Remarks
I took admission in Computer Engineering through JEE Mains 2019. The cutoff for JEE Mains percentile for Computer Engineering was around 90 percentile in 2019. But now I think our college has changed the criteria of taking admissions to primarily through 12th board marks due to the Covid situation. Students can also apply to a test conducted by the college for admissions through the college website. The application Fee for the test is around 1200. Yes, there is a reservation for the SC, ST, and OBC category students. I think the admission process should be purely based on the merit of JEE Mains.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose COE over CSE because it is the oldest branch in Thapar. And also the placements are quite good. Average package of COE is around 9-10 LPA. The faculty to student in my college is approx 1:50. Most of the teachers are so humble so whenever you have any doubt or need some help in career guidance, you can contact any of the teachers for your help. The method of teaching is actually like every other in India. Most of the teachers have done Phd in related fields. But honestly I'm among those students who don't attend classes, so can't say much about that but whatever I know is faculty and their teaching method is quite good. Our college is very serious for Exams, even during Covid time they keep giving us shocks of college ready to open after 2 months only for exams. Even when no other college in India conducted offline exams, Thapar made centers in students' own cities to conduct exams. For getting good marks in exams you have to start studying 1 or 2 weeks prior to exams.
Internships Opportunities
Internships start actually at the start of the 3rd year, but one company named JP Morgan conducts a hackathon in 2nd year and hires a good number of candidates. The internship opportunities oncampus are not that good. So you have to keep trying for offcampus in 3rd year if you are well prepared. Names of some the companies with their stipend Salesforce-90k GEP Solutions-50k Optum-50k DE Shaw - 1.5Lakh
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for campus placements in 7th semester and for Internship in 5th semester. The companies that visited this year are Salesforce, Amazon, Adobe, Samsung, Oracle, Paytm, Bain, ZS Associates, VMWare, MakeMyTrip, etc. The highest package is given Amazon worth 27 Lakhs. And package could be around 9-10 Lakhs. Almost 70% of the batch of final year is placed/interned till 27th Dec 2021(the date I'm weiting this review).
Fees and Financial Aid
The academic fee, as well as hostel fee iin Thapar, is quite high and most people are ready to pay this much fee because, in the end, they know that they are going to get a decent placement. Considering my fee from 1st year to present the avg academic fee per sem is approx 2 Lakh and Hostel + Mess fee per sem is approx 70k. They provide scholarships to top 8-9% students. No financial assistance to any other students.
Campus Life
The main fest conducted in Thapar is known as Saturnalia conducted in the months of November and December. Some good singers and stage performers are also called to perform in Saturnalia. Last it was conducted in 2019 and after that Covid took care to not let that happen. The Nava Nalanda Library at Thapar is known for its infrastructure and you will probably find any book if you have the patience to find it. Classrooms are quite good as compared to other colleges in India. For COE/CSE students all the classes are air-conditioned. You can take part in almost all the sports and they have 40-50 societies of which you can be a part to improve your people skills and make new friends.
Hostel Facilities
There are 15 hostels in Thapar named from A to O. The best ones according to the facilities for boys are M and O. For girls the best hostel is hostel N. Almost every hostel has a gym inside. Thapar has a contract with Sodexo for the Mess facility. The registration process for a hostel is good.
