West Bengal Schools and Colleges to Remain Closed Till August 31, Announces CM Banerjee

The West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced on July 28, 2020 that the lockdown in the containment zones will continue till August 31, 2020 and hence the schools will remain closed till that.

Addressing a press conference, CM Banerjee said that the decision regarding the reopening of schools will be taken in September. The biweekly total lockdown across West Bengal will remain in place till the end of August and total lockdown will be imposed on August 2, 5, 8, 9, 16, 17, 23, 24 and 31.

Banerjee said, "The biweekly lockdown will be implemented mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. Since festivals like Eid and Independence Day are happening on Saturdays, lockdown will be imposed on some other day."

She also added that if the situation improves, the decision of reopening educational institutions will be taken after September 5, 2020. But toll August 31 all the schools and colleges of the state will remain closed.

The state targets to achieve 25,000 tests per day by August 15, 2020. At present, 17,000 tests are taken in a day.

A lot of people come here for treatment. They are not from Bengal as the state shares borders with Northeast and international borders, but we cannot refuse them medical care", said CM.

Besides this, eight teams with IAS officers have been formed, to take care of the efforts in 8 districts where the high cases are reported.

A sharp criticism is received from the opposition parties, alleging that the state failed to manage the pandemic crisis. BJP National Secretary Rahul Sinha said that the government of West Bengal is clueless about the way forward.

Rahul also asked, "What is the use of Sundays being marked as days of complete lockdown?"

Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged, "When the lockdown was imposed across the country, West Bengal was the only state which did not implement it properly and was busy hiding figures."
