Live Laugh Love at Pondicherry University

Since NEP has come into play since this year, our course curriculum is a bit different from seniors. We study things that are practical a bit earlier in the course years so as to have an idea about what you are actually learning instead of just mugging up the theories. Teaching methods include audio visual and other facilities required for the respective courses. Every semester, there are two internals, two assignments, and the final semester exam for a subject. Your sgpa and cgpa are then calculated. In case, the semester starts late due to faculties being busy with the admission process then it might become a bit hectic at the end with all the internals together but the semester exams are scheduled properly and on time. But if you take courses from other departments, they might keep the exams late and take up your vacation as those courses typically start late.

There are many internship opportunities available for students that you can do during your vacations and also during your semester after your classes are over. You can go to banglore or some other places for an internship to build your portfolio. Taking up an internship is applauded and encouraged here.

There are campus placements and the average package is around 5 lakhs per annum. The students getting placements are low here from my observation and I think it would be better to go for higher studies or get jobs from outside. There are however many famous companies that come here.

The fees here are higher than almost every other central university with the first-semester fee being almost 22000 for ug 1st year along with the hostel and mess fees if you are staying at the university. But there are many scholarships available for those who are eligible like Inspire, egrantz, etc. The course fee for bsc+msc (5 years) in applied geology is almost 86000 which is much higher than most of the other central universities in India.

The campus life and nightlife at Pondicherry University are truly amazing with programs and events happening almost every month. There are many clubs and events that cater to your interests and also the facilities available inside the huge 800-acre campus are numerous. Since there is no curfew or no dress code students have more freedom than most of the other colleges in India. The campus is well equipped with facilities with every classroom having smart boards and some classrooms even having ac. There is also a reading room that operates till 3 am in the morning and a library with a huge collection of books. There are also two stadiums and an indoor badminton court and plenty of greenery which is essential for the hot weather of Pondicherry. There is also a shopping complex which had most of the essentials needed for a college student.

There are 8 girls hostel inside the University with each hostel alloted for each years. The hostel admission process is a bit tedious because you are supposed to take all your luggage and walk around to find your hostel from the hostel office (madam curie hostel) which can be a bit tiring but the hostel rooms are pretty good but it gets really hot during the summers. The mess food is truly a let down and you get tired of the menu after a while. You might also ocassionaly get worms and other living organism in your food but its even worser in the boys mess. The puris are oily and might give you a headache at times. There might even be long queues waiting for certain things like curd or aloo parathas due to the staff being late to cook and put them out.

You are eligible to join a course in the ug level if you have a minimum of 55% in 12th grade with eligible subjects and also considering your cuet ug exam score. There is a reservation for obc, sc/st, pwd, residents of pondicherry union territory, etc. The problem with the admission process was that they gave out the notice on 21 Aug 2023 to report there on 23 Aug 2023 which is obviously not possible but they thankfully extended the date. The admission portal processes were however hassle-free with the university releasing selection lists and at last spot admission too.

The faculties at my department are truly amazing and wonderful especially when it comes to their teaching abilities at making you understand things while at the same time increasing the interest towards the subject. The HOD is very friendly and helpful and available most of the time. In case of certain courses, some courses are divided into some sections and those sections are taken by different faculties making teaching more efficient and in their field of expertise. Our faculties are highly qualified with some of them having degrees from iits and jrfs from foreign countries like South Korea, etc. They are also a bit on the younger side which set aside huge generation gaps and easier to relate to them. They also take you on field trips for practical learning which makes you even more curious about the subject. Overall i would say, Earth science department is the best department at Pondicherry University.
