Remarks

The only thing I would feel bad is not having a huge campus. The life sciences and economics departments were separated. Our labs were in different buildings (5 mins away) in my first year which was quite stressful to attend after the theory classes.

Entrance Preview

I took Andhra Pradesh Intermediate board exam with Biology, Physics and Chemistry as majors. I scored 93.3%. It has reputation for having excellent faculty and infrastructure for biotechnology.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The curriculum is common to all the colleges under Osmania university. Majors of my course were Biotechnology, biochemistry and chemistry. Even though there was some overlap between biotechnology and biochemistry topics, the perspective was something that made a huge difference. I would really appreciate if the board can look into this issue and design the curriculum without further overlaps.

Internships Opportunities

The college provided first year fee reduction based on the score obtained in the intermediate exam. In the second and third years, the reduction in the fee were given based on the annual exam scores.

Placement Experience

5

Our college was one of the very few colleges in the city that good placements opportunities, but not necessarily related to the coursework of your majors. I got placed with Deloitte consulting in finance department, not really my field of study. However, I was also offered research job in Reddy labs, but opted for Deloitte because of the pay package and facilties.

College Events

4.5

The college had one annual technical fest called Biovision, were prominent scientists from Centre for cellular and molecular biology were invited. 2-3 months prior to the event, all the students from lifesciences faculty were expected to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations. Selected topics were called for presentations on the day of biovision. Best poster and oral presentation were awarded with prizes. I was one of the lucky students to get the Best oral presentation award in Biovision, 2007. The college also had annual cultural meet, where the subject and college toppers were awarded with gold medals.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee-structure was mildly expensive compared to the government colleges. But as described previously, good performance by getting good scores, reduced the burden of my parents. The fee was 30K per year i.e 90K for the entire course. However a reduction up to 50% was given to me based on the exam scores.

Fees and Financial Aid

The college offered fee reduction to students if the parents annual income was less than 1 lakh a year. Otherwise, fee reduction was given based on the scores obtained in the exams.

Campus Life

4

The gender ratio and diversity were well balanced. All the life science final year students formed clubs through which they conducted debates, quiz competitions and other activities on regular basis. The first and second year students were encouraged to join a club and participate in monthly-based interactions. It was not mandatory to join, but I would suggest because it was very beneficial to interact with seniors.

Hostel Facilities

3

I was living with my parents as the college was a day scholars and did not provide any hostel facilities. However the college was located in a prime education centre with a number of good hostels for girls and boys. I had friends staying in the hostels nearby who were pretty much happy about the food, hostel cleanliness and rent.

Alumni/Alumna

Senior students, I was friends with extended impeccable help right from the initial days. I had opportunity to get books from them which otherwise would have costed me a lot. I had excellent guidance on which courses and exams to take for further education.

Exam Structure

We had quarterly exams internal to the college, followed by final annual exam conducted by Osmania university, a common written exam for all the colleges under Osmania University. We had to work had and prepare well for the exams. The practical courses, even though were fun and interactive, schedule was pretty hectic.

Admission

The notification was released on Osmania university website and in the local newspapers. The application form was available at the college. Before submitting the application, the administration department had organised for a college tour and a question & answer session with the faculty members. Parents were also welcomed to join the interaction. The admission was given based on the intermediate score where the cutoff was 90%.

Faculty

4.5

The faculty were well qualified and knowledgeable. The minimum requirement for senior faculty members to teach was 15 years, which is significantly high enough to gain good experience and keep the sessions interesting and alive. The faculty responsible for practical courses were the best of all, they were more like friends than teachers. We loved and thoroughly enjoyed practical courses.

Placement Experience:

My course is a 3 years course and the students could try for a placement from the start of 3rd year. They would have enough knowledge about the outside world by that time and they could start to apply for jobs and companies that they desire to work for. In our stream there are many companies that have visited us like gala foods, Nestle, Calavita, National Biodiversity Authority, Dodla Diary etc. I do not have an excat idea about the packages but that would range across 8LPA to 14LPA. Almost every student around 95 % get placed into the companies and few also opt for government sector for Quality Control Management, FSSAI and etc. My plans after completing B.Sc in Food Sciences Technology would be pursuing Masters degree
