Remarks

Generally, admission to Thapar University takes place on the basis of JEE mains ranking. There are no entrance exams as such. The application form for admission can be found on the TIET website. There is an application fee charge, i.e. Rs. 1500. Application dates are generally from June to July of every year. There are reservation benefits for all sections of society, i.e. SC, ST, OBC etc. Students residing in Punjab get a lower cut-off in the admission merit list for selecting an engineering branch. In my opinion, the admission process is good and provides good chances to people who have a percentage/JEE ranking near the cut-off but couldn't make it. There are spot rounds and open counselling for further chances of getting their favourite stream/branch.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

Computer Engineering is the oldest and best course Thapar University offers with one of the best placement statistics among private universities in India. Faculty: Student ratio in a class is about 1:50 Faculty are of top quality. Every professor has a rich teaching experience many have their PhD. from IITs. Teaching quality is good but does not expect the same level as school teachers as professors have best research quality than teaching. But still, there are many professors who can make concepts clear easily. They have plenty of knowledge and experience on the subject. The course curriculum is followed according to UGC and is very well planned to make every student industry-ready and professional. There are 2 major exams per semester that are mid-semester (MST) and end-semester (EST). Sessional quizzes occur throughout the semester. Semester exams are difficult, which makes Thapar a prestigious university.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

Currently, as of 2022, there are multiple companies which have visited on-campus and offered internship opportunities. Some of the companies, along with their stipend are- JP Morgan (Rs. 75,000), D.E. Shaw(Rs. 1,50,000), Adobe(Rs. 1,00,000), Trilogy(Rs. 50,000) and many more. These companies offered SDE roles under the internship with a stipend. The main tasks in the internship as an SDE included- Working with teams on different industry projects, Data handling etc.

Placement Experience

3.5

Students become eligible for placements mainly from the 4th year onwards, although on-campus internship opportunities start coming from the 3rd year onwards. Some of the top recruiting companies are Microsoft, Amazon, JP Morgan, TCS, Reliance Industries, HSBC, Zomato, Wipro, Samsung, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Deloitte, Infosys, IBM, L&T, Accenture and many more. Around 1653 offers were made in 2021-22, out of which 1357 single offers and 148 multiple offers were made. The highest salary package in 202 was 39 LPA; the average salary was 7.2 LPA. The highest package offered was 43 LPA in 2019 by Microsoft. More than 79% of students with an above 6 CGPA were placed, and around 38% of students were placed with less than 6 CGPA. As a student, I plan to pursue higher study in my interest field.

Fees and Financial Aid

The cost to study per semester is high compared to some private universities. Semester fees are about 2lacs per semester, excluding the hostel fees. There has been a slight fee hike, but the amount of development for research and campus development is noticeable. Multiple scholarships are offered on a merit cum basis, and they can be availed upon keeping a good CGPA score.

Campus Life

4.5

Campus life in TIET is amazing! TIET hails one of the best annual fest in North India - Saturnalia. It's an annual tech cum cultural fest organised in the month of November. The college has a state-of-the-art library consisting of a huge collection of academic and non-academic books and journals, high-speed WiFi, and group discussion rooms. All Lecture halls are best in class. They are uniquely designed with WiFi, projectors and a well-organised seating plan. There are many facilities for sports and games, like a football field, cricket ground, Olympic-sized synthetic athletic track, multiple basketballs, badminton, tennis courts, and a swimming pool. TIET has its own sports team, which regularly competes in inter-university competitions. TIET has many societies/clubs of different fields and interests which host a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Some societies of Thapar- TAAS, MLSC, OWASP, CCS etc.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

There are very good and modern designed hostels for both boys and girls having air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned rooms. Hostels have high-speed WiFi, laundry service, reading rooms. All the mess canteens are managed by Sodexo company, providing very good food with a special menu designed for every festival. Hostel Registration is very simple and is done very quickly by filling out preferences. The hostels are allotted on the basis of the student's CGPA. Hostels are decently priced at about Rs. 50,000 per semester. Patiala City is a very good city having nice localities. So students can also try for PG or rented room. The university is in the city so travel time is very less.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The interest in coding influenced me to choose this subject and course. The curriculum gets me ready for a 9-5 job which kind of gets hectic. The teachers could maybe schedule classes to give the students time to study what they want to and if they wish to do a course outside the university they have the time to do so rather than just going by the university curriculum
