Remarks

Admission Process at my time (2020) was fully online, which was conducted very smoothly based on the filling of application to the counselling and seat allotment. My admission round was the spot counselling round on the basis of NEET Rank which took place in the month of Nov 2020 due to COVID outbreak. Admissions in Biotechnology at TIET is based on two modes- PCB/PCM scores and JEE/NEET scores. Being in the campus for 2 years now. Moreover admission process offline at the campus during the spot counselling seems like chaos as seen in the admissions this year, that rather can be improved by authorities.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

Our department has around 15-20 professors. All faculty members in the department are highly qualified with experience in both teaching and industrial aspects. The course curriculum, both for theoretical and practical aspects is well designed and is updated every year. There are 2 Sessional, 1 Mid Semester and 1 End Semester exams that take place in course of 6 Month semester. The exams are solely based on what is taught in the lectures and material is duly provided by teachers accordingly. A student with proper notes and understanding of syllabus can pass the semester exams very easily. Laboratory evaluations though require good hands on experience which can be achieved by being attentive during the Lab sessions.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

Internships are being offered to both prefinal and final year students. Also summer internship opportunities are also provided to the students after the completion of 2nd year. Many companies with different profiles visit the university providing a good amount of stipend. Companies like JPMC, Delloite, Deshaw, BnC, Expedia, Microsoft, AMD, Texas Instruments, Matworks, TATA etc. have visited the campus for internship opportunities this year till now. More companies will visit till the end of this year. ELC projects are assigned to students almost every semester to provide them with the necessary hands on experience.

Placement Experience

2.5

Campus placement offers starts coming from prefinal year as companies start making offers for internship that the students have to undergo in a semester in the final year. Statistics about the placement can be accessed through the institute website. Around 70-90% students get placed from every branch here at TIET with remaining students opting for higher studies and others for their own ventures. Specifically, TIET does not recieve core companies of Biotechnology as of now, like the student from the branch if placed, choose non tech profiles in IT, Banking or Data Analysis industry. Rather internship opportunities are provided to the students for some Tech profiles too. After degree, my plan is to work in R&D industry and gain some experience in my core field. Then after that would give a thought to higher studies. Masters opportunities in abroad, as well in some colleges of India like IITs are good enough.

Fees and Financial Aid

Fees structure at TIET is bit on the expensive side keeping in consideration the infrastructure, placement opportunities and similar stuff. TIET offers an engineering degree ranging from 20-25 lakhs around the period of 4 years. On an average 5-5.5 lakhs is the yearly expenditure on the fees of institution including the Hostel/Mess fees. TIET offers merit scholarship initially on the basis of Meritorious boards exams score or JEE/NEET score and after the on the basis of CGPA at the end of every year. This scholarship applies on academic fees of an individual. Other organisational scholarship are also duly conveyed by the college administrations. Companies with good amount of stipend do visit the campus for internships during the pre-final and final year. Not all companies that visit the campus offer stipend, but most of them do. Also different competitions like Hackathons are conducted with good amount of cash prizes.

Campus Life

4

Life at campus is a whole different world. Ranging from cafeterias, sports and recreational areas, TIET provides a great campus life experience. TIET has the best infrastructure when compared to good colleges when compared to other Tier-2 colleges. Start of art infrastructure and facilites are provided by the campus here in Patiala. A humongous learning centre with big lecture halls, fully air conditioned with dedicated sitting areas outside the classes. Well maintained labs with the latest equipment which makes the hands on experience of the theory a whole new experience for better understanding. Library, here at TIET is considered one the best in the country with endless number of books, journal, research publications etc equipped with 4 floors of sitting areas fully air-conditioned. Library here provides a great experience. The annual Tech Fest of TIET- Saturnalia takes place every year in the month of Nov-Dec, due to COVID the event hasn't taken place for about 3 years.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

TIET provides a good hostel facility to its students. Institute has 13 hostels as of now- 7 Girls, 6 Boys with option of 1/2/3 seater rooms with most of them being fully air conditioned. From past 2-3 years the hostel allocation is done on the basis of preference filled and current CGPA of the student. The hostel fees amounts to around 1-1.2 lakhs per annum. Additional mess fees of around 50000 per annum is also been collected from the students. Meals being provided here in hostels are primarily coordinated by a third party organisation named Sudexo with 2-3 hostels having their own independent mess. Quality of the food provided in the hostels are pretty decent. Students do opt for outside campus accomodation too. Patiala does not have much of outside campus accomodation.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The interest in coding influenced me to choose this subject and course. The curriculum gets me ready for a 9-5 job which kind of gets hectic. The teachers could maybe schedule classes to give the students time to study what they want to and if they wish to do a course outside the university they have the time to do so rather than just going by the university curriculum
