Course Curriculum Overview

3

Our college maintains discipline, but in many colleges, often the syllabus is not completed, so more supervision is required to check if the college completes the syllabus. We had an Internal Assessment, 20 marks and semester exam, 65 or 50 marks , remaining alloted to projects and presentations. There are 6 semesters, 2 in a year. The paper is often tough and lengthy.

Placement Experience

3.5

There is a placement cell which is active and sometimes holds seminars on behalf of different companies. Students from sem 5 , who have cleared the previous semesters can sit for placements. ICICI Prudential, Bajaj Finance, Aditya Birla Finance, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, EY, HDFC Bank, visit for recruitment. The average CTC is 4 to 5 LPA, the highest CTC last year was 9 LPA offered by HDFC Finance.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fees for the B. Sc. Economics (Honours) course in Scottish Church College is around five thousand per semester, for general category students. The deposit amount required to pay during Admission is around ten thousand. No management quota is available. Admission is purely on merit basis. For Schedule castes(SC) or Scheduled Tribes(ST), or for Christian students, there is a fee waiver of around 50 percent of the total semester fees.

Campus Life

4.5

An annual fest, named CALEDONIA, used to be held every year around November, but it's stopped after COVID, can start again, I think. Apart from that, there are departmental fests.B. Sc. The maths department also started their annual fest. Also we've fests conducted by Economics, B.B.A.and Computer Science Departments. There are also a lot of activity clubs like Debating, painting, singing, Drama and Sports clubs. A chess club was also started last year for chess enthusiasts. The college library has lots of books(over 40000), magazines,14 newspapers, more than 5000 ebooks and old books preserved properly, making it one of the best library in West Bengal. There is a common room with TT and carrom board. The ground also has facilities for basketball, javelin, volleyball football shotput practices, and they teams win various prizes.modernize

Hostel Facilities

3.5

There are 3 hostels-wann,Duff and Ogilivie-for boys and one hostel-Lady Dundas-for girls, which is huge. Single rooms are provided in boys hostels, with provisions for double sharing or 4 sharing also. Girls hostels have double or triple sharing rooms. The food is okayish, but fresh. Vegetables are bought every morning and cooked. Bathroom is also cleaned every morning, with ample water supply. The room is decent, but they don't provide light, fan or bedding.they charge 47253 for boys annually, to be paid in 2 installments, 27k and 20k and around 55k for girls annually. Usually a separate form is released for hostel admission just after new admissions, which needs to be filled up and pay the first installment of 26007,to avail hostel. Also the area where the college is located, also has a variety of PGs which usually charge around 2.5 to 4k for bedding charges. Food is also not a problem as the college canteen food is pretty good and there are lots of restaurants and home deliveries around

Admission

I got offers from Presidency University, Kolkata, Vishwabharati University, Bolpur. In Presidency Uni, the students are more immersed in any other activities. Scottish Church College, is the only co-ed college to come under top 80 colleges of India, and Calcutta University always comes within top 10 state universities of India. I also applied in Jadavpur University, but couldn't get chance as it was COVID year and my marks weren't enough. Admission to every college under Calcutta University is purely merit based, on the marks obtained in 10 and 10+2 level.

Faculty

4

The faculty-to-student ratio is 1:8. There are 4 teachers, Prof Susmita Nath teaches Mathematics for Economics and Econometrics, she's the best one can have. Prof Gangopadhyay, she teaches microeco pretty decent, prof Guha, teaches development eco, banking, and environmental eco. Lastly, Dr Manna she tries to teach Macro but doesn't do it very well, but she's helpful. There are 6 semesters, having 65 marks for core papers and 50 marks for DSE papers. 20 marks allotted for Internal Assessment and 15 marks for projects and presentations.

Other Applied Colleges

Presidency University | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] {Hons.} (Economics)

The university have long lost it's reputation. The faculty is not good. Although the campus life is awesome, the academic life is not good. The syllabus is not very good and lastly the university lacks an academic environment.academic

Placement Experience:

People who major in my department usually opt for masters over placement not because of this college but because overall industrial or academic opportunities are better with a pg degree. Masters from this college is not recommended as i have heard so from my seniors. Some of my seniors managed to crack competitives and secure MSc seats at great places. Training and Placement cell had a good coordinator previously but now its almost non existent. Companies do come and hire Bpharm, Mpharm and MSc candidates. Packages are below average. Only Nestle pays well. But if you do well you'll eventually climb up the corportate ladder. From the time i am here i have not heard of any BSc candidate getting placed. Most go for higher studies.

Placement Experience:

The average package offered for such roles ranges between ?2–3 LPA, while the highest package offered to a BSc student is around ?4 LPA, depending on skills and specialization. Overall, around 15–20% of BSc students get placed through campus drives, and many students rely on off-campus opportunities.

The course is very relevant as it provides us an overall knowledge of biology and not dividing it into various sections rather giving us an insight of every aspect of biology. It includes everything such as microbiology, zoology, botany, physiology, molecular biology and so on.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum was well thought out as per me but there were subjects that i found absolutely unnecessary. Subjects like history evs and clc were in no way related to my course. Coming to the main subjects Design, Printing, Photography and film and Media Training were absolutely necessary for my course and whilst the faculty for some of these subjects were really bad, some were good. It is also important to mention none of these subjects actually helped us prepare for the real world. Instead internships and freelance helped us more than these subjects could ever do. Exams were held bi monthly to keep track of what we learnt and every 6 months we had our semester exams. Overall if you want to be a media professional INTERNSHIPS AND JOBS WILL HELP YOU MORE THAN A COLLEGE WILL. I am biased on this opinion as my college didnt provide me with the correct guidance and support i needed to make it in the real world.

In case of computer science department, placement is provided at the Last year of M.sc course. Many companies like Wipro, b10x, Tata visited here. Highest package ever is three lakh per annum. 20-40% of the students got placement after completing M.Sc computer science. My plan after B.sc is to pursue MCA.

* It's all about practical knowledge, we are getting from this course and another aspect is if you wants to make your career in research or lecturer then you should go for it. *No changes required in teaching methods but if college will provide hostel facilities and campus requirement drive, then it will better for candidates.
