Remarks

Thapar University is one of the oldest colleges in India and has maintained its reputation. Though the fees here at Thapar University is high but the placement percentage is good. There is an environment in Thapar which motivates students to develop, innovate and explore.

Entrance Preview

The admission is done on the basis of Jee Mains score. To apply for BTech courses a person must have scored at least 20% in Jee Mains exam i.e. 72 marks. Some seats are reserved for backward classes and there is a quota for students of Punjab also. For the admission, you need to apply online and there are 4 rounds of online counsellings and after that In-person counseling to fill the vacant seats. I scored 95 in Jee Mains (2015) and at the time of In-person counseling I was offered a seat in Chemical, Meta Production, Software, Electronics Instrumentation, and Electrical. I took admission in Electrical stream.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

With the aim to provide world class education, an academic agreement was signed between Thapar University and Trinity College. Dublin, University of Dublin (TCD) in 2015. So the whole course scheme was revised and practical based courses were introduced which are good for students as now they can analyze and experience each thing in a more effective way that they have read in their books. There are so many sponsored projects going on in Thapar on which many students are working. So in my perception, the course scheme encourages the students who are interested in research work.

Internships Opportunities

There is a project semester in our course scheme. In that semester students are required to spend at least 5 months in the industry. Yes, internship (training) is offered to the students in the campus in that semester and if any student left an impressive mark with his work then he is offered placement package too before the fourth year.

Placement Experience

4

Center for Industrial Liasion & Placement (CILP) arranges placements for final year students. According to the data provided more than 170 companies visited in Thapar University in 2015-2016 (till 30-6-2016) and approx 926 students were placed. Maruti, Tata, Synopsys & Black Rock, Amazon, Honda, Sandisk, Crompton, Oracle, Hike Ltd., Naukri.com visit very often. The placement percentage at Thapar University is more than 90% and the average package is around 6 lakh.

College Events

4.5

Many events are celebrated in our college as for the over all development of the mind co-curricular participation is as important as studies. Also, it is the soft skills that matter after Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). There are many societies in Thapar University that organize many technical as well as sporting events. Saturnalia, Urja, Mudra Nite, Izhaar, Nox Night are the main events.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is on the expensive side. The students who got admission in the year 2016 almost pay 1.3 lakh per semester without including hostel and mess fee. So that's why most of the students not prefer Thapar University because of its fee structure.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes, many scholarships are provided to students here at Thapar. Toppers from each branch are given merit scholarships. Apart from this there are many more scholarships such as Vimlasons Charitable Foundation Scholarship for 1 girl from all years having annual income is less than 10,000 per annum, minority scholarship, post graduate scholarship.

Campus Life

4.5

Campus life here at Thapar University is awesome. Seniors are cool and helpful. Labs are advanced and the kits and machinery is updated regularly. There is a cos market to fulfill all the basic necessities, cricket ground, running track, basketball court and arrangement for indoor games. Many societies (student groups) are there to encourage the talent of students. Socities organize events regularly. Team Fateh is one of the best society for mechanchies, IEI Student Chapter (for electrical, EIC, electronics students), IICHE (for chemical branch students) also debating society, Faps (for students who like photography and drawing), Paryawaran Society and many more societies are there.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

The hostels are good. The University has 12 hostels. Yes, the room is shared between 2 and 4 students. If a student shares a room with 3 more students then he has to pay less fee and vice versa. The food quality is fine. There is a gym in each hostel and guards are on duty 24*7. One bed, study table, and almirah are provided to every student.

Alumni/Alumna

Seniors are very helpful and they guide their juniors well. I worked in Saturnalia (Techno-Cultural fest) last year and I learned many things from my seniors like how to plan for an event, lead a team, marketing strategy.

Exam Structure

The exams tests theoratical as well as practical knowledge of students. The questions in the exam are from the syllabus that is covered in the class. The books and topics of a particular subject are described in the course scheme which is on the college site.

Faculty

4

The faculty at Thapar University is experienced and they alongside course completion, share their technical experience with students. Mostly teachers are strict regarding the attendance criteria. To sit in end semester exams a student needs to attend more than 75% classes per subject else he will be detained.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The interest in coding influenced me to choose this subject and course. The curriculum gets me ready for a 9-5 job which kind of gets hectic. The teachers could maybe schedule classes to give the students time to study what they want to and if they wish to do a course outside the university they have the time to do so rather than just going by the university curriculum
