Remarks

The college is well run but the staff should be more eager and swift about the various administrative matters.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The university is a central university and the M.Sc course in Biotechnology is supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The course fee is 14000 for 2 years. The curriculum is enriching and diverse which builds up our skills in various directions ranging from basic biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, computer programming, statistical analysis, bioprocess engineering bioentrepreneurship and scientific laws. The students are required to undergo laboratory training for research purposes for 2 semesters after which they present a thesis on their work. Students are also required to give a seminar on any relevant topic. The entire curriculum builds an aptitude required by a modern day scientist whose only concern is not just research work but productive work which doesn't fall prey to misuse.

Placement Experience

1

Students are encouraged to apply for summer internships and the department also participates in the Academy Summer Research Programme conducted by the Indian Academy of Sciences. There is no placement facility as such as the department is academically oriented. The students get a monthly fellowship of 5000 INR from the DBT, Govt of India.

College Events

4.5

It is a culturally rich place as it was established by the Nobel laureate and poet Rabindranath Tagore. The university celebrates unique events to welcome every season of the year which involves both faculty and students as well as a fair share of outsiders. Some of these fests include Basanta Utsav (Spring Fest) and Ananda Mela (celebrated in Autumn). Seminars and technical workshops are held thouroughout the year in which every student is encouraged to participate.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is nominal since it is a central university. The course fee is 14000 for 2 years. The mode of payment accepted mainly is online with cards and upi. Cash is also accepted. The fee breakdown is transparent and clearly mentioned in the prospectus.

Fees and Financial Aid

The scholarships that can be availed are Kanyasree(WB Govt), Indira Gandhi single girl child scholarship etc to name a few. All the government scholarships can be availed by the students. The Biotechnology students are provided with a fellowship of 5000 INR per month by DBT, Govt of India.

Campus Life

3.5

The gender ratio is even, there are a flurry of cultural activities and workshops. The campus is rich in ethnic diversity and foreign exchange students. The student politics is healthy and enriching. The environment is friendly towards all genders, secular. Lab facilities are excellent and there are numerous university sports arenas around the campus for the benefit of the students.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

I am a hostel dweller. The hostels are clean and well run. Most rooms are 3 seater or 2 seater. The hostel fee is 500 INR per month. There are altogether approximately 15 hostels for the students. Despite the number of hostels, the university strength exceeds the number of seats in hostels. The PG rentals cost around 2000 IND per month.

Alumni/Alumna

Alumni network is flourishing and helpful. The university alumni include Nobel laureate Mr. Amartya Sen.

Admission

The admission for the M.Sc course in Biotechnology is conducted by JNU (Jawaharlal Nehouru University, New Delhi) CEEB entrance exam for biotechnology. The course begins in the month of August every year. The entrance exam is MCQ based and the admission takes place thourough the subsequently released rankings by JNU. After the ranks are announced, students are required to give a choice of which institutes they prefer to get admitted to. If the student is selected then Visva-Bharati mails them and also contacts them with further details of the procedure. On the date of admission, students are required to present the necessary documents after which the admission and payment is carried out smoothly over. The entire process is swift and amicable.

Faculty

4.5

The faculty are highly trained with superior expertise in their respective fields. The faculty have specialisations in different fields which allow the students to extract the best in every subject from each one of them. The number of lecturers in our course is 6 with 4 external lecturers. There are 2 professors and 4 assistant professors. The external lecturers are professors. The average age is 50. All the lecturers are PhD holders in their relevant fields with experience of working projects internationally. Currently they are working on projects of Government of India.

Data Science is a booming industry and the course structure of this institution is at par with other elite, so-called A-Grade institutes, but at a cheaper rate. This was the prime reason for selecting this university. Known about this university from a senior studying here.
