Gujarat Government has decided to amend the Tenancy and Agricultural Land Act against which the district collector’s are now free to set up educational institutions on the agricultural land without seeking any permission from the government authorities.

Earlier the individuals or entities had to mandatorily seek collector's prior permission to buy agricultural land for educational purposes. Once the latest decision comes in force, land can be bought by non-farming individuals and institutions.

Now the Gujarat CM has agreed to the agreement and the release said that the proposed amendment will be applicable for constructing agricultural universities, animal husbandry university, medical and engineering colleges and other educational institutions.

The official release also said, "The prior permission used to delay the project since the process used to take a lot of time getting title clearance and inspection. In the new revolutionary system, the problem of delay will end."

However, the Opposition Congress party finds fault with the proposed amendment. Gujarat Congress Spokesperson Manish Doshi expressed his criticism, "The BJP Government aims to destroy agriculture and farmers and help their favorable business houses. Like Gaucher land being handed over to industrialists, now the Tenancy Act is being twisted to acquire precious land."

The Government has also decided to allow the sale of land which was purchased for industrial purposes, for other non-industrial purposes as per the provisions of General Development Control Regulations (GDCR).
