Life at Gargi

Curriculum is exhaustive. Multiple options and combinations are offered. With NEP 2020, students have been given more flexibility to choose between various subjects. Nevertheless, these subjects have only added to our burden. Even these optional subjects SEC, VAC, AEC conducts their practical exams, requiring us to make practical files and such time consuming stuff, which adds no value. Some subjects are fine. Implementation of NEP has been poor. Exisiting faculty has been given charge of these subjects who themselves are clueless. If studied properly, these subjects might add value. However, college students are not really concerned to study a subject entire semester, it's just one day before that we get our hands on them.

Students are eligible for sitting in campus placements in Semester 5. Placement Cell of the college is responsible for getting their students placed. Handsome no. of companies visit every year. Including Big 4s(Deloitte- 6.05LPA, EY- 3.5LPA), DE Shaw- 23LPA, Zomato, Bank of America, Nation with Namo, Ditto and more. Average package varies between 5-6LPA. Dream slots include DE Shaw which offer 23LPA and Nation with Namo offering 20LPA. Big 4s hire in masses. Thek take 30-40 students each. Of the batch of say 200 people actually sitting for placements, 150 get placed. Ratio is good enough. Some people have other plans than placement. I also have been placed at Deloitte and hence will be joining the firm after my graduation.

1st year(2022-23)- Rs.14,975 2nd year(2023-24)- Rs.15,750 3rd year(2024-25)- Rs.18,145 This is the fees for General Category. There's no such segregation of fees in the receipt. The total overall fees came out to be about Rs.50,000 for three years. Given my course i.e, BCom(H) there's no lab fees or other compulsory charges. For persons with PwD, fees amounts to Rs.875 for one year.

Every year an annual fest of Gargi, called Reverie, takes place. It is a three day event whereby different societies organise their respective competitions/events. And on the main day there comes an artist. Fest of Gargi was renowned. But now it has very much degraded in the sense that it takes place during the day time. Concert in the day! And then no outsiders are allowed. Moreover, there are multiple other restrictions. Infrastructure is very average. Even when there are some fans, many are not working. Washrooms are poorly built. Projectors are there but not in every classroom. There's a lot of problems in finding classrooms with projectors. In respect of sports and extracurriculars, it depends on the student how they want to carry their ECAs along with their studies. Societies including Upstage(Dramatics), Kshitij(Street Play), Enliven (Western Dance Soc) provide students a chance to enhance their skills. Exposure however is a biggest issue. There are no fellow colleges other than Kamala Nehru. The area lacks the campus vibes.

Only applied to DU. Got Shaheed Bhagat Singh in the first round. I got upgraded to Gargi in 3rd round. I didn't choose Shaheed Bhagat Singh because Gargi College at that time had a good reputation. However, it was a difficult decision to make to choose between the two. Both stand equal today.

There were enough teachers when we were in our first year. However, with the upcoming batches, number of students enrolled has significantly increased, leading to decline in the faculty to student ratio. Classrooms at times donot accomodate the strength of students. Consequently, teacher' voices are unable to reach many. Faculty, however, is highly approachable and understanding. Some teachers have retired this year(Prof, Geeta Kichlu), she taught us Business Law in first year and Company Law in 2nd. She was a motherly figure to us. Made us feel at home. Some teachers were admitted on merit basis, didn't even know the basics of the subject let alone the curriculum. This led to en extremely bad experience with some of the teachers. Every semester there are 7 papers(3 core and 4 optional) Core subjects are DSCs and optional.papers(mandatory to give) include GE/DSE, SEC, VAC, AEC. For honours courses, core papers are usually hard. One has to study in order to clear them. In my time, I didn't see anyone failing(that's a rare case scenario), but exam level remains moderate to difficult.

Just opposite to Gargi is Diggin. However it's not very student friendly, so can't really visit there frequently. There's no hangout place very nearby. You'll have to travel by metro or by road in order to visit hangout places. Lajpat nagar, sarojini nagar, Shahpur Jat, Hauz Khas are the most nearby hangout places. There's no hostel or gym in the campus. College closes at 6 pm everday. There's no night life as such. Depends on the pg/flat one is living in. Accomodations nearby are really expensive. The area near the college, according to me, is surely not a place to hangout.
