Remarks

I aspired for IIT/IIITs but since I couldn't make it in IIT, I applied for various Private Institutes including BITS, VIT, Manipal, SRM, etc. I got admission in all of these. I didn't attend BITS due to branch preference (wanted a computer branch). Hence I chose Thapar over VIT, Manipal, and SRM as placements of Thapar are slightly better than these. VIT has a huge crowd. So, I decided to take admission in Thapar's Computer Engineering. Due to the COVID-19 scenario, Thapar University is currently admitting students on the basis of the 12th percentage. But when JEE results will be declared, it will admit some students through JEE for leftover seats. For Computer Engineering, generally, 95% or more is required to get admission. It can be even more this time. The admission process is very smooth at Thapar. All the counseling is done online without any hassle. The branch is allotted automatically according to merit and displayed on the portal.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

I chose Computer Engineering because it has a huge scope in terms of placement and I have an interest in technology and programming. Faculty:Student ratio is pretty nice. No shortage of teachers at all. All the professors and teachers are highly qualified. Most of the professors are Ph.D. from reputed IITs. As far as the course curriculum is concerned, it can be improved as there are many subjects in Computer Engineering which are not needed. Difficulty Semester Exams are moderate. If a student studies two weeks before the exam, he will easily get an 8+ CGPA. It's not at all difficult to pass. But minimum attendance criteria are applicable for offline classes. For placements, at least 6.5 CGPA is required.

Internships Opportunities

4.5

There are many internship opportunities available for students since 3rd year. This year, many companies gave internships to students of 4th year and 3rd year. Students are interned this year in PAYTM, Pharmeasy, Smart Energy Water, Amaedus, Future First, Cisco, Sabre, Sourcefuse, JP Morgan & Chase, Optum, SCB, Microsoft, DE Shaw, HyperVerge, Goldman Sachs, Coudera, and many more as full-time analysts, SDE, etc. Total 201 people are interned till now in these companies. The stipend given was from Rs 20000 to Rs 1 lakh. The average stipend was around Rs 30000.

Placement Experience

5

Students from the 7th semester are eligible for placements. The placements of the current year 2021 are going on and more than 90% of students are placed as of now. The average package of CSE and COE is around Rs 11 LPA. The average package of all the branches combined is around 9 LPA. Companies including JP Morgan Chase, PAYTM, Arcesium, Amazon, Microsoft, DeShaw, Goldman Sachs, Wipro, Accenture, Zomato, Cisco, TCS, Samsung, etc visited Thapar this year and last year. Highest package last year was 43 LPA from Arcesium and Microsoft. Even Apple visited last year. The placement percentage for Computer branches is 100% every year. Many students are interned this year in Paytm, Pharmeasy, Smart Energy Water, Amaedus, Future First, etc, and many more. 24 organizations offered more than 15 LPA, 48 offered between 10-15 LPA, 133 offered 5-10 LPA, 15 offered 4-5 LPA, and 6 offered 3-4 LPA for the 2020 batch. Around 1600 offers were made for the 2020 batch and 900 offers are made till now for the 2021 batch.

Fees and Financial Aid

Currently, expenditure is approximately 4 lakh rupees including Hostel fees. Hostel fees for one semester are around 50 thousand rupees. Fees are hiked every year by around 8-10%. The Total Cost of study for a four-year program would be 5 lakhs rupees as of now. There are many Scholarships available including Merit Scholarship based on JEE score and CGPA of previous semesters. For Students whose annual income is less and come from unprivileged society, there is a Merit Cum Means Scholarship. Apart from this, there are many other scholarships provided by alumni of Thapar University. You can also avail of students loan at very low interest from Banks.

Campus Life

4.5

The infrastructure of Thapar University is top-notch. Campus life at Thapar University is amazing. The campus is very lively with all the facilities, restaurants, parks, sports complexes. We have Nava Nalanda Library well equipped with an ample number of resources. Most of the books & journals required in graduation and research are available. Classrooms are modern built keeping in mind the quality of education. As far as Mess is concerned, Mess of all Hostels is OK. There are many Sports grounds available for playing. All the classes, libraries, etc have centralized AC. There are many societies including Microsoft Learn Student Chapter, Google DSC, OWASP, CCS, entrepreneurship cells, food society, MUN society. Regularly, many events are organized including technical events and Hackathons.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

There are more than 30 hostels in the university separate for girls and boys. Most of the hostels of the university are top-notch. All the rooms have AC and are spacious. Rooms are cleaned regularly on request. As far as Mess and food quality is concerned, food quality is quite good and hygienic. The menu is changed every two weeks. Mess and laundry Costs are included in Hostel fees. The laundry facility is available two days per week. The registration process for Hostel is smooth. It costs approximately 50 thousand rupees per semester for hostel accommodation. If someone doesn't want to be in Hostel, there are many PGs around the campus available.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.

The interest in coding influenced me to choose this subject and course. The curriculum gets me ready for a 9-5 job which kind of gets hectic. The teachers could maybe schedule classes to give the students time to study what they want to and if they wish to do a course outside the university they have the time to do so rather than just going by the university curriculum
