Remarks
Thapar doesn't have an entrance exam itself, you are admitted to this college either via Boards(PCM) percentage or via JEE mains result. The admission form can easily be found on the college website. I myself belong to the General category and thus have no idea about the reservation policy or benefits but there is a 50% reservation for local students i.e. belonging to Punjab state. The improvements I can suggest would be to decrease the reservation of local students and the college fees.
Course Curriculum Overview
Computer science is in demand and I have previous knowledge of coding which was taught to me in school thus I went for COE. COE and CSE are the major branches in Thapar and thus have a majority of the students. Out of 2500 in total, there were 1000 COE students and about 500 more in CS-related branches. We have subgroups with 30-35 students each. About 5-6 subgroups attend lectures at once meaning 150-170 students are being lectured at once by a single faculty in the Coe branch. The faculties are highly qualified and teach well except for a few teachers. In each term, there are mid-sem exams and end-sem exams which happen about 2 months from each other every semester. So after 2 months of commencement of term mid-sems take place and 2 months post that end-sems take place.
Internships Opportunities
Big companies like J.P.Morgan and DE. Shaw offered tech internships on the basis of coding tests and interviews. Many other internships were provided by an internship fair held on campus and there were several roles offered for both tech and non-tech branches. Some students also got internships with the help of their clubs and societies for eg. students got an internship in Microsoft with the help of a club in our college MLSC.
Placement Experience
I am currently in my 5th semester therefore I don't have much knowledge about placements. Currently, a lot of internship opportunities are being provided in almost all fields. The highest package and average package are usually mentioned on the college website. Students become eligible for placements after the 6th semester i.e. the fourth year.
Fees and Financial Aid
The cost will be around15-20 lakhs for the whole degree including everything. The fee for the Coe branch is about 2,30,000 per semester and can vary. The fees are higher because it is a private university and provides good hostels, great faculty, good libraries, good sports facilities, and on-campus restaurants. If you have a board percentage of more than 95 and a good jee mains ranks then you are most probably up for a scholarship which you will have to enquire about. There are no jobs on campus unless they are your placements.
Campus Life
Infrastructure is awesome. The sports facilties are great. Campus has a cricket ground, a football field, basketball courts, open volleyball courts, an indoor badminton court, open badminton nets, different swimming pools for men and women, 4 tennis courts, TT tables inside each hostel and much more. The library is huge and you can find almost every book you need. You can study in the library alone in cubicles or with your friends in rooms inside the library. The classrooms are vary from department to department, some are big and new while some are old and need reconstruction, but most of the classrooms for the COE branch are good. There are more than 50 clubs and societies in the college and most of the clubs have their separate events.
Hostel Facilities
The newer hostels are wonderful with their newly painted walls, new interiors, and attached washroom with each room which is shared by only 2-4 people. If your grades are higher you can demand a single-seater room with no roommate and you only have to share your toilet with your neighbor. The other option is to go for a 2 seater room in which case you'll be sharing a washroom with 4 people. The older hostels have common washrooms which are shared by everyone on the entire floor(100) students and are located at corners of the hostel. Hostel fee is high about 60,000 per semester. The food quality and quantity are great. Only veg food is served with the exception of eggs in the breakfast.
