Remarks
Five counselling rounds took place for the admission. The first three were based on 12th-class marking. The other two were based on JEE mains marks. For counselling, we used to get a pdf of cutoffs for every branch with the help of which we used to calculate our branch and lock it. If we didn't by the next counselling we will lose that branch and will get degraded to some other branch. The application form can be found on the official website of Thapar. The application fee is 1000 rs. The eligibility criteria was 60% marks in 12th and You should have attempted JEE mains at least once. We used to ask queries while the admission process and also tried calling the contact info given on the website but we got no response. I wish they improve as this is problematic. I'm in CSE and the cutoff for my branch was 98% plus in the first three rounds of counselling and 97 plus percentile in JEE mains.
Course Curriculum Overview
I choose CSE as I just wanted to study engineering related to computers. Next, I compared CSE and COE and CSE got more software-related subjects that's why I choose CSE. Ratio for lecture classes: 1 faculty to 300 students Labs: 1 faculty to around 50 students The qualification of most teachers is a PhD. Most teachers just read PPTs and don't show much interest in teaching but they help out with hackathons and projects a lot. They can guide nicely. Except first year all semesters are of a 5-month long duration. In those 5 months out mid-semester exams are conducted after 2 months and then end-semester exams are conducted after two months. Multiple quizzes and lab evaluations take place 15 days before both of these exams. The difficulty level of exams increases year by year and it's hard to pass these exams. To pass you have to study consistently for 5 months.
Internships Opportunities
The college arranges internship offers every year in August-September for students in the 3rd and 4th years. Some of the companies are Blackrock, Samsung, etc. Samsung conducts a test that contains DSA questions and once you clear that you are in for a project and once you clear that project they hire you as an intern.
Placement Experience
From the 7th semester, students can sit for college placements. Some of the companies were: Amazon, Deloitte, Naukri.com, HSBC, Tredence, Zynga, MamaEarth, Optum, Blackrock, Future First, Shell, Bain and Company, Siemens, ORACLE, American Express, Signify, Stonewain, Arista, etc. This is the data from the very recent placements of our college: 6 students with 1cr+ packages, and 20 students with 25LPA + packages. The average package was 10LPA. Most companies hired full-stack developers and data analysts. Around 1500 students got placed from 1700 offers. I want to get placed at a prestigious company as a full-stack developer.
Fees and Financial Aid
For my course, the fee structure is: 1 st year - 2L per sem, 2nd year- 2.18L per sem, 3rd yr- 2.38L, 4th yr- 2.6L with this, they charge extra from the third year onwards if you're choosing an elective. The yearly fee to choose an elective is around 90,000. First 20% of students from every branch on the basis of their yearly CGPA get their fee reduced by 1 to 4 lakh every year. Except this, the first 10 students from every branch on the basis of their JEE mains percentile get the fee reduced for the first year only. Apart from this, there are some more scholarship opportunities on the basis of the annual income of the family + CGPA + branch.
Campus Life
Annual fest : Saturnalia . It takes place around November every year. There are a large number of books available in the library. The classrooms are big and comfortable. They contain a manual board and also a projector. Sports events happen every 3 months and you can use sports resources(shuttles, basketballs, footballs, etc.) provided by the college. There are different grounds for playing cricket, basketball, football and a swimming pool too. There are ample amounts of societies in Thapar like Toastmasters, FAPS, MLSC, GirlUp TIET, FROSH, etc. In fact, Thapar's toastmaster's club is the most well-known toastmaster's club in India.
