Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

My Course is a B.E in Electronics and Computer Science(ENC). This course offers 60% electronics subjects while 40% computer subjects. This branch was started by this college 6-7 years back with the aim that this branch will provide some better service because students have knowledge about both the fields. This is true because companies are more interested in this branch as compared to electronics or computers provided the students have the knowledge base. It is observed that in the past few years, the average package of ENC branch has been higher than even computer. It is important to note that the branch comes under the electronics department not computer and all the faculty is also from the electronics department. Although they are all good. The course curriculum is designed to offer a taste of both electronics and computers to students but not specialisation in either(you have to do that on your own). Also, exams are held 2 times in a semester with some practical/quiz evaluations.

Internships Opportunities

2.5

As compared to the internship there are a bit fewer internship opportunities. You have to go and look for an intern on your own. On-campus internships are 5% barely. What you can do is that the teachers are very well connected so they can give you referrals and LOR which can help you in getting a job or intern. You can do project and research papers with professors and they can provide you with an internship/research certificate instead.

Placement Experience

3.5

Students become eligible for the campus placements in 4th year. Although on-campus internship companies start coming in the 3rd year. There are 200+ companies coming and offers are made going up to 50 lacs ctc. Some of the prestigious companies coming include Microsoft, American Express, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Google, Intel, Delloite etc. The highest package goes up to 45-50 lacs while the average is 11-12 lacs. Although there has been a decline in companies this year due to recession. Companies come for all types of roles including tech and non-tech.The usual percentage of students getting placed in my branch is 90% and to the end almost everyone gets placed. If you are not placed college provides placement assistance for up to 3 years although you have to look on your own off-campus. Off-campus sources are linked in, unstop, etc. My plan after graduation includes a job for 2-3 years and then pursuing a higher education MBA.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fee submitted per semester right now is 2.08 lacs per semester i.e. including the tuition, health, development and all other types of fees. This fee has a 10% hike in tuition fees every year. Other than this you are required to pay hostel fees of 47-60 thousand depending on the type of accommodation you choose and are allotted, with a 24,000 mess fee. The cost of my engineering is around 25 lacs for 4 years including academic, hostel and mess fees. The campus offers scholarships on the basis of merit and family income. Every year the top 10% of students are relieved with some scholarship, and there is also a scholarship for low-income families with a cap of 10-15 students ( merit shortlisting is done in case of clash). There are no opportunities for part-time employment within the campus in case of help, although you can go outside the campus and find something.

Campus Life

5

In the case of fests and events, Thapar is very active. Thapar's annual cultural fest 'Saturnalia' is held every year in late November, and Thapar's annual food fest "TFF" is held every year in early September, Thapar also has a sports fest called "URJA" is held every year in February. All of these fests are very grand scale events and can be called the charm of college life when you are free from classes and enjoy college life. These fests feature the biggest of artists and entertainment. Apart from this thapar also houses many societies for students where you grow, learn and interact. Thapar has the biggest library in north India colleges with a world-class infrastructure. The college is recently renovated and still some part under construction of new buildings, so classrooms and all are very modern with labs holding the latest of equipmets. With a 250 acre campus Thapar offers a very large variety of sports activities like basketball, badminton, squash, tennis, swimming, track etc.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

Thapar is no. 1 in the category of hostel accommodation and mess food (not joking), private college has its perks. As compared to other colleges Thapar accommodations are far better. There are 3 seater- 2 seater - and 1 seater accommodation types. While majorly there are now 2 seaters. There are rooms with both an attached washroom and a sharing facility. Room furniture is new because all the hostels have been renovated in the last 2 years and some are under construction. There are lifts in every hostel with private balconies in some. If anything is broken it is prepared within 3-4 days plus room cleaning is provided regularly. Also, most rooms have AC fitted. Mess food quality is superb in comparison to other colleges and there is a laundry service as well. If a student wants to take a PG there are some options nearby charging 6-7000 monthly, excluding food and laundry.

Admission

I applied for admission in 2021 on the Thapar official admission portal. An application fee of 1500-2000 was charged to me at that time. The applications opened in January and were open for about 4 months. For the engineering courses, Thapar asks for PCM subjects in the 12th class (exceptions are biomed and biotech which ask for PCB). Also, an aggregate of 75% is required to be scored in 12th as the eligibility criteria to sit in the admission process. Thapar takes admission based on both 12th class board and JEE Mains marks. At my time 2/3 of the seats were filled from the 12th marks and 1/3 from JEE, but now they take 2/3 from JEE and 1/3 from JEE. The cutoff for Computer branches now goes above 97%(PCM- where C can be replaced by some alternate subject like computer science etc) and for the electronics branch it goes above 95-96 %. These cut-offs are for the general category. Thapar offers reservation to Punjab quota of 30%, SC/ST/OBC, and 1% reserved for the management students.

Other Applied Colleges

Manipal Institute of Technology - [MIT] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Computer Science and Engineering)

As compared to Thapar University, Manipal offered lower average packages and placement percentages. Also in terms of infrastructure, contact building and social activities, I found Thapar a better choice.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The interest in coding influenced me to choose this subject and course. The curriculum gets me ready for a 9-5 job which kind of gets hectic. The teachers could maybe schedule classes to give the students time to study what they want to and if they wish to do a course outside the university they have the time to do so rather than just going by the university curriculum
