Royal Holloway, University of London Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Royal Holloway assesses Indian qualifications through officially published equivalencies for Class 12 boards and Indian bachelor’s degrees. High-level thresholds are summarised below; the full document checklist sits in the admissions silo.
Postgraduate:
- Indian bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended) for standard entry, and 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended) for competitive MSc programmes such as Data Science, AI and Finance
- English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each component, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall (writing 20, others 17), or PTE Academic 61 overall with 51 in each component
- Two academic references and a statement of purpose demonstrating research fit
- Subject-specific coursework prerequisites for numerate MSc routes and portfolios for creative programmes
Undergraduate:
- Class 12 (CBSE, ISC or State Board) with 75% to 85% (recommended) depending on programme; sciences require higher
- English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 5.5 in components (same scale as PG)
Key insight: Applicants who completed English-medium schooling with English at Class 12 above 70% can request an IELTS waiver, subject to admissions team review; the waiver is not guaranteed and depends on the course.
Royal Holloway, University of London Acceptance Rate 2027
Royal Holloway does not publish an official institution-wide acceptance rate, but third-party analysis of UCAS and postgraduate offer data puts the figure at 76% (estimated) across all levels, with competitive MSc programmes in Data Science, Finance and AI sitting closer to 55% to 65% (estimated). Reliability of the aggregate figure is moderate as UCAS reports offer rates rather than final enrolments.
Applicants meeting the recommended academic and English thresholds have a strong chance of receiving an offer, especially for arts, humanities, social sciences and psychology conversion routes.
Reality check: A 76% headline is friendly for standard entrants, but a numerate MSc application with a Class 12 gap in Maths, or a bachelor’s below 60%, will struggle regardless of the aggregate number.

Royal Holloway, University of London vs Peer Universities
Royal Holloway sits in the mid-tier of London-adjacent research universities, benchmarked below against three UK peers and two cross-country institutions serving similar Indian applicant profiles.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Holloway, University of London | #=485 | #379 | GBP 25,400 (INR 28.4 lakh) | University of London federation, parkland campus, top-40 Music |
| University of Surrey | #276 | #255 | GBP 25,700 (INR 28.8 lakh) | Placement year integration, stronger engineering profile |
| University of Reading | #=169 | #189 | GBP 25,900 (INR 29.0 lakh) | Henley Business School, agriculture and meteorology strength |
| City, University of London | #=336 | #265 | GBP 27,500 (INR 30.8 lakh) | Central London location, Bayes Business School |
| University of Sussex | #=248 | #210 | GBP 25,000 (INR 28.0 lakh) | Brighton coastal campus, development studies leadership |
Royal Holloway wins on parkland campus feel, University of London degree branding and Music, but Surrey and Reading outrank it on QS World and offer stronger engineering and business programmes respectively.
An Indian student choosing Royal Holloway over central London options is trading location intensity for a quieter residential campus at a similar fee level.
Royal Holloway suits Indian students with a bachelor’s above 55% who want a University of London degree at a moderate fee, a residential campus feel within reach of London hiring, and access to the two-year Graduate Route work visa. Total investment of INR 55 to 70 lakh for a one-year masters plus living costs is offset by median starting salaries of INR 31 to 39 lakh in the UK.
It is not the right fit for applicants who need a top-200 QS brand for public-sector recognition in India, or who want central London immersion for finance and consulting networking; the University of Warwick or King’s College London are stronger fits for those priorities.
Royal Holloway, University of London FAQs
Ques. How long can Indian graduates work in the UK after Royal Holloway?
Ans. Indian graduates of Royal Holloway qualify for the UK Graduate Route visa, which allows two years of unsponsored work in any role after a bachelor’s or masters degree, and three years after a PhD. The visa is applied for from within the UK, costs GBP 822 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, and requires that the university report course completion to UKVI.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time during study at Royal Holloway?
Ans. Yes, Student visa holders enrolled in a full-time degree at Royal Holloway can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. On-campus roles through the JobShop and Students’ Union pay from GBP 12.21 per hour (UK National Living Wage from April 2026). Doctoral researchers and self-employment are subject to additional restrictions.
Ques. Does Royal Holloway waive IELTS for Indian applicants?
Ans. Royal Holloway may waive the IELTS requirement for Indian applicants whose Class 12 was English-medium with English scored above 70%, or whose bachelor’s was fully taught in English. The waiver is decided case-by-case by the admissions team on application review and is more commonly granted for arts, humanities and social sciences than for competitive numerate MSc programmes.
Ques. What is the application fee at Royal Holloway for Indian students?
Ans. Postgraduate applications at Royal Holloway carry no application fee for most taught masters programmes, though selected specialist courses charge GBP 50. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, which charges GBP 28.50 for one choice or GBP 28.50 for up to five choices in the 2027 cycle. UCAS fee waivers are not typically available to Indian applicants.
Ques. Which Indian banks recognise Royal Holloway for education loans?
Ans. Royal Holloway appears on the approved-university lists of SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and non-banking lenders including Avanse and Auxilo. Loans up to INR 1.5 crore are available without collateral for confirmed offers, and admission-linked processing typically takes three to four weeks once the CAS is issued.
Ques. Are dependents allowed on the Royal Holloway Student visa?
Ans. Since January 2024, only PhD or other doctoral research students at Royal Holloway can bring dependents on the Student visa. Taught masters and undergraduate students, which cover the majority of Indian applicants, cannot bring spouses or children as dependents during their study period. Dependents can join later if the graduate switches to a Skilled Worker or Global Talent visa.
Ques. Does Royal Holloway offer conditional offers to Indian students?
Ans. Royal Holloway routinely issues conditional offers to Indian applicants where the bachelor’s degree is in progress, final marks are pending, or IELTS has not yet been taken. Conditions must be met by a stated cut-off date, usually mid-August for a September intake, before the CAS is released. An unconditional offer follows once final transcripts and English scores meet the requirement.
Ques. How does the University of London federation benefit Royal Holloway students?
Ans. Royal Holloway degrees are awarded by the University of London, giving students access to the federation’s central library (Senate House Library in Bloomsbury), interlibrary services, University of London Union facilities, and a globally recognised parent brand. Employers in India and Asia often recognise the University of London name, which supports post-study hiring even where Royal Holloway itself is less familiar.
