Course Curriculum Overview

4

Mechanical enginneering of Thapar University is very renowned and respected across the world. The faculty to student ratio is, for every 120 students there are 5 lecturers. The faculty that teaches us are very qualified and also from very respected universities from across the India. The teaching method includes teaching through ppts and also providing some animations in between for better understanding. Term exams are also set accordingly and atleast 2 hours daily to every subject can definatly grant you an extraoridinary grade.

Internships Opportunities

3

As I mentioned earlier that I am in first year, so I dont know entirely about the internship provided. But according to some seniors, different kinds of internships are provided according to your skills and you can also take paid internships other than internships provided by University. Professors are also working on different kinds of projects.

Placement Experience

4.5

During the 6th semester students become eligible for placement rounds through campus. There are many reputated companies that visit Thapar university for placement and the offers made are all above 10-15 lakhs per annum. The highest package in Mechanical engineering is about 45 lakhs per annum that was given in this year only. Percentage of studnets getting placement is 100%. My plan is to pursue Masters abroad.

Fees and Financial Aid

Fees has been hiked recently and I dont think that was an good decision as there are many students who are not able to afford this sum of money. There are different types of scholarships available and there is a department called 'Financial department' wher you can visit for any finanial guidance. Personally I am in 1st year so I dont know much about the placement procedure but as I talk to some seniors they say that the average package companies offer are above 10 lakhs per year and also the internship provided by university gives atleast 12,000 of stipend.

Campus Life

4.5

There are many types of fest continuosly going on like Thapar Food Fest (TFF), Saturnalia (SAT), Econigma, TFF is concluded during the month of october, SAT is conducted during start of December, for more festivals you can visit the Thapar university website. The 'Nava Nalanda Library' here is world's 7th stunning library with well over 4, 5 floors and numerous books for every subject and research purpose you need. Classrooms are insulated and seating capacity of every classroom is about 100-120 students, classroom has an AC, projector. There is an sports campus for those who are intrested in sports, if you have qualified national level in any sport, a coach is provided to you and further guidance is given regarding those sports managing your study time accordingly, ther are also many social groups ran by students like TFF, SAT,PWS, FAPS, ACS, etc.

Hostel Facilities

4

There are 8 hostels for boys and 5 for girls, some hostels have facilities of single room, double sharing, triple sharing and 4 sharing, A bed with a table, a shelf to keep books, a wardrobe and a balcony is provided in the room. Meal provided is very authentic any menu includes particularly menu of punjabi dishes. For hostel registration you first have to pay the hostel and mess fees online and write a mail to caretaker and then when you arrive to hostel a mees card is provided to you via which you can assure your entry in mees, hostel is somewhwere affordable considering all the facilities provided. There are a number of PGs available for girls and boys seperatly to stay around the college premises.

Admission

I took admission through my JEE Mains 2023 score, there also an option of getting admission through your 12th board percentage. Eligibility criteroa for JEE Mains was none but for 12th board percentage criteria you should have atleast 60% in PCM aggregate. Application form for every course can be found on the admissions tab in their website. Reservation is given to theose who are Punjab domicile and some of the other SC/ST candidates from other states every other is considered as an General category student. The admission process is very smooth and right now I dont think any improvment should be done in it.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.
