courses after the academic session 2011-12. Since then, several cases were investigated in various courts across India about the validity of these two courses, conducted by IGNOU through distance learning methods.
The Supreme Court of India marked the judgment in favour of IGNOU in the year 2018. After that, these Diploma and B.Tech degrees offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University were treated as valid for the students till the academic session 2009-10.
Recently, The apex court has now granted some relief to petitioners of IGNOU from the academic session 2010-11 and 2011-12.
As they are the last B. Tech and diploma batches from the college and no technical courses have been offered by the college since 2012. So, the court agreed to grant some reliefs to the students of IGNOU.
As per the Supreme Court judgment, the AICTE has no problem treating B.Tech and Diploma in Engineering and Technology given by IGNOU to the academic students till session 2011-12 as valid.
The technical education regulator further added that these two courses are treated as an exceptional case, but validity to these courses cannot be given after the year 2012.
