University of Sheffield Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Sheffield sets clear academic and English thresholds for Indian applicants, with programme-specific add-ons for competitive Business School and Engineering PG courses.
- PG academic: Bachelor’s with 55% to 65% or CGPA 5.5 to 6.5 out of 10 depending on programme tier and Indian university rank (recommended).
- English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component; PTE Academic 61 with 55 in each; TOEFL iBT 88 with 20 Reading, 19 Listening, 21 Speaking, 19 Writing; Duolingo English Test 120 accepted for most PG programmes. Verify at sheffield.ac.uk/international/english-language.
- Documents: Statement of purpose, two academic references, degree transcripts, and CV. WES is not required; direct transcripts from Indian universities are accepted.
- Programme-specific: MBA needs 3 years work experience; MSc Finance may request GRE or GMAT; Medicine requires UCAT and interview.
UG academic: Class 12 with 75% to 90% depending on programme (CBSE, ICSE, or state board), plus subject prerequisites in Maths, Physics, or Chemistry where relevant. Sheffield accepts a strong Class 12 for direct entry into most UG courses without a foundation year.
Key insight: Sheffield waives IELTS for Indian applicants whose Class 12 or Bachelor’s was completed in English medium at a listed Indian board, provided the university confirms medium of instruction in writing. This waiver saves ₹15,000 in test fees and speeds up conditional offers by two to three weeks.
University of Sheffield Acceptance Rate 2027
The University of Sheffield does not publish a single institutional acceptance rate. Cross-checked across Russell Group admissions data and applicant reports, the overall rate is 29% (estimated) for taught programmes, with wider variation by faculty.
| Programme Tier | Acceptance Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Overall taught | 29% (estimated) | Aggregate across UG and PGT. |
| Engineering PG | 35% to 40% (estimated) | Higher intake tolerance for MSc courses. |
| Management School PG | 20% to 25% (estimated) | Tighter cap on cohort size. |
| Medicine and Dentistry | Under 10% (estimated) | UCAT and interview required. |
Sheffield is selective but not the tightest in the Russell Group, and Indian applicants with a 60% Bachelor’s and IELTS 6.5 hold strong odds for most PG courses. Fit with programme prerequisites matters more than raw academic percentage.
Reality check: An Indian applicant with a 65% Bachelor’s from a well-ranked NIRF institution and 7.0 IELTS typically receives a conditional offer within 4 weeks. Applications with sub-55% Bachelor’s are usually redirected to Sheffield International College foundation pathways.

University of Sheffield vs Peer Universities
Sheffield competes with other northern Russell Group universities on cost, ranking, and Indian-student outcomes. The peer set below covers four direct competitors that Indian applicants typically consider alongside Sheffield.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (£) | Avg Annual PG Fee (₹ Lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Sheffield | #92 | £32,300 | ₹35.5 Lakh | Fixed-fee guarantee and auto £3,000 PG discount |
| University of Manchester | #38 | £33,500 | ₹36.9 Lakh | Higher QS rank, larger Indian alumni network |

| University of Nottingham | #97 | £29,500 | ₹32.5 Lakh | Slightly lower fees, engineering focus |
| University of Birmingham | #80 | £31,000 | ₹34.1 Lakh | Larger campus, similar Russell Group standing |
[Source: QS World Rankings 2027, official university fee pages]
Sheffield offers the best fee-to-outcome ratio in the north-of-England Russell Group set for Indian PG students. Its fixed-fee guarantee is unique among peers and delivers savings of £1,500 to £2,500 over a taught programme where other universities apply annual fee hikes.
The University of Sheffield fits Indian students who want a Russell Group degree at a controlled total cost, strong Engineering and Management provision, and a walkable non-London city with a settled Indian community. Total investment of ₹47.9 Lakh to ₹53.7 Lakh against a median PG starting salary of ₹30.3 Lakh gives a payback horizon of two to three years for graduates staying on the UK student visa and moving into Graduate Route roles.
It is a weaker fit for applicants prioritising a QS top-50 name, London-based finance networks, or a January intake. Those seekers should compare University of Manchester or King’s College London before finalising.
University of Sheffield FAQs
Ques. Does University of Sheffield offer part-time work options for Indian students?
Ans. Yes. Indian students on a Tier 4 or Student Route visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term and full-time during vacations. Sheffield’s Careers Service runs a dedicated Jobshop that lists on-campus and city-centre part-time roles. Typical hourly earnings are £11 to £13 (₹1,210 to ₹1,430), covering roughly 30% of monthly living costs. A National Insurance number is required before starting paid work.
Ques. What is the application fee for Sheffield University postgraduate courses?
Ans. Sheffield University does not charge an application fee for most PGT courses, unlike many UK Russell Group peers. The MBA is an exception and carries a £60 (₹6,600) application fee. Applicants pay a £2,000 (₹2.20 Lakh) tuition deposit only after accepting an unconditional offer, refundable in specific circumstances such as visa refusal with proof.
Ques. Can Indian students get an IELTS waiver at Sheffield University?
Ans. Yes, an IELTS waiver is available if the applicant’s Class 12 or Bachelor’s was completed in English-medium at a recognised Indian institution. Sheffield requires an official letter from the awarding institution confirming medium of instruction. The waiver applies to most PGT courses but is not granted for MBA, PhD, or Medicine programmes, which require an IELTS 7.0 minimum regardless.
Ques. Which Indian banks approve education loans for Sheffield University?
Ans. Sheffield is on the recognised institution list of every major Indian education loan lender. SBI, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred, Auxilo, and Prodigy Finance all offer loans up to ₹1.5 Crore against Sheffield offer letters. Unsecured loans of up to ₹75 Lakh are common for PGT applicants; secured loans against property collateral can cover the full cost of study.
Ques. What transcripts and documents does Sheffield University need from Indian applicants?
Ans. Applicants upload scanned degree transcripts, Class 12 marksheet, statement of purpose, two academic references, CV, and passport bio page. WES evaluation is not required; Sheffield accepts direct transcripts from Indian universities. On offer acceptance, students courier attested hard copies of transcripts to the Sheffield admissions office. English test scores are shared directly by the test provider.
Ques. How does Sheffield University handle dependent visas for Indian PhD students?
Ans. Sheffield PhD students on a Student Route visa longer than six months can bring a spouse and children under 18 as dependents. Sheffield issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that lists dependents. Financial proof of £845 (₹0.93 Lakh) per dependent per month for up to 9 months is required. Sheffield’s international office assists with CAS documentation but visa filing sits with the applicant.
Ques. Does Sheffield University interview Indian applicants for postgraduate courses?
Ans. Most Sheffield PGT courses are non-interview and decide on written application alone. Exceptions include the MBA, MSc Clinical Research, Medicine, and Architecture programmes, where a video interview via Kira Talent or MS Teams is standard. Interview timelines run two to four weeks after application submission, and decisions follow within 10 working days of interview.
Ques. What is the refund policy if I withdraw from University of Sheffield after enrolment?
Ans. Sheffield refunds tuition on a sliding scale by term. Withdrawing before term one starts recovers 100% of paid tuition minus the £2,000 (₹2.20 Lakh) non-refundable deposit. Withdrawal in weeks one to four of term one recovers 75%, weeks five to eight recovers 50%, and after week nine no refund is paid. Visa refusal before enrolment recovers 100% of tuition plus deposit with proof.

- Management for computer science is really good, when i face any problem, they solve that same day also if i have other problems like in visa or other related things then they have student union where they support the student and give us resolution.
- The university also provide us support in Healthcare, they have dedicated UHS (university health service) they have tied up with NHS and we get appointment on the same day and also it's really good for students.
- They have all the equipments me for students if they want camera, mic, laptops, computers to use, they gave us for free in rent for few days.
Dislikes
- The building is far away, like if I have one class from 12 PM to 2 PM in The Diamond building then they give another class from 2 PM to 4 PM at another building like The Regent Court building which is 10 minutes walk from that building.
Campus Life
- My campus experience at Sheffield was lively with events, fests, clubs, and many extracurricular activities. The University has several campuses, such as Western Bank, Engineering, St George’s, and the Health Sciences area.
- We had great facilities, including the IC, the Diamond, sports centres, and UHS. Popular events like Varsity, HackSheffield, and cultural nights made student life exciting, along with sports teams, societies, and volunteering activities.
Fees
- Tuition fees were 31,500 pounds, and I got a scholarship of 5,000 pounds. And we have to pay this amount in two installments. First in November and second in February, and we can extend these fee payments till May or June.
- For student accommodation, I paid approx 5,500 pounds for a year, and it was a really good experience in accommodation because we get every facilities needed for students, and the rooms were also pretty good.
- For transportation, I always prefer the bus as it is cheaper; for one ride, it costs me 1.5 pounds to get anywhere I go. And monthly groceries cost approx 50 to 60 pounds, depend upon you make food at home or eat outside. Because outside it's expensive.

- The quality of teaching of some of the professors was top notch. I was quite lucky with a few of them.
- Our campus and the facilities provided to us were actually very nice. We had 2 libraries- The diamond and the information commons which were open 24x7 to support us.
- I think I made friends with students of many different countries. The people in our college were really diverse and came from different different countries which I never thought I would make friends from.
Dislikes
- The complaint I had with my course was it somehow lacked industry exposure and practical knowledge which would have made me understand things better. A lot of it focused on theory.
- Rising cost of living expenses in the UK. It still was used to be better when I was there but recently prices of accomodations and grocery stores have shot up massively.
- The weather could be a bummer for alot of people. Here in Sheffield, it rains almost everyday maybe and the weather is always gloomy. I was okay with it at one point but it used to bother a lot to my friends.
Campus Life
- The whole city center in Sheffield was our campus. I wasn’t in one separate area. We had our department buildings all over the city, and that was the best part.
- Our campus had all the facilities. Libraries, sports venues, clubs, bars, food joints, everything.
- Sheffield Varsity was the main festival that happened in our college, which was sports competitions against the other college in the city, Sheffield Hallam University.
- There were tons of societies, and all of them had many events lined up all year. In general, our college had a lot of extracurricular events, be it sports events, club nights, or food festivals as well.
Fees
- I did a master's course, so the fees for me were around £25000. We had an option to pay in full once or in 2 installments.
- I used to live in a private student accommodation which cost me around £8000 for 51 51-week tenancy.
- The fee structure was either yearly or semester-wise.
- I was very bad at cooking and did not want to waste a lot of my time. So I personally used to spend somewhere around £700 a month, which included my food, grocer, ies and in general, transportation and daily life expenditures.
- There were people who used to spend half of it as well and were comfortable. I just didn’t think much when I was spending my money.

- Most professors are very highly qualified & knowledgeable.
- There is a lot of support available for students from professors, Teaching Assistants, Personal tutors & student services/students' union. Sheffield SU has been voted the best SU in the UK for many years now.
Dislikes
- There is not a lot of support for International students from career service. Most of their support is limited to tailoring your resume & cover letter which is helpful for graduates. However, for students with prior work experience or International students there should be focused support especially with the challenges of getting skilled worker visa.
- A lot of modules are taught in a year. Hence, teaching can feel a bit rushed. The onus is on you to study regularly & attend your lectures to be in a good position.
- For my course of Information Systems, there should have been more electives from Computer Science department. As a Software Engineer I would have loved that.

- SU is a democratic organisation. The leadership & organising committees are selected via elections by the students.
Fees
- Total tuition fees were £24,400 at that time. I paid in 2 instalments. One can pay in full if they want.
